Bei der Vorliebe der Araber fttr Grammatik und Syntax ist
es begreiflich, dass diese Fächer besonders stark vertreten sind.
Es findet sich das ^Laj'ÜI oUS' von _>jt vor, dann
das berühmte y^jUi' von iu_y^, anch der J,jIää und der Com¬
mentar des J^,^, ^\ fehlen nicht.
Unter den Werken philosophischen, mathematischen und natur¬
wissenschaftlichen Inhalts mag sich manches neue und werthvolle
noch entdecken lassen: die bekannte Schrift: «LaLaJI iüs-^t ist
da-, auch das byü? ^ v-jUj' u. a.
Die Ahtheilungen des Kataloges, welche die Rechtswissenschaft
und die Theologie zum Gegenstande haben, übergehe ich, denn sie
haben ein weit geringeres Interesse für uns.

The privilege of studying the same science as yourself induces me to take the liberty of writing to yon on a coin of I^utb-ed-din
Mohammad of Sinjär, which many years ago you described and
illustrated in the Zeitschrift der D. M. G. (Bd. VII. S. 228.
VTII. S. 840. cf. IX. 264). In your second notice of this coin
(Bd. VIII. S. 840) you propose to interpret the words iUm
as meaning the desastrous year 600 of the Flight, when an
earthquake shook Mesopotamia and Syria etc.
Whilst admiring the ingenuity of this theory , I could not help
doubting its correctness: it seemed to me that your reading was
an unusual expression to be engraved on a coin, though it might
be appropriate enough colloquially, or even in a history. It was
therefore with some pleasure that I recently discovered what I have
no hesitation in saying is the true reading ; and I have no doubt
that it will give you equal pleasure that the truth has been made
out, though your interesting interpretation falls to the ground in
consequence of the discovery.
The marginal inscription of the obverse (part of which was
not legible on your specimens) runs thus on coins in the British
Museum and in the Cabinet of Colonel Seton Guthrie:

and in the inner circle ^.j »'^. The mysterious words, then, have

no reference to the year, but are the name and title of S hah an-
shäh Nüh the eldest son (and heir designate ofKutb-
ed-din. See Ibn-el-AthTr (ed. Tornberg) X. m-.

On some specimens the whole title sLiJLS>Lii (or LiöL^Li;) is put
in the inner circle (or rather part of circle). I find the name of
Shähän-shäh Nüh as weliyyu 'ahd also on coins of the
eagle-type of 603, and indeed it was seeing it on these that sug¬
gested to me the idea of applying the reading to the coins of the
helmet-type.
