Introduction

»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2011«(statistics for the Land of Brandenburg, 2011, key facts and figures) offers information on the development in the Land of Brandenburg based on the most important statistical results.

This document is divided into chapters on different topics. Chap- ters 1 – 27 present figures on Bran- denburg’s demographic, economi- cal, social, cultural and political structures. As far as possible, devel- opments have been highlighted by including the figures for the years 2002, 2006 and 2010.

The document also contains infor- mation on the administrative dis- tricts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s development since 1990 (Chapter 29) and accumulated figures for the region of Berlin / Brandenburg (Chapter 30).

To 31 December 2010 covered the surface of Land Brandenburg 29,483 km². The portion of the agriculture, forest and water surface was with nearly 90 percent.

With 18,954 live births 417 children came to the world more than in 2009. This is the highest number of live births since 1991. In 2010 27,894 Brandenburg have passed away, 585 more than in 2009. Thus, there was a birth deficit of 8,940 people. Due to the surplus dying and the migration surplus of 624 people, the federal state of Brandenburg in the course of 2010 has lost 8,252 people or nearly 0.3 percent of its population. At the end of the year 2010 the population was 2,503,273 persons, and had the lowest level, which has determined the official population statistics for the federal state of Brandenburg since the reunification of Germany.

The observed decrease in popula- tion since 2001 continued.

At the end of 2010 there were 1.28 million dwellings in Branden- burg, 3,534 more than in 2009.

Most dwellings were added in the state capital of Potsdam (907) and in the district of Potsdam-Mittel- mark (771). 92.9 percent of dwell- ings in Brandenburg are located in buildings with three or more dwellings.

With 10.7 million overnight spent in accommodation establishments of the federal state of Brandenburg in 2010 was the previous year’s result again, even if only slightly exceed- ed. With 3.88 million arrivals for guest numbers was also a slight in- crease noted. The average length of stay was 2.8 days.

Adjusted for price changes, the gross domestic product in 2010 in Brandenburg increased by 2.2 per- cent. The medium-term analysis of price-adjusted economic develop- ment shows that the federal state of Brandenburg since 1991, steadily, if sometimes only slightly devel- oped upstream.

In 2009 there were three large elections in the federal state of Brandenburg. Beside the members to the European parliament and the German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag) also the members were selected to the Parliament of Brandenburg. The SPD with 33.0 percent of the secondary votes in Brandenburg strongest party fol- lowed of the party DIE LINKE with 27.2 percent and the CDU likewise with 19.8 percent. FDP and GRÜNE/

B90 drew again into the parliament.

»DIE kleine BRANDEN- BURG-STATISTIK 2011« gives an initial overview of the data provided by offi-cial statistics. A brochure along the same lines has been pub- lished for the Land of Berlin (»DIE kleine BERLIN- STATISTIK 2011«). Those interested also can find a similarly structured selection of figures and data for the Federal Republic of Germany as well as benchmark figures for all German federal states in »Pocketbook: Germany«, published by the Federal Sta- tistical Office.

These households are selected by means of a random mathemati- cal procedure. Inter- viewers provide infor- mation about the survey which is per- formed on location.

Every community of per- sons living together and forming an economical unit as well as persons who live alone and, nevertheless, manage for themselves are counted as a household (private household).

A household may include relatives and persons who do not belong to the family as such (e.g. partners in life). Married couples with children as well as single parents and unmarried cou- ples with their unmarried children living in the same household are counted as families.

1 New family concept starting from 2005: only ways of life with children, children without age delimitation / results 2002 adapted to new definition 04

Employment and Compensation of Employees

The number of em-

ployed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of na- tional account based on the Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige WZ2003 (Classification of Industries). The fig- ures on the number of employed persons cor- respond to the work- place concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are taken into consideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings re- flects all of the cash and non-cash benefits ac- crued to employees working in Brandenburg from work or other em- ployment relationships.

Consumer Prices

The index of consumer prices shows the monthly development of consumer prices. Thus it is considered to be a general measure of the change in the purchas- ing power. The basis for cal- culating the index is a com- modity basket with approximately 700 goods and services (price repre- sentatives). In accordance with their share in the over- all expenditures of private households in the respec- tive price base year (here:

2005), they are incorporat- ed into the index calcula- tion with different values (weights).
