Introduction

“DIEkleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2008” (statistics for the Land of Brandenburg, 2008, key facts and figures) offers infor- mation on the development in the Land of Brandenburg based on the most important statistical results.

This document is divided into chapters on different topics. Chap- ters 1 – 27 present figures on Brandenburg‘s demographic, eco- nomical, social, cultural and politi- cal structures. As far as possible, developments have been highligh- ted by including the figures for the years 1999, 2003 and 2007. The document also contains informati- on on the administrative districts (Chapter 28), data on Branden- burg‘s development since 1990 (Chapter 29) and accumulated fi- gures for the region of Ber- lin / Brandenburg (Chapter 30).

At the end of 2007, Brandenburg had a population of 2.536 million, the lowest figure since German unification. The number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 8,077: 18,589 children were born in 2007 while 26,666 inhabitants died. The death surplus was lower than in 2006 (8,465). Brandenburg also suffered a migration loss of 3,397 residents. In 2007, the popu- lation of Brandenburg decreased by 0.5 per cent (12,000 residents less than in 2006).

Tourism in Brandenburg achieved the second record high since 2006:

for 2007, accommodation provi- ders reported 3.6 million guests (4.6 per cent more than in 2006) and 9.9 million overnight stays (4.0 per cent more than in 2006).

The average duration of a stay decreased slightly from 2.7 to 2.6 days.

This series of pictures was taken in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

It shows photographs on the production and consumption of energy.

The contents of the photographs are independent of the statistical topic.

The gross domestic product (adjus- ted for price changes) increased by 2 per cent in 2007. Industry expe- rienced particularly strong growth.

The gross value added for manuf- acturing (adjusted for price changes), which caused significant growth impact, increased by 8.8 per cent from 2006 to 2007.

“DIEkleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2008” gives an initi- al overview of the data provided by official statistics. A brochure along the same lines has been published for the Land of Berlin (“DIEkleine BERLIN-STATIS- TIK 2008”). Those interested also can find a similarly struc- tured selection of figures and data for the Federal Republic of Germany as well as benchmark figures for all German “Länder”

in “Key Data on Germany”, pub- lished annually by the Federal Statistical Office.

Information on the economic and social situation of the popu- lation is provided by the micro-census. This involves an official, annually performed household survey which covers one per- cent of all house- holds. These house- holds are selected by means of a random mathematical proce- dure. Interviewers provide information about the survey which is performed on location.

1new family concept since 2005: only living arrangements with children, children without age limit Every community of persons living together and forming an economical

unit as well as persons who live alone and, nevertheless, manage for themselves are counted as a household (private household). A household may include relatives and persons who do not belong to the family as such (e.g. companions or partners in life). Consumer Prices

The consumer price index shows the monthly development of consumer prices.

Thus it is considered to be a general measure of the change in the purchasing power of money. The basis for calculating the index is a commodity basket with approximately 750 goods and services (price representatives). In accordance with their share in the overall expenditures of private households in the respective price base year (here: 2000), they are incorporated into the index calculation with different values (weights).

The number of employed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of national account. The figures on the number of employed persons correspond to the workplace concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are taken into consideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings reflects all of the cash and non-cash benefits accrued to employees working in Berlin from work or other employment relationships.
