Introduction
»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2013« (statistics for the federal state of Brandenburg 2013, key facts and figures) offers information on the development in the federal state Brandenburg based on the most important statistical results.
This brochure is divided into chapters on different topics. Chapters 1 – 27 present figures on Brandenburg’s demographic, economical, social, agricultural and political structures.
The results are compared to previous years.
The brochure also contains infor- mation on the administrative districts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s development since 1990 (Chapter 29) and accumulated figures for the region of Berlin/Bran denburg (Chapter 30).
On 31 December 2012 the area of the federal state Brandenburg covered 29,486 km². The proportion of the agricultural area was 49 percent. The forest area comprised 36 percent.
In 2012, approximately 18,500 children were born alive in the state of Brandenburg. The number of deaths was 28,400 persons. The resulting
mortality excess of 9,900 people could not be offset by the registered migration gain of around 6,200 peo- ple, so that a population loss of 3,700 people was reported. In the calcula- tion of population development only results which where registered after 9 May 2011 (census date) are consid- ered. The present motion cases may therefore differ from the results of the births, deaths and migration sta- tistics. At the end of 2012, the popula- tion was based on the 2011 census at 2,449,511 people and had the lowest level, the official population statistics has determined for the State of Brandenburg since the unification of Germany. The since 2001 observed population decline continued to hold on.
2012 were 1.26 million households in Brandenburg. Nearly 37 percent of them were single-person households.
With 11.5 million overnight stays in accommodation establishments in the federal state of Brandenburg in 2012, the numbers of previous year were again exceeded. With 4.2 million arrivals, the guest numbers also slightly increased. This represented an increase in overnight stays by 4.0 percent. For the guests, the in- crease was 3.1 percent. The average length of stay increased slightly to 2.8 days (2011: 2.7 days).
In 2012 7,283 dwellings were com- pleted in Brandenburg, 14.1 percent more than last year. 6,741 new dwellings were built. Due to con- struction work on existing buildings 542 dwellings were created. Most of the dwellings created in the dis- tricts Potsdam-Mittelmark and Oberhavel. A total of 7,690 construc- tion projects were completed in 2012 in Brandenburg. This was 14.9 percent more than last year.
In 2012 18,260 business registrations in Brandenburg were recorded, 11 percent less than last year.
Almost 18,900 businesses were de- registered during the year, which is –2.5 percent. Most of the move- ments were in the economic sector
»Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles«
with 4,200 registrations and 4,800 deregistrations, followed by the sector »Administrative and support service activities« with 2,500 regis- trations and 2,700 deregistrations and »Construction« with 2,300 reg- istrations and 2,600 deregistrations.
The state of Brandenburg recorded economic growth of 0.5 percent. The year before the economic output rose by 2.0 percent. The growth in 2012 is mainly due to the develop- ment in the service sector, which contributed in Brandenburg to 70 percent of gross value added.
In 2013, the elections to the Ger- man Parliament (Deutscher Bun- destag) took place. The CDU with 34.8 percent of the secondary votes is the strongest party, fol- lowed by the SPD with 23.1 per- cent and the party DIE LINKE with 22.4 percent.
»DIE kleine BRANDEN- BURG-STATISTIK 2013« gives an initial overview of the data provided by official statistics.
A similar brochure has been published for the state of Berlin (»DIE kleine BERLIN-STATIS- TIK 2013«). Those interested can also find a similarly structured selection of figures and data for the Federal Republic of Germany as well as benchmark figures for all German federal states in
»Pocketbook: Germany«, pub- lished by the Federal Statistical Office and under www.statistik- portal.de.

National accounts (VGR) are a statistical system for presenting a comprehen- sive, overall view of the economic activities of all business entities in Brandenburg. They are based on the European System of national ac- counts (ESA 1995) and the Classification of Industries (WZ 2008). At the centre of national accounts is the origin of the gross domestic product (GDP) as a measure of performance in Brandenburg.

16.1 Employment and Compensation of Employees The number of em-
ployed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of national account based on the Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige WZ2003 (Classification of Industries). The figures on the number of employed persons correspond to the work- place concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are taken into consideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings reflects all of the cash and non-cash benefits accrued to employees working in Brandenburg from work or other employment relation- ships.
