Introduction

»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2015« (statistics for the federal state of Brandenburg 2015, key facts and figures) offers information on the development in the federal state Brandenburg based on the most impor- tant statistical results.

Benchmarks to demographic, economic, social, cultural and political structures of Brandenburg are presented in Chapter 1 to 27. The results are compared to previous years. The brochure also contains infor- mation on the administrative districts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s de- velopment since 1990 (Chapter 29) and figures for the region of Berlin/Branden- burg (Chapter 30).

On December 31, 2014 the area of the federal state Brandenburg covered 29,654 km². The proportion of the agri- cultural area was 49 percent. The forest area comprised 36 percent.

In 2014, more than 19 thousand children were born alive in the state of Branden- burg. The number of deaths was around 29 thousand persons. The resulting mor- tality excess of more than 9 thousand peo- ple could be over adjusted through the registered migration surplus of around 18 thousand people, so a population growth of nearly 9 thousand people was quoted. At the end of 2014, the popula- tion was based on the 2011 census with 2,458 thousand people. This means for the first time since 2000 an, although low, population growth.

2014 were 1.23 million households in Brandenburg. Nearly 37 percent of them were single-person households. 235 thou- sand families with children under the age of 18 lived in Brandenburg.

In the school year 2014/15 approximately 232 thousand pupils visited general edu- cation schools, including about 10 percent independent school agencies.

In the winter semester 2014/15 there were around 50 thousand students in Branden- burg, including more than 51 percent women. 73 percent of students were en- rolled at universities. 36 percent were stu- dents in the fields of law, economics and social sciences.

In 2014, there were approximately 10 thousand recipients of continual sub- sistence payment, 24 thousand recipients of basic security in old age and disability and more than 36 thousand benefits under the 5th to 9th Chapter of SGB XII.

With more than 11.9 million overnight stays in accommodation establishments in the federal state of Brandenburg in 2014, the numbers of previous year were again exceeded. With 4.4 million arrivals, the guest numbers also slightly increased.

The average length of stay of tourists in Brandenburg in 2014 was 2.7 days.

Nearly 9 thousand dwellings were built in Brandenburg in 2014, 19 percent more than last year. 8 thousand new dwellings were built. Most of the dwellings created in Potsdam and the district Havelland. A total of nearly 8 thousand construction projects were completed in 2014 in Bran- denburg. This was 9 percent more than last year.

In 2014 approx 18 thousand business noti- fications in Brandenburg were recorded.

Approximately the same number of busi- nesses were deregistered during the year.

Most of the movements were in the eco- nomic sector »Wholesale and retail trade;

Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles«, followed by the sector and »Construction«

and »Administrative and support service activities«.

Brandenburg’s economy grew by 0.8 per- cent in 2014. In the previous year, eco- nomic output had decreased by 0.2 per- cent.

In 2014, three national elections took place in Brandenburg. In addition to elect- ing Members of the European Parliament and local elections also the election to the Parliament of Brandenburg took place. The SPD with 31.9 percent of the secondary votes is the strongest party, followed by the CDU with 23.0 percent and the party DIE LINKE with 18.6 percent.

»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2015« gives an initial over- view of the data provided by official statis- tics. A similar brochure has been published for the federal state of Berlin (» DIE kleine BERLIN-STATISTIK 2015«).

Both booklets are also published in Ger- man. Comparative figures for the federal states interested can be found in the com- mon statistics portal of the statistical of- fices of Germany and the federal states www.statistikportal.de.

They are based on the European System of national ac- counts (ESA 2010) and the Classification of Industries (WZ 2008). 16.1 Employment and compensation of employees

The number of employed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of national account.

The figures on the number of employed persons cor- respond to the workplace concept; that is, all em- ployed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are taken into considera- tion. In the result for in- come creation the figure for employee earnings re- flects all of the cash and non-cash benefits accrued to employees working in Brandenburg from work or other employment relationships.
