Introduction
“DIEkleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2007” (The small Brandenburg Statistics 2007) offers information on the development in the Land Brandenburg based on the most important statistical re- sults.
Divided into thematic chapters, figures on the demographic, eco- nomical, social, cultural, and politi- cal structures of Brandenburg are presented (Chapters 1 – 27). As far as possible, developments are highlighted by showing the figures for the years 1998, 2002 and 2006.
The brochure also contains infor- mation on the administrative dis- tricts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s development since 1990 (Chapter 29), and an accumu- lation of figures for the region of Berlin / Brandenburg.
At the end of 2006 Brandenburg had a population of 2.548 million.
This has been a net loss of 11,700 residents (– 0.5 percent).
The trend of population decrease continues since 2001. However, the loss in 2006 was the highest re- corded in Brandenburg since 1992.
The decrease was mainly caused by a birthrate deficit: 17,883 children were born in 2006 but 26,348 inhabitants died. Brandenburg also suffered a migration loss of 3,300 residents.
The tourism in Brandenburg achieved a record high in the number of visitors. Last year 3.22 million people visited Brandenburg. The visitors booked 8.8 million overnight stays. It is remarkable that the average duration of the stay increases from year to year.
The gross domestic product (adjusted for prices) increased 1.9 percent in 2006. The hotel, res- taurant and production industry performed better in 2006. It seems that the decline in the construction industry has stopped: The gross value added (adjusted for prices) increased 3.1 percent from 2005 to 2006.
“DIEkleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2007”gives an initial overview of the data of- fered by the official statistics. For the »Land« Berlin an analogical brochure is published, named
“DIEkleine BERLIN-STATIS- TIK 2007” (The small Berlin Statistics 2007). Those interested also can find a similarly struc- tured selection of figures for the Federal Republic of Germany as well as benchmark figures for all German “Länder” in “Key Data on Germany”, published on a yearly basis by the Federal Statistical Office.

Single-person households Private households by monthly net income Information on the economic and social situation of the popu- lation is provided by the micro-census. This involves an official, annually performed household survey which covers one per- cent of all house- holds. These house- holds are selected by means of a random mathematical proce- dure. Interviewers provide information about the survey which is performed on location.

Consumer Prices
The consumer price index shows the monthly development of consumer prices.
Thus it is considered to be a general measure of the change in the purchasing power of money. The basis for calculating the index is a commodity basket with approximately 750 goods and services (price representatives). In accordance with their share in the overall expenditures of private households in the respective price base year (here: 2000), they are incorporated into the index calculation with different values (weights).

Building Activity, Dwellings
The building statistics in-clude all aspects of building, from planning to the finished building product. The rele- vant information is provided not only by the monthly and annual construction industry statistics, but also building activity statistics in particu- lar. The building and housing stock is updated with the building activity statistics in between the building and housing census. The basis for updating is provided by the census of 1995.

Foreign Trade
The foreign trade statistics provide figures with regard to the movement of goods across the frontiers (import and export) between Brandenburg and foreign countries. The basis for the results is provided by the customs documents of im- porters and exporters in the trading industry with coun- tries outside of the Europe- an Union (extra trade) as well as the statistical regis- trations of acquisitions and deliveries within the com- munity within the meaning of the Value-Added Tax Law (intra trade).1Provisional data

Employment and Compensation of Employees
The number of employed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of national account. The figures on the number of employed persons correspond to the workplace concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are tak- en into consideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings reflects all of the cash and non-cash benefits accrued to employees working in Berlin from work or other employment relationships.
