Introduction

»Die kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2016« (statistics for the federal state of Brandenburg 2016) offers information on the development of the federal state of Brandenburg based on the most important statistical results.

Key figures on demographic, economic, social, agricultural and political structures of Brandenburg are shown in Chapters 1 to 27. The results are compared to previous years. The brochure also contains infor- mation on the administrative districts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s de- velopment since 1990 (Chapter 29) and figures on the region of Berlin/Branden- burg (Chapter 30).

On December 31, 2015 the area of the federal state Brandenburg covered 29,654 km². The proportion of the agricul- tural area was 49 percent and 36 percent forest area.

In 2015 more than 19 thousand children were born alive in the state of Branden- burg, whilst the number of deaths was nearly 31 thousand persons. The excess of deaths over births of nearly 12 thousand people could be adjusted over through the registered migration surplus of more than 37 thousand people. The population there- fore increased by nearly 27 thousand per- sons, resulting in an overall population size of 2.5 million residents by the end of 2015.

In 2015 1.24 million private households has been counted, with a share of 38 per- cent single person households. About 235 thousand families with children under the age of 18 lived in Brandenburg.

In the school year 2015/16 approximately 236 thousand pupils attended general ed- ucation schools, including 10 percent at in- dependent school agencies.

In the winter semester 2015/16 there were around 50 thousand students in Branden- burg, of which were 52 percent female students. 73 percent of the students were enrolled at universities. 40 percent were students in the fields of legal, economic, and social sciences faculties.

Introduction

In 2015 more than 9 thousand physicians and nearly 2 thousand dentists practiced in Brandenburg. 56 hospitals with about 15 thousand beds in have an average stay of 7.9 days.

In 2015 there were approximately 11 thousand recipients of continual sub- sistence payment, more than 24 thousand recipients of basic security benefits in old age and in cases of reduced earning capac- ity and more than 36 thousand recipients of benefits from the 5th to 9th Chapter to the Sozialgesetzbuch XII (SGB XII).

The gross domestic product (GDP) in Brandenburg increased by 2.7 percent, compared to 1.6 percent in 2014.

In 2015 about 17 thousand business noti- fications in Brandenburg were recorded.

Approximately the same numbers of busi- nesses were deregistered during the year.

Most of the changes were in the economic sector »Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles«, fol- lowed by the sector »Construction« and

»Administrative and support service activi- ties«.

More than 9 thousand dwellings were built in Brandenburg in 2015, 4 percent more than last year. 8 thousand new dwellings were built. Most of the dwell- ings are created in Potsdam and the dis- tricts of Havelland and Potsdam-Mittel- mark.

In 2015 more than 12.5 million overnight stays in accommodation establishments are registered, more than in previous years. Also the total number of visitors in- creased slightly up to 4.6 million, whereas the average length of stay remained on a constant level of 2.7 days.

The last elections in the federal state of Brandenburg took place in 2014, both on the regional (Landtagswahl) and on the local level (Kommunalwahl). Additionally, the election of the members of the Euro- pean Parliament had been held.

The Land Parliament of Brandenburg (Landtag) was composed by the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), with 31.9 percent of secondary votes followed by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 23.0 percent. The third-strongest po- litical force was The Left (DIE LINKE) with 18.6 percent of all secondary votes.

»Die kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2016« gives an initial over- view of the data provided by official statis- tics. A similar brochure is available for the federal state of Berlin (»Die kleine BERLIN-STATISTIK 2016«). Both booklets are also published in German lan- guage. Comparative figures for the federal states can be found in the common statis- tics portal of the statistical offices of Ger- many and the federal states www.statistikportal.de.

14 National Accounts

National accounts (VGR) are a statistical system for presenting a compre- hensive, overall view of the economic activities of all business entities in Brandenburg. They are based on the European System of national ac- counts (ESA 2010) and the Classification of Industries (WZ 2008). At the centre of national accounts is the origin of the gross do- mestic product (GDP) as a measure of performance in Brandenburg.

16.1 Employment and compensation of employees

Persons in employment and their wages and sala- ries are determined within the scope of national ac- count. The figures on the number of employed per- sons correspond to the workplace concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Branden- burg are taken into con- sideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings re- flects all of the cash and non-cash benefits accrued to employees working in Brandenburg from work or other employment relationships.
