Introduction
»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2010« (statistics for the Land of Brandenburg, 2009, key facts and figures) offers information on the development in the Land of Brandenburg based on the most important statistical results.
This document is divided into chap- ters on different topics. Chapters 1 – 27 present figures on Branden- burg‘s demographic, economical, social, cultural and political struc- tures. As far as possible, develop- ments have been highlighted by including the figures for the years 2001, 2005 and 2009. The docu- ment also contains information on the administrative districts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s devel- opment since 1990 (Chapter 29) and accumulated figures for the re- gion of Berlin / Brandenburg (Chap- ter 30).
To 31 December 2009 covered the surface of Land Brandenburg 2.95 million hectares. The portion of the agriculture, forest and water surface was with nearly 90 per cent.
With 18,537 births 271 children came less to the world than 2008.
After it had given a birth rise in the year 2008 still another, the number of live births decreased back for the first time since 2006 again. In 2009 27,309 Brandenburgers have passed away, 502 more than 2008.
Thus a dying surplus of 8,772 per- sons resulted. By the dying surplus and the migration loss of 2,305 per- sons the country Brandenburg in the process of the yearly has lost 2009 10,968 persons or scarcely 0.4 per cent of its population. Because of the end of 2009 the total popula- tion was with 2,511,525 persons, and had thereby the lowest condi- tions which the official population statistics for the country Branden- burg determined since the reunifi- cation of Germany. Since 2001 the decrease in population which can be observed continued to stop.
At the end of 2009, there were 1.3 million flats in Brandenburg, 2,318 more than at the end of 2008. Most flats were added in the district Pots- dam-Mittelmark (799) and in the state capital Potsdam (776). 85.7 per cent of the residential buildings in Brandenburg are in one and two- family houses.
With 10.25 million overnight stays in the accommodating establish- ments of the country Brandenburg in the year 2009 the previous year result was exceeded again, even if only easily. With 3.71 million arri- vals however a lighter decrease was to be registered with the guest numbers. The average duration of stay of the guests increased to 2.8 days.
After being adjusted for price changes, the gross domestic prod- uct for Brandenburg went back in the year 2009 by 2.1 per cent. This was a comparatively moderate de- crease of the national economy de- velopment, which was coined by the world-wide financial and eco- nomic crisis in Brandenburg than in other Federal states less. The medi- um-term view of the price-settled economic development shows the fact that itself the country Branden- burg since the year 2004 constantly even if partly only slightly upward developed and now in the year 2009 a stronger setback to book had.
In the year 2009 there were three large elections in Brandenburg.
Beside the members to the Europe- an parliament and the Deutscher Bundestag (German Parliament) also the members were selected to the Parliament of Brandenburg.
The SPD with 33.0 per cent of the secondary votes in Brandenburg strongest party followed of the party DIE LINKE with 27.2 per cent and the CDU likewise with 19.8 per cent. FDP and GRÜNE/B90 drew again into the parliament.
»DIE kleine BRANDEN- BURG-STATISTIK 2010« gives an initial overview of the data provided by official statistics. A brochure along the same lines has been pub- lished for the Land of Berlin (»DIE kleine BERLIN-STA- TISTIK 2010«). Those inter- ested also can find a similarly structured selection of fig- ures and data for the Federal Republic of Germany as well as benchmark figures for all German »Länder« in the
»Pocketbook: Germany«, published by the Federal Statistical Office.

16.1 Employment and Compensation of Employees The number of em-
ployed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of na- tional account based on the Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige WZ2003 (Classification of Industries). The fig- ures on the number of employed persons cor- respond to the work- place concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are taken into consideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings re- flects all of the cash and non-cash benefits ac- crued to employees working in Brandenburg from work or other em- ployment relationships.

21 Consumer Prices The consumer price index shows the monthly devel- opment of consumer prices.
Thus it is considered to be a general measure of the change in the purchasing power of money. The basis for calculating the index is a commodity basket with ap- proximately 700 goods and services (price representa- tives). In accordance with their share in the overall expenditures of private households in the respec- tive price base year (here:
2005), they are incorporat- ed into the index calcula- tion with different values (weights).
