Introduction

»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2014« (statistics for the federal state of Brandenburg 2014, key facts and figures) offers information on the development in the federal state Brandenburg based on the most im- portant statistical results.

Benchmarks to demographic, econom- ic, social, cultural and political struc- tures of Brandenburg are presented in Chapter 1 to 27. The results are com- pared to previous years. The brochure also contains information on the ad- ministrative districts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s development since 1990 (Chapter 29) and figures for the region of Berlin/Brandenburg (Chapter 30).

On December 31, 2013 the area of the federal state Brandenburg covered 29,654 km². The proportion of the agricultural area was 49 percent. The forest area comprised 36 percent.

In 2013, approximately 18,400 children were born alive in the state of Brandenburg. The number of deaths was 29,700 persons. The resulting mor- tality excess of 11,300 people could not be offset by the registered migration gain of around 10,600 people, so that a population loss of 318 people was re- ported. In the calculation of population development only results which where registered after May 9, 2011 (census

date) are considered. The present mo- tion cases may therefore differ from the results of the births, deaths and migration statistics. At the end of 2013, the population was based on the 2011 census at 2,449,193 people and had the lowest level, the official population statistics has determined for the State of Brandenburg since the unification of Germany. The since 2001 observed pop- ulation decline continued to hold on.

2013 were 1.24 million households in Brandenburg. Nearly 37 percent of them were single-person households.

236,100 families with children under the age of 18 lived in Brandenburg.

In the school year 2013/14 approxi- mately 227,000 pupils visited general education schools, including 9.5 per- cent independent school agencies.

In the winter semester 2013/14 there were 50,272 students in Brandenburg, including 50.7 percent women. 72 per- cent of students were enrolled at uni- versities. 35.2 percent were students in the fields of law, economics and social sciences.

2013, practiced 9,017 physicians and 1,974 dentists in Brandenburg.

The 55 hospitals in Brandenburg possessed 15,191 Beds in. The average length of stay was 7.9 days.

(5)

In 2013, there were approximately 9,800 recipients of continual subsist- ence payment, 22,800 recipients of ba- sic security in old age and disability and 34,000 benefits under the 5th to 9th Chapter of SGB XII.

With more than 11.5 million overnight stays in accommodation establish- ments in the federal state of Branden- burg in 2013, the numbers of previous year were again exceeded. With 4.2 million arrivals, the guest numbers also slightly increased. The average length of stay of tourists in Branden- burg in 2013 was 2.8 days.

7,435 dwellings were built in Branden- burg in 2013, 2 percent more than last year. 6,510 new dwellings were built.

Most of the dwellings created in Potsdam and the districts Potsdam- Mittelmark and Havelland. A total of 7,233 construction projects were com- pleted in 2013 in Brandenburg. This was 6 percent less than last year.

In 2013 18,330 business registrations in Brandenburg were recorded. This is roughly the value of the previous year.

Approximately 18,000 businesses were deregistered during the year. Most of the movements were in the economic sector »Wholesale and retail trade; Re- pair of motor vehicles and motorcy- cles« with 4,140 registrations and 4,359 deregistrations, followed by the sector

»Administrative and support service

activities« with 2,587 registrations and 2,479 deregistrations and »Con- struction« with 2,397 registrations and 2,515 deregistrations.

Brandenburg’s economy grew by 0.7 percent in 2013. The year before the economic output had increased also by 0.7 percent

In 2014, three national elections took place in Brandenburg. In addition to electing Members of the European Parliament and local elections also the election to the Parliament of Bran- denburg took place. The SPD with 31.9 percent of the secondary votes is the strongest party, followed by the CDU with 23.0 percent and the party DIE LINKE with 18.6 percent.

»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2014« gives an initial overview of the data provided by of- ficial statistics. A similar brochure has been published for the federal state of Berlin (»DIE kleine BERLIN- STATISTIK 2014«). Both booklets are also published in German. Comparative figures for the federal states interested can find in the common statistics por- tal of the statistical offices of Germany and the federal states www.statistik- portal.de.

National accounts (VGR) are a statistical system for presenting a comprehen- sive, overall view of the economic activities of all business entities in Brandenburg. They are based on the European System of national ac- counts (ESA 1995) and the Classification of Industries (WZ 2008). At the centre of national accounts is the origin of the gross domestic product (GDP) as a measure of performance in Brandenburg.

16.1 Employment and Compensation of Employees The number of em-

ployed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of national account based on the Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige WZ2003 (Classification of Industries). The figures on the number of employed persons correspond to the work- place concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are taken into consideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings reflects all of the cash and non-cash benefits accrued to employees working in Brandenburg from work or other employment relation- ships.

The foreign trade statistics provide figures with regard to the movement of goods across the frontiers (export and import) between Brandenburg and foreign countries. The basis for the results is provided by the customs documents of importers and exporters in the trading industry with countries outside of the European Union (extra trade) as well as the statis- tical registrations of acquisi- tions and deliveries within the community within the meaning of the Value-Add- ed Tax Law (intra trade).
