Introduction
»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG- STATISTIK 2012« (statistics for the federal state of Brandenburg 2012, key facts and figures) offers infor- mation on the development in the federal state Brandenburg based on the most important statistical results.
This brochure is divided into chap- ters on different topics. Chapters 1 – 27 present figures on Branden- burg’s demographic, economical, social, agricultural and political structures. As far as possible, devel- opments have been highlighted by comparing with the figures for the years 2003, 2007 and 2011.
The brochure also contains in- formation on the administrative districts (Chapter 28), data on Brandenburg‘s development since 1990 (Chapter 29) and accumulated figures for the region of Berlin/
Brandenburg (Chapter 30).
On 31 December 2011 the area of the federal state Brandenburg cov- ered 29,484 km². The proportion of the agricultural area was 49 per- cent. The forest area comprised 35 percent.
With 18,279 live births 675 children were born less than in 2010. In 2011 27,851 Brandenburg inhabitants died, 43 less than in 2010. Thus, there was a deficit of births by 9,572 people. Due to the surplus dying and a migration surplus of 1,847 people, the federal state of Brandenburg has lost 7,638 inhabi- tants, or nearly 0.3 percent of its population in the course of 2011.
At the end of 2011 the population was 2,495,635 people, and had the lowest level, that has determined the official population statistics for the federal state of Brandenburg since the reunification of Germany.
The observed decrease in popula- tion since 2001 continued.
On 31 December 2011 in Branden- burg lived 69,346 foreigners. This represents a population share of 2.8 percent.
2011 there were in Brandenburg 1.26 million households. Nearly 38 percent of them were Single- person households.
At the end of 2011, there were 1.29 million dwellings in Branden- burg, 3,725 more than in 2010.
Most of them were added in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark (725) and in the state capital Potsdam (618). 50.9 percent of dwellings in Brandenburg are located in build- ings with three or more dwellings.
With 11.1 million overnight stays in accommodation establishments in the federal state of Brandenburg in 2011, the previous year was ex- ceeded again. With 4.05 million arrivals, the guest numbers also slightly increased. The average length of stay was 2.7 days.
Adjusted for price changes, the gross domestic product for Bran- den burg increased in 2011 by 2.4 percent. The medium-term analysis of price-adjusted economic development shows that the fed- eral state of Brandenburg steadily upward since 1991 developed, though sometimes only slightly.
In 2009 there were three large elections in the federal state of Brandenburg. Beside the members to the European parliament and the German Parliament (Deutscher Bun- destag) also were elected the mem- bers to the Parliament of Branden- burg. The SPD with 33.0 per cent of the secondary votes is again the strongest party, followed by the party DIE LINKE with 27.2 percent and the CDU with 19.8 percent. FDP and GRÜNE/B90 just moved into the parliament of Brandenburg.
»DIE kleine BRANDEN- BURG-STATISTIK 2012« gives an initial overview of the data provided by official statistics. A similar brochure has been published for the state of Berlin (»DIE kleine BERLIN-STATISTIK 2012«).
Those interested can also find a similarly structured selection of figures and data for the Federal Republic of Germany as well as bench- mark figures for all German federal states in »Pocket- book: Germany«, published by the Federal Statistical Office and under www.

National accounts (VGR) are a statistical system for presenting a comprehen- sive, overall view of the economic activities of all business entities in Brandenburg. They are based on the European System of national ac- counts (ESA 1995) and the Classification of Industries (WZ 2008). At the centre of national accounts is the origin of the gross do- mestic product (GDP) as a measure of performance in Brandenburg.

Employment and Compensation of Employees
The number of em-ployed persons along with their wages and salaries are determined within the scope of na- tional account based on the Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige WZ2003 (Classification of Industries). The fig- ures on the number of employed persons cor- respond to the work- place concept; that is, all employed persons who have their job in Brandenburg are taken into consideration. In the result for income creation the figure for employee earnings re- flects all of the cash and non-cash benefits ac- crued to employees working in Brandenburg from work or other em- ployment relationships.
