Introduction

The »kleine brandenburg-statistik 2017«

gives an initial overview of the data pro- vided by official statistics. A similar bro- chure is available for the federal state of Berlin »kleine berlin-statistik 2017«. Both booklets are also published in German lan- guage.

Comparative figures for the federal states can be found in the common statistics por- tal of the statistical offices of Germany and the federal states www.statistikportal.de.

The »kleine brandenburg-statistik 2017«

(statistics for the federal state of Branden- burg 2017) offers information on the devel- opment of the federal state of Branden- burg based on the most important statistical results.

Key figures on demographic, economic, social, agricultural and political structures of Brandenburg are shown in Chapters 1 to 26. The results are compared to previous years. The brochure also contains informa- tion on the administrative districts (Chap- ter 27), data on Brandenburg‘s develop- ment since 1990 (Chapter 28) and figures on the region of Berlin-Brandenburg (Chapter 29).

Households and Families

Every community of persons living together and forming an economical unit as well as per- sons who live alone and, never- theless, manage for themselves are counted as a household (private household). A house- hold may include relatives and persons who do not belong to the family as such (e.g. partners in life).

Married couples with children as well as single parents and unmarried couples with their unmarried children living in the same household are counted as families.

National Accounts

Unit 2008 2012 2016¹

National accounts (NA) are a statistical system for presenting a comprehensive, overall view of the economic activities of all business entities in Branden- burg. They are based on the European System of national accounts (ESA 2010) and the Classification of Economic Activities (WZ 2008). At the centre of national accounts is the origin of the gross domestic product (GDP) as a measure of performance in Brandenburg.

Employment and Compensation of Employees

Persons in employment and their wages and salaries are determined in accordance with system of national accounts. The number of employed persons corresponds to the workplace concept; that is, all employed persons that work in Branden- burg are taken into considera- tion. In national accounts the compensation of employees reflects all of the cash and non- cash remuneration accrued to employees working in Branden- burg due to their employment relationships.
