Kommentar: In contemporary research, tourists, travelers, vagabonds, and the like are frequently presented as travelling characters, who, while being on the road, resonate with and negotiate culturally specific – individual and collective – discourses of encountering and constructing the foreign and 'the other' (including unknown spaces/ ‘Terra Incognita”). However, in contrast to (visual) ethnology, literary and cultural studies approaches to factual and fictional forms of 'traveling texts' have so far neglected the body as a medium of travel, despite the fact that travelers are always also "traveling bodies” since the body is a central aspect of each travel experience.
Following a panel offered at the 3rd annual conference of the Kulturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft in Gent, Belgium ("Bodies in Motion"), this interdisciplinary conference focuses on traveling as an embodied cultural practice, arguing that in particular the experience of the sensual body ("Leib") can be seen as a medium for the communication and negotiation of social norms and values. Hence, individual papers will analyze body discourses as they become visible in textual, visual, and audiovisual as well as in performative negotiations, representations and performances of traveling. In addition, this conference aims at discussing practices of mobility and perception, images and metaphors of traveling bodies (e.g. gendering space in the context of orientalism and colonialism), the performance of 'the body' (own vs. other) as well as culturally specific body practices and how they challenge traditional notions about embodiment. Of special significance are representations of the obstinate or 'ill-functioning' body (e.g. the 'resistant' body, the power of the body over mind, bodily functions and control, discourses on health and hygiene), and limits and delimitations of body experience while traveling (e.g. norms and regulations, spatial experiences, thresholds, and borders; (technological) body enhancement while abroad/ on the road).

Kommentar: This course aims at introducing students to the basic ‘tools’ necessary for the study of English and American literature. We will start by looking at the definition of literature and discuss the aims and objects of literary studies. Then we will have a more in-depth look at the three major genres – drama, poetry, and prose – as well as the respective concepts and terminologies connected to them. Using example texts, we will discuss questions and issues such as the following: What makes a short story a short story? How does poetic form (rhyme scheme, meter etc.) relate to the interpretation of a poem? How are dramatic texts different from novels and why/how does this matter for an interpretation? How does the narrative point of view influence our reading of a text?
With a firm grasp of literary genres, their respective characteristics, and terminology, we will briefly turn to literary theory: we will discuss the role of the reader and his/ her relation to the text in the process of interpretation and compare different theories and methods of interpretation. Again using examples, we will see how different conceptions about how a text should be interpreted can lead to different reading results.
Throughout the course, we will look at literary history and the main epochs of English and American literature to see the importance of reading literature in its cultural contexts. We will use literary examples to practice the use of theories, terms, and concepts so students should expect to read primary literature (one drama, excerpts from a novel, short stories and poems) in addition to theoretical texts.

This lecture offers a general introduction to linguistics from an applied perspective, mainly following the theory of Cognitive Linguistics. It will furthermore - throughout all the topics discussed – answer the questions in which way linguistic knowledge is important for teachers of English as a foreign language and how this knowledge can be applied in the foreign language classroom.
Starting with a general overview, the topics under discussion will include the core areas of linguistics, i.e., phonetics/phonology (referring to the sounds of language), morphology (referring to word formation), syntax (referring to sentence structure), semantics (referring to meaning concepts), pragmatics (referring to ways in which people use language), first and second language acquisition in the framework of psycholinguistics (referring to how language(s) is/are learnt), sociolinguistics (referring to the relationship between language and society) as well as historical and comparative linguistics (referring to older stages of the English language and the relations between different languages).
Please register in KLIPS for this course. The module exam, a third of which will be devoted to questions from linguistics, will take place in the week after the end of the lectures and you will need to register for it as well.
It is strongly recommended that students wishing to participate in this seminar buy the textbook (see below) in time . Some copies have been preordered at Reuffel’s, but if they are sold out, the book is quite hard to get. In this case, you best try to get it directly from the publisher atwww.benjamins.nl. The book contains study aids and will accompany you during all your "linguistic"
