Welcome to Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux – ALP

Have you ever asked yourself what goes into making our foods healthy and safe, and guaranteeing farming families a fair income for ecologically sound agricultural practices?

At the Swiss Federal Research Station for Animal Production and Dairy Products ALP, it is our mission to provide answers to these questions.

“From pasture to plate”, we are active in a vital area of the Swiss agricultural sector. We help to ensure that milk, meat, eggs and honey are produced by healthy animals. With this in mind, we collaborate closely with cus- tomers and partners.

We cordially invite you to visit our research station. We are committed to your ongoing appreciation of Swiss agriculture’s unique products.

Enjoy your visit!

Danielle Gagnaux Director of ALP

Our work is performed at two locations: Posieux/FR (above) and Berne-Liebefeld/BE (below).

Quality fodder results in milk and meat from healthy animals

Milk and meat are natural and healthy as long as animals are properly raised and fed on quality fodder grown according to ecologically sound farming practices. And for the farmers themselves, this must offer economic advan- tages.

Our research results are at the disposal of all who are producing milk and meat.

We formulate principles of production for beef in peri- pheral regions and, by so doing, help to preserve and sustain such landscapes.

(5)

Swiss milk, meat and honey are first-class

Milk and meat processing is heavily depen- dent on technological development. By syste- matically monitoring the food industry and market environment, we can identify trends and respond in good time by, for instance, developing new processes for dairy food pro- duction.

This forward-looking approach to research allows us to remain innovative and competitive and make a significant contribution to the global reputation for excellence that Swiss food enjoys.

Bee research provides advice and assistance on how to keep a healthy colony of bees and ensure quality bee products.

Efficient, comprehensive bee- keeping is important for the pollination of cultivated and wild plants.

Swiss quality keeps its promise!

Consumers appreciate the excellent quality of Swiss raw products such as cheese made from raw milk. In order to export cheeses of this type, we evaluate the associated risks in accordance with international norms.

And by subjecting animal feed to rigorous controls, we achieve our objective of instilling in consumers unalloyed confidence in Switzer- land’s unique foods.

Milk tests and quality controls are regularly performed on every dairy farm. These controls comply with the EU standard observed by ALP’s national reference laboratory.

Healthy food for nutrition- conscious consumers

Milk, meat and honey are valuable ingredients for human nutrition. Research is continually finding new data on the beneficial effects of these products on human health. We perform thorough analyses as a basis for informed ad- vice on nutrition.

By so doing, we make an important contri- bution to the balanced diet of the Swiss population.

From a strain collection com- prising over 15,000 micro- organisms present in natural biodiversity, we offer exclusive bud-quality cultures for the production of healthy Swiss dairy products.

Agriculture focused on people and the environment

Agroscope incorporates the five Swiss agri- cultural research stations – Liebefeld-Posieux, FAL Reckenholz, FAT Tänikon, FAW Wädens- wiland RAC Changins.Agroscope is part of the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture.

The overall goal of this research is to ensure an economically efficient, environmentally responsible agrarian sector that is developing in a socially sustainable manner. The research centers also carry out performance and con- trol tasks relating to seeds, fertilizers and other agricultural materials, as well as to varieties protection.
