Students are reading a scientific paper proposed by one of the teachers and present the results in a talk. The topics are inspired by the research interests of the theoretical physics staff. The seminar is part of the Modul PHY_711 Higher Theoretical Physics.
Note. The seminar calendar and the topics are decided upon on the first session Wed 14 April at 12 h15.
Note. All documents and references are made available on the Moodle platform. There you also find the coordinate parameters for the online sessions, as well as the ”Rules of the Game” for preparing and delivering your presentations.

Lerninhalte
In this course you will be thought how to analyse complex datasets, as they often can be found in experimental physics. You will learn to use a series of standard libraries for data analysis and visualisation in Python and how to employ them in every day data-analysis tasks. In interactive examples and programming exercises many common mistakes and pitfalls will be discussed in an hands-on manner. The course is completed by an student-run data analysis project.

The lecture starts online, coordinate parameters available on Moodle.
Bose predicted in the 1920s that an ideal gas of particles with integer spin should occupy the state of lowest energy with a macroscopic particle number, forming the so-called Bose-Einstein condensate. In the 1950s, this concept helped to understand the superfluidity of liquid He and superconductivity (condensation of Cooper pairs). In the 1990s, experiments with ultracold atomic gases provided the first realisations of weakly interacting Bose gases that can be excellently compared with theory.
We present the corresponding experiments and a panorama of theoretical frameworks:
– statistical mechanics of ideal gases in traps
– Pensore-Onsager criterion for condensation, correlation functions
– mean-field theory for the interacting Bose gas (nonlinear Schrödinger or Gross-Pitaevskii equation) – Bogoliubov theory for elementary excitations and finite temperatures, superfluidity, equation of state – the Yang-Yang solution for the Lieb-Liniger model of 1D Bosons at finite temperature
– mapping to a classical random walk in the complex plane: counting statistics – nonlinear stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation for dynamics at finite temperature – experiments: Feshbach resonances, optical lattices, atom laser
Approaches: analytical theory, numerical calculations, stochastic simulations

Computer simulations of galaxy formation have evolved drastically in the last decade. Assuming a cosmological model, N- body simulations of dark matter can predict the large scale structure of the universe. Current state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations can furthermore predict properties of galaxy population, such as their clustering, stellar masses, galaxy colours, gas discs etc. A key challenge for the current generation of simulations is to obtain an understanding of how feedback from supermassive black holes and supernovae affect galaxies. In this course we review and discuss the literature that has shaped the field of cosmological galaxy formation simulations, and we outline future challenges for the field.

The lecture and seminar will be fully online.
The general idea is that the lecture will be organized in an asynchronous way, i.e., lecture videos and the material will be made available every week and we will meet for 90mins for follow-up discussions, open questions, as well as to discuss problem sheets.
We will have our first zoom Meeting on Wednesday 8:15 and discuss the exact time plan.

Details about the online lecture will be provided.
The series of lectures is complemented by a practical training at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, Hahn-Meitner-Platz 1, 14109 Berlin, Campus LMC in Berlin-Wannsee.
The practical training includes the macroscopic characterisation of electronic transport (electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient) in a thin film sample,
duration: 1 day, date and time to be determined (at the end of or after SS 2021).
Proof of academic achievement: on the basis of a written report summarizing the experimental results of the parctical training.

Basic knowledge of solid-state physics (electrons in single crystals, electronic dispersion, phonons) is required.
Leistungsnachweis
Proof of academic achievement: on the basis of a written report summarizing the experimental results of the practical training:
4.5 ECTS points
Bemerkung
This lecture series is primarily intended for master students which have already attained good knowledge of solid-state physics. The lectures are complemented by a practical which focuses on the measurement of important transport parameters:
electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of thin film samples. The practical will be held at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie with a written report being part of the requirements to successfully pass the course. Bachelor students are also admitted. However, basics of molecular physics and solid-state physics are expected as well as participation in the practical session.
Lerninhalte Electronic Transport:
• Landauer-Datta transport model,
• Boltzmann transport equation.
Thermoelectric effects:
• Seebeck effect,
• Peltier effect.
Scattering Processes:
• ionized-impurity scattering,
• electron-phonon scattering (deformation-potential scattering),
• electron-electron scattering.
Thermal Transport:
• phonons in periodic crystals,
• thermal transport in the amorphous limit.
