01 Theoretical Framework
The understanding of peripheral urbanisation processes in an era of „planetary urbanisation“
ARL Summer School 2015
Czech Technical University Prague
- „Planetary Urbanization“ (Brenner & Schmid, 2014)
> fundamental economic, political, environmental changes across places, territories and scales alike
- “Methodological Cityism” (Angelo & Wachsmuth, 2014) > overwhelming analytical and empirical focus
on the traditional city and metropolitan form to the
exclusion of other aspects of contemporary urbanisation processes
“Urbanization must then be understood not in terms of some socio-organizational entity called ‘the city’
(the theoretical object that so many geographers,
demographers and sociologists erroneously presume) but as the production of specific and quite heterogeneous spatio-temporal forms embedded within
different kinds of social action” (Harvey, 1996)
ARL Summer School 2015
Czech Technical University Prague
- Urbanisation processes are no longer conterminous with
„City“ or „Metropolis“ as a form of settlement space including certain urban categories based on a city-countryside division - „City“ or „Metropolis“ as ways of framing complex urbanisation processes stand in an increasingly problematic relationship to today‘s socio-spatial reality in flux (Sayer, 1984)
- Urbanisation processes should be understood as extended phenomenon of urbanisation producing new “urbanities”
or new “ways of urban life” within and, crucially beyond traditional cities and metropolitan areas
- Increasing hybrid of „urban“ and „regional“ opens up
new fields of „urban-regional“ („regional-urban?“) research (Soja, 2015)
“Never before have regional approaches been more
important in urban research, and urban emphases more influential in regional development theory and planning.
This increasing fusion of the urban and the regional in theory, empirical analysis, social activism, planning and public policy is creating many new pathways for innovative critical and comparative research, (…). The hybridizing
process I argue is leading to a paradigmatic transformation
of the modern metropolis, an epochal shift in urban form
and ‘ways of life’, (…).” (Soja, 2015)

Thuringia is a heterogeneous mosaic of various entities
strongly shaped by the interrelation of „urban“ and „rural“ processes transforming into a urbanised, „post-rural“ landscape.

Objective
- More sensitive investigation and construction of Sub-Regions
as orientation guide for trans-regional and co-operative development Need
- Stronger co-operative thinking and acting at regional scale of planning and at local scale of municipalities and residents - More extensive investigation of local assets and resources - Understanding resource efficiency as a social process at heart - More interdisciplinary approaches in planning
- Expanded formats of co-management and participation - More trust in local knowledge and strategies developed by grassroots initiatives and civil society
- Critical reflection on funding programs in terms of project selection and distribution of finances
- Differentiated understanding and specification of urbanisation processes within regional development
- New understanding of peripheral urbanisation processes beyond „methodological cityism“ and exclusionary binaries of
urban-rural, urban-suburban, centre-periphery
04 Conclusion & Outlook
“Why not oppose ephemeral cities to the eternal city, and moveable centrality to stable centres?
All audacities can be premised.” (Henri Lefebvre, 1991)
