Management Skills

In today’s competitive world, management is a crucial issue.

Leading individuals and groups effectively is the key to organizational excellence. But it is a myth that there is only one best way to manage. It is important to realize that each of the cultures/

concepts or ways is good for something. No concept or mix of concepts is bad or wrong itself, only inappropriate to its circumstances.

To meet the challenges of a manager and to develop critical leadership skills the course focusses on the following topics:

I. The Manager as a person and management as profession II. Principles of effective management

III. Management styles to be analyzed on the basis of the principles of II.

IV. Mastery of the most important tools: Nonviolent communication, conflict management, designing effective feedback techniques, creative problem solving …

Course Objectives: The course is designed … - To develop an individual leadership vision for success

- To extend the knowledge about leadership and to recognize a structure of the subject - To apply the knowledge and the understanding of key concepts relating to leadership fundamentals

- To enhance leadership ability by developing some relevant skills to manage people effectively, e.g.

presentation skills, nonviolent communication, conflict management, feedback techniques … Assessment:

- Lectures will be interactive requiring participants to undertake some preparation work in between of the two sections which includes self- directed reading both to supplement and consolidate what is being taught and to broaden their individual knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Content of course:

To succeed in your professional life, different skills are indispensable. These skills can be subdivided into professional competences and generic competences.

Main topic of this course is the study of (your own) generic competences, which means the behavior that is of great importance for the professional life.

Some of these generic competences include

• Networking - how to connect with others

• Presentation and visualization skills - how to make things understandable

• Conflict management - how to succeed in critical conversations

• Managing changes and resistance - how to establish innovations

• Dealing with feedback and collegial advice - how to develop yourself and others

In order to master these competences, people need to understand human behavior (including their own) and need to try out different behaviors in different situations.

The course aims the students to challenge themselves in the day-to-day work intellectually and in practical exercises, recognize their behavior and to improve them.

Additionally, the seminar offers the opportunity to work out own ideas of success and closely linked to that the own preferences and values in order to use these information as a guideline for the own career choice. Participants of this course are able to gain experiences in a sheltered room and to use this knowledge as a basis for a personal development planning.

Methodology

The course consists of different methodologies. In this way, presentations, reflection exercises and role plays alternate and build up on each other.

During the whole course, the topics of own behavior reflection and feedback will be a thread in exercises and in the overall course work.

• recognize different kinds of interdependencies and apply analytical and heuristic approaches for the coordination of these interdependencies

• apply several classical cost accounting methods (actual and planned cost accounting, full- and part-cost base, marginal costing etc. ) in the course of extensive case studies

• are able to perform analyses of cost divergence

• are familiar with the Peinreich-Luecke theorem and the relationship between investment and cost accounting

• apply linear programming to plan production programs and learn how to treat intertemporal interdependencies by using dynamic programming

• determinate whether obtaining additional controlling-relevant information in the presence of uncertainty is worthwhile using of the information value concept

• are familiar with the principal-agency problem and know different controlling instruments to alleviate the incentive problem

• apply the main controlling tools in order to solve coordination problems Contents:

The advanced seminar is organized via KLIPS (as contrasted with the ”Zentrale Vergabe” before).

Hence, you have to register in KLIPS in the first allocation stage (”1. Belegungsphase”) from July 20^th until August 1st. The allocation results will be published on August 18th.

You are asked to hand in your topic preferences (3 preferences in descending order) via e-mail to Lars Rothe (lars.rothe@wiso.uni-koeln.de) until August 20^th. A kick-off meeting will take place on August 22nd in room 110 of the WiSo building (2 p.m. - 3 p.m.), in which topics will be allocated and general information concerning the course process will be provided. Your final seminar work needs to be handed in by October 10th. As stated above, there will be 4 weekly seminar appointments on Tuesdays, from October 25th until November 22nd in which participants present their seminar work.

Bachelorseminar “Behavioral Management Science”

General information:

Behavioral Management Science is a new approach which applies research methods and insights from behavioral economics and psychology. The aim is to understand the behavior of individuals in contexts relevant for management by taking, for example, social preferences and behavioral biases into account. Understanding individual human behavior is of high importance for managers and policy makers alike in improving their management decisions. Finally, behavioral insights can help managers and policy makers to inform the design of institutions and organizations which affect individuals’ behavior.

The Bachelorseminar in Behavioral Management Science focuses on one strand of this literature by capturing topics from Behavioral Taxation. More specifically, the following topics covered comprise:

• Tax Compliance Behavior

• Tax Salience Effects

• Tax Complexity Effects

• Risk-Taking Behavior under Taxes

• Fairness and Taxation

Registration:

The registration for the seminar is done via Klips. The number of participants is limited to 15.

The introduction and assignment of topics and supervisors will be administered during the mandatory kick-off meeting on October 12th, 2pm. Prior to the assignment, the different topics will

be introduced to the participants in detail. Then participants state their preferences. The course language is English.

im Wintersemester 2016/17 zum Thema:

„Ausgewählte Probleme der Rechnungslegung nach HGB und IFRS“

I. Belegphase, Themenbekanntgabe, verbindliche Anmeldung und Abgabe der Themenpräferenzen In der ersten Belegphase, d.h. vom 20.07.2016 bis zum 01.08.2016, können Sie das

Bachelorseminar über KLIPS belegen. Die Bekanntgabe der Zuteilung durch KLIPS erfolgt voraussichtlich am 18.08.2016. Für die endgültige Teilnahme am Bachelorseminar müssen Sie sich allerdings noch an unserem Lehrstuhl anmelden.

Die Themen des Bachelor-Seminars werden spätestens am 28.07.2016 bekanntgegeben (Homepage/Aushang).

Die verbindliche Anmeldung zum Bachelorseminar ist vom 22.08. bis zum 09.09.2016 unter Verwendung der dafür vorgesehenen Formulare in unserem Sekretariat (Raum 2.19, WiSo- Hochhaus) bzw. Studierendensekretariat (Raum 2.20, WiSo-Hochhaus) nur persönlich (Ausweispflicht!) möglich. Nur in begründeten Ausnahmefällen kann eine Anmeldung (nach vorheriger Absprache) auch per E-Mail (limbach@wiso.uni-koeln.de) erfolgen.

Zeitgleich mit Ihrer persönlichen Anmeldung können Sie Themenpräferenzen in die zu diesem Zweck ausliegenden Formulare eintragen. Die Äußerung einer Präferenz garantiert nicht die Zuordnung zu einem dieser Themen.

Bitte beachten Sie, dass ein Rücktritt vom Bachelorseminar nur bis zum 09.09.2016 (schriftlich) folgenlos möglich ist. Am 13.09.2016 werden alle erfolgten Anmeldungen dem Prüfungsamt gemeldet; ein späterer Rücktritt bzw. eine evtl. Nichtbearbeitung des zugeordneten Themas wird dann mit „nicht ausreichend (5,0)“ bewertet.

II. Konstituierende Sitzung

Am Mittwoch, den 05.10.2016, 15.30 Uhr bis 17.30 Uhr, werden im Rahmen einer Konstituierenden Sitzung grundsätzliche Fragen zur Bearbeitung der Themen (formal/inhaltlich) und zum Ablauf der Seminarveranstaltung im Seminarraum S 75 (Philosophikum) erörtert. Zudem erfolgt die Zuordnung der TeilnehmerInnen zu den Themen, ggf. auch die Bildung von Präsentationsteams sowie die Bekanntgabe der BetreuerInnen der einzelnen Themen.
