Purchase College, SUNY (New York, USA) Application deadline: Dec 3, 2021
Jonah Westerman
Purchase College, SUNY, seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Art History to teach Museum
& Curatorial Studies and the Arts of Africa and/or the African Diaspora, to begin September 1, 2022.
The successful candidate will have expertise in one or more aspects of the Arts of Africa and/or the African Diaspora as well as professional experience in curatorial practice, a critical approach to the politics of collection and display, and scholarly dedication to rethinking art historical metho- dologies and geographies. We especially seek applicants who are prepared to take on a signifi- cant role in our MA program’s Museum & Curatorial Studies specialization, teaching courses and developing research, curatorial, and other types of collaborations for students with the Neuberger Museum of Art, located on campus.
Teaching responsibilities include the equivalent of five courses per year plus supervision of senior projects and master’s theses. A senior project is a college-wide undergraduate requirement and signature feature of the Purchase curriculum.
The Neuberger Museum of Art is celebrated internationally for its commitment to modern and con- temporary American art, African and Latin American art, and for its excellent exhibitions and pro- grams. The Museum is among the 10 largest museums in New York State, and is the eighth largest university museum in the nation. The Museum’s permanent collection comprises more than 6,000 objects. Its collection of 20th-century American art was established with Roy R. Neu- berger’s gift. It also includes important Latin American and African Art collections. Both the under- graduate and graduate curricula are designed to take advantage of the Museum’s collection and rotating exhibits; MA students focusing on Museum & Curatorial Studies mount a collectively pro- duced exhibition series in their second year.
Purchase College is located 25 miles north of New York City and is primarily an undergraduate institution, with several graduate programs, including an MA in Art History focused on modern and contemporary art, criticism, and theory. Because it houses a unique combination of Liberal Arts and Sciences majors and Arts Conservatory programs, our faculty and staff are committed to interdisciplinary experimentation and the appreciation of intellectual and artistic approaches to research, with an emphasis on writing of all kinds.
