Assistant professor in architectural and urban history, Groningen

University of Groningen, Department of History of Art, Architecture and Landscapes Application deadline: Nov 19, 2021

Cor Wagenaar, University of Groningen

The Department of History of Art, Architecture and Landscapes is hiring an Assistant Professor.

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our team. Our ambition is to help recalibrate our discipline in terms of its expertise as well as its methodologies. We value a critical stance towards the existing body of knowledge and the (ideological) frameworks that shaped it - which sometimes resulted in unacceptable historical distortions and omissions. As a researcher, we are searching for an intellectual daredevil, as a teacher for somebody who inspires trust and teaches students to be critical and think for themselves. If you think you qualify, Groningen – by far the most popular ‘college town’ in the Netherlands and a city with a thriving architectural culture – may be your next step. Job description:

In combination with the chair groups of landscape history and art history, the chair group architec- tural and urban history forms the Department of History of Art, Architecture and Landscape (HAAL), which is part of a Cluster that also accommodates the Departments of Arts, Culture and Media, and Media studies. The chair of architectural and urban history uniquely combines the his- tory of the visual arts, urbanism, architectural history and landscapes, and examines the relation- ships between these domains. The department of HAAL is seeking an Assistant Professor, the position combines teaching (60%) and research (40%). Research is conducted within the Groningen Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG) and its Research Centre Arts in Society

The candidate:

• shares the concept underlying the work of the section of history of art, architecture and urban- ism, and sees knowledge of the past as crucial for the evolution of architecture and urbanism today

• has in-depth knowledge of the architectural and urban history of Europe, preferably including Eastern Europe, from the Middle Ages until the present time
