Assistant Professor, Arts and Material Culture of Africa, Wesleyan University

Wesleyan University, Jan 07, 2022 Application deadline: Dec 1, 2021 Esther Moran

Assistant Professor in the arts and material culture of Africa, Wesleyan University

The Department of Art and Art History at Wesleyan University seeks candidates for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the arts and material culture of Africa, beginning July 1, 2022. The research focus and period of specialization are open; candidates who can teach across historical periods, including before 1900, and who can offer one or more courses on the arts of the African diaspora are welcome to apply. We define African arts broadly and will give full consideration to candidates focusing on visual and material culture who are trained in the discip- lines of Art History, History, Architecture and Urban History, Archaeology, African Studies, or Anthropology.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Art History, History, Architecture, Archaeology, African Studies, Anthropology, or a related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Pro- fessor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. within one year of hire.

Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college; the teaching load is 2/2. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying out a program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. Wesleyan values both scholarship and teaching very highly, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits.

To apply, visit http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/8097. A complete application includes a cov- er letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample, statement of current research, and documentation of teaching experience, including teaching statement, one or two course syllabi, and student evalua- tions. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college's commit- ment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation.

Applications should be submitted online at http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/8097. Applica- tions completed by December 1, 2021 will receive full consideration. If you have questions about the application process please contact Esther Moran, at emmoran@wesleyan.edu or 1-860-685-2682.
