The workshop Scientific Presentation aims to provide participants with necessary skills to successfully and dynamically present scientific papers and research results.
content
This is an activity-based workshop led by theatre professionals whose expertise is in helping the speaker effectively communicate the importance and relevance of the work and the core message in the talk. Repetition is a key aspect of the training so that participants can strengthen the narrative, the emotional tone and the physicality of the talk in order to define and support the speaker’s own dynamic style. Additionally, the workshop can be a means to support ways of promoting oneself professionally.
The workshop offers practical strategies and criterion to check the effectiveness of the presentation. Constructive feedbacks from the trainer and group members, as well as videotaping, give the speaker a healthy amount of input.

Writing good articles is no easy task – even for experienced scientists. Knowing the key criteria that apply to formally reviewing English-language scientific publications and adjusting your own writing process to meet these criteria will substantially increase your chances of having your text published. In this seminar, the necessary knowledge and skills will be taught in concise terms and practiced in hands-on exercises.
content
In the training course ‘Scientific Writing/Getting Research Published’, you will:
learn about the stages of the writing process and how to organize this process effectively and economically master different writing and working techniques using your own texts as a basis
learn how to set the focus of a text and develop its central theme on the basis of the research question familiarize yourself with the rules and principles for publishing in English-language journals learn to recognize and use an appropriate style/choice of words in English-language articles learn how to give constructive criticism and make effective use of feedback received methods
You will learn about the rules and standards that apply to publications in English-language journals. On the basis of diagnostic exercises on the different stages of the writing process, you will reflect on your own writing behavior with a view to optimizing the process and managing it more consciously.
In practical exercises, you will practice writing and working techniques for drafting and editing scientific texts, thus broadening your skills. The focus will be on structuring ideas, text focus, using and editing rough drafts, giving constructive criticism, and accepting criticism. During the course, you will work on your own texts and develop building blocks for texts

Scientists who need to perform presentations contens
Today the ability to present results professionally in academic as well as in business contexts is not to be qualified as an additional skill but as prerequisite. Furthermore, working in international teams is no longer an exception and thus, presenting and communicating in English has to be seen as an implicit standard. The interactive setup of this seminar aims at providing all necessary skills required for the preparation of a successful presentation.
You learn how to structure presentations and how to apply the various techniques appropriately. You will also be given advice on how to use the English language in an idiomatic way.
Throughout the seminar, you will give various short and long individual as well as teampresentations. By the end of the seminar you will receive a comprehensive feedback.

objectives
Scientific publications are frequently the product of collaborative work, yet writing itself remains a fundamentally individual activity and bears the mark of the author’s scientific writing style. To further develop author’s voice, this intensive workshop for advanced writers of English explores so-called ‘benchmark publications’. In the context of this workshop, benchmark publications are defined as research articles, written by scientists across the world, that not only possess native speaker quality but also communicate with a degree of clarity which makes the article a pleasure to read.
With selected benchmark publications at hand, participants explore how experienced international academics combine the ability to respond to the expectations towards text genre and that of addressing their readership in an engaging tone.
Participants learn to pinpoint a variety of stylistic means from which they can choose appropriate elements to design their scientific writing style.
content
submitting a personal writing sample and a selected ‘benchmark publication’
relating style to text genre
exploring structural elements in benchmark publications identifying stylistic features underlying communication strategies writing beyond the comfort zone (Additional draft to be finalized overnight.) collaborating with readers, language professionals, and copy editors
Prior to the workshop, participants will receive a “Call for Benchmark Publications” requesting them to submit a research article as defined above. Simultaneously, they will receive a “Call for Texts” requesting them to submit a sample of their own writing. Both texts are to be submitted to the trainer two weeks ahead of the workshop.
Participants should have achieved the English level C1 and be progressing toward level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

PhD students and interested scientists from Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Engineering who publish scientific texts in English
objectives
Once research findings have been collected, hard work still lies ahead for the scientist wishing to publish. Managing the writing process efficiently and being aware of the expectations of the scientific community and relevant journals certainly facilitate the task. The focus of this workshop for twelve participants lies on the writing process approach, a strategy designed to help writers draft papers, pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses, and revise them effectively while developing reader focus and learning to collaborate with peers and language professionals.
content
investigating the basic structure of research articles identifying expectations determining text genre practising the writing process approach developing author responsibility and reader focus managing the drafting and revision processes competently
Prior to the workshop, participants will receive a “Call for Texts” requesting them to submit a sample of their own scientific writing. This writing sample will provide the basis for peer and trainer feedback during the workshop.
Participants should have achieved the English level B2 and be progressing towards level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
