Legal English Compact: Constitutional & Administrative Law

Content and aims

How does it work in Austria – and how do I say it in English? When you are working internationally, the first question is usually easier to answer than the second, isn’t it?

In this compact course, you will learn how best to talk about key aspects of Austrian public law in English and how to use the relevant legal terminology correctly.

So let’s talk about

• cases and procedure,

• legal principles and legal instruments,

• public authorities and courts of public law – and more.

Find out how to deal with classic vocabulary challenges, such as:

• Key concepts of public law, from “Amtshaftung” to “Weisungsbindung”. How can we refer to the idea of “Verwaltung” in English, e.g. in “Hoheitsverwaltung”,

“Privatwirtschaftsverwaltung” and “mittelbare Bundesverwaltung”?

• Essential phrases, e.g.: to grant vs. to refuse an application; to serve a decision ON a party (why not TO a party?)

• Tricky terms, e.g.: Do “Revision” and “revision” mean the same thing? (Not really.) Does

“Rechtsprechung” translate as “jurisdiction”? (Definitely not.) Can “economy” mean

“Sparsamkeit”? (It certainly can.)

... and get ready to use this terminology in practical contexts, e.g. explaining to “outsiders”

how we do things in Austria. In addition, the tried-and-tested combination of terminology &

communication will give your spoken English a massive boost.

Working method

• Interactive webinar – with group work and lots of speaking practice

• Integrated approach to vocabulary building and communication skills

Technical requirements:

• PC / laptop / tablet / smartphone (possibly private) with camera and microphone as well as internet access, headphones are recommended

• Webinar software platform Zoom or similar
