Legal English Compact, Part 2
Civil law & criminal law
Content and aims
How does it work in Austria – and how do I say it in English? When you are working
internationally, the first question is usually much easier to answer than the second, isn’t it? In this compact course, you will learn how best to talk about fundamental aspects of Austrian law in English, ensuring you use essential legal vocabulary correctly.
In Part 2 we will deal with
• key concepts of civil and criminal law, e.g.:
− contracts and torts, companies vs. partnerships ...
− crime and punishment, crimes vs. misdemeanours ...
− How do you say grob fahrlässig in English? And what about Schuld and Verschulden
• civil vs. criminal procedure, e.g.:
− What do you call the parties in civil and criminal proceedings, in non-contentious proceedings, in appeals?
− Did you know there are (at least) 3 fundamentally different ways of saying verurteilen in English? What exactly do convict and sentence mean? Could you use either of them in a civil case?
− Is the injured party claiming damages? Will the accused be charged with fraud?
• Austrian courts and prosecution authorities, e.g.:
− trial vs. appellate courts, arrest warrants and detention orders ...
− How do you say Senat and Streitwert in English? And what about OLG and OStA?
In Legal English Compact, you will get answers to all these questions – and many more. In addition, you will also give your spoken English a big boost, thanks to the tried-and-tested formula of terminology & communication.
