D iese Aufgaben kann die Südosteuropaforschung ohne in s titu tio n e lle n Rück- h a lt an den deutschen H ochschulen und ohne g ro ß zü g ig e F ö rd e ru n g n ic h t b e w ä ltig e n . Es g ib t d e r z e it in d e r B u n d e s re p u b lik n ic h t ein e in zig e s hoch- sch u le ig e n e s S ü d o s tin s titu t und keinen s p e z ifis c h sü d o ste u ro p ä isch ausge- r ic h te te n L e h r s tu h l. D ie S ü d o s te u ro p a -G e s e lls c h a ft v e r f o lg t diese M iß - stände s e it Ja h re n m it g ro ß e r B e s o rg n is . Sie s ie h t es a ls ih re P flic h t an, die Ö ffe n tlic h k e it und die zuständigen S te lle n auf die Lage d e r Südosteuro- p a fo rs c h u n g h inzu w e ise n und deren b e re c h tig te F o rd e ru n g e n zu v e rtre te n . Sie hat d a h e r H e rrn P r o fe s s o r D r . F ra n z R o n n e b e rg e r b e a u ftra g t, einen
B e r ic h t ü b e r den g e g e n w ä rtig e n Stand d e r S ü d o s te u ro p a fo rs c h u n g zu e r - s te lle n und V o rs c h lä g e f ü r ih r e B e rü c k s ic h tig u n g b e im Ausbau d e r deut- sehen H o ch sch u le n zu u n te rb re ite n . Das R e fe ra t w urde a n lä ß lic h d e r ge- m e in sa m e n S itzung des P rä s id iu m s , des W is s e n s c h a ftlic h e n B e ir a ts und des K u ra to r iu m s d e r S ü d o ste u ro p a -G e se llsch a ft am 15. D ezem ber 1961 in M ünchen g e h a lte n und fand die Z u s tim m u n g d e r A n w esenden. E in e E n t- Schließung, w elche die G rundgedanken des R e fe ra ts zusam m enfaßt, w u r- de am 16. D e z e m b e r 1961 von d e r H a u p tv e rs a m m lu n g d e r S üdosteuropa- G e s e lls c h a ft gutgeheißen.

D ie e u ro p ä is c h e T ü r k e i, zu d e r man auch G rie c h e n la n d zä h lte , o d e r d e r sogenannte B alkan, dessen U m grenzung u n b e s tim m t b lie b , wurden von d e r F o rsch u n g a ls Sondergebiet und S onderproblem gesehen und behandelt, und im ö ffe n tlic h e n B e w u ß tsein M it t e l- und W esteuropas b e h ie lt d e r ״ B a lk a n "
b is in die zw eite H ä lfte des 19. Ja hrh un de rts hinein k u ltu r e ll und e rs t recht p o litis c h den B e ig e sch m a ck des N ic h t-E u ro p ä is c h e n . So kam es, daß im G egensatz zu den n äh er gelegenen G ebieten des engeren Donauraum es d e r
" B a lk a n " n u r zögernd w is s e n s c h a ftlic h e rs c h lo s s e n w u rd e . D ie In itia tiv e g in g , wenn auch u n te r dem p o litis c h e n E in flu ß des P h ilh e lle n is m u s und d e r b a y ris c h -g rie c h is c h e n d yn a stisch e n Beziehungen, von d e r P h ilo lo g ie in G e s ta lt d e r B y z a n tin is tik aus. Sie kann m it dem H a u p ts itz München in D e utsch la nd auf eine e h re n v o lle V e rg a n g e n h e it z u rü c k b lic k e n . Doch auch f ü r die E r fo rs c h u n g des nahen Südostens le is te te die P h ilo lo g ie a ls S ia - w is tik , R o m a n is tik und F in n o - U g r is tik P io n ie rd ie n s te . In M ünchen w urde 1925 die D eutsche A ka d e m ie e r r ic h t e t , die schon frü h i h r A u g e n m e rk dem Südosten zuwandte. 1928 fo lg te in L e ip z ig die G rü n - dung des In s titu ts f ü r M itte l- und Südosteuropäische W irts c h a fts fo rs c h u n g , das a ls se lb stä n d ig e s I n s titu t dem L e h r - und F o rs c h u n g s b e trie b d e r U n i- v e r s it ä t a n g e g lie d e rt w urde. 1930 entstand das S ü d o s tin s titu t in München, 1935 v e rd ic h te te die D eutsche A ka d e m ie ih r e S ü d o s ta rb e it in einem e ig e - nen S üdostausschuß. 1936 ka m es, nach e in e m vo ra u sg e g a n g e n e n k u r z -
