S c h ä f e r ist allen P h y - s i k e r n u n s e r e r Z e i t d u r c h sein „ L e h r b u c h der theore- t i s c h e n P h y s i k " in 3 Bänden b e k a n n t , das vielen G e n e r a t i o n e n von S t u d e n t e n ein didaktisch u n d sach- lich s o r g f ä l t i g g e f ü h r t e r W e g in die t h e o r e t i s c h e Be- h a n d l u n g der N a t u r w i s s e n s c h a f t gewesen ist und wohl noch l a n g e Z e i t bleiben w i r d .

Von S c h a e f e r s z a h l r e i c h e n w i s s e n s c h a f t l i c h e n Ar- b e i t e n sind b e s o n d e r s die ü b e r das u l t r a r o t e Spek- t r u m von M i n e r a l k r i s t a l l e n b e k a n n t geworden, die er mit e i n e r Reihe v o n S c h ü l e r n d u r c h g e f ü h r t hat. Sie e r g a b e n v o r allem, d a ß auch im f e s t e n K r i s t a l l ge- w i s s e G r u p p e n , w i e d a s Sulfation, das N i t r a t i o n usw., ihr c h a r a k t e r i s t i s c h e s S p e k t r u m w e i t g e h e n d unab- h ä n g i g von K r i s t a l l s t r u k t u r u n d K a t i o n behalten.

E i n e F r u c h t d i e s e r A r b e i t e n w a r die g e m e i n s a m mit M a t o s s i v e r f a ß t e M o n o g r a p h i e ü b e r d a s „ U l t r a - r o t e S p e k t r u m " , die 1930 in der S p r i n g e r s c h e n Samm- l u n g ü b e r „ S t r u k t u r der M a t e r i e " erschien. I m letzten J a h r z e h n t h a t sich S c h a e f e r g e m e i n s a m m i t B e r g - m a n n U l t r a s c h a l l p r o b l e m e n z u g e w a n d t u n d a u ß e r - dem, e b e n f a l l s g e m e i n s a m mit B e r g m a n n , ein aus- f ü h r l i c h e s L e h r b u c h der E x p e r i m e n t a l p h y s i k begon- nen, dessen e r s t e r Band b e r e i t s v o r l i e g t .

Nach dem K r i e g e f a n d S c h a e f e r , von s e i n e r lang- j ä h r i g e n W i r k u n g s s t ä t t e v e r t r i e b e n , Z u f l u c h t an der U n i v e r s i t ä t Köln, wo er, e n e r g i s c h u n d a k t i v wie immer, seine K r ä f t e dem W i e d e r a u f b a u der N a t u r - w i s s e n s c h a f t e n z u r V e r f ü g u n g stellte.

E i n g r o ß e r K r e i s von S c h ü l e r n u n d F r e u n d e n überbringt dem Siebzigjährigen die herzlichsten Glück- wünsche. Mögen ihm noch viele J a h r e der F r i s c h e und S c h a f f e n s k r a f t v e r g ö n n t s e i n ! K. W i r t z .

I n der d e u t s c h e n L i t e r a t u r f e h l t schon seit l ä n g e r e r Z e i t ein W e r k , in dem die g r o ß e n F o r t s c h r i t t e , die auf dem G e b i e t der t h e o r e t i s c h e n E l e k t r o c h e m i e im V e r - lauf der l e t z t e n 25 J a h r e e r z i e l t w u r d e n , zusammen- f a s s e n d d a r g e s t e l l t sind. Diese L ü c k e w i r d durch das v o r l i e g e n d e L e h r b u c h a u s g e f ü l l t .

U m bei der F ü l l e d e s v o r l i e g e n d e n Stoffes den Rah- men eines L e h r b u c h e s nicht z u ü b e r s c h r e i t e n , w u r d e die ä l t e r e L i t e r a t u r , die die E r g e b n i s s e der klassischen P e r i o d e der E l e k t r o c h e m i e enthält, nicht berücksich- t i g t . F e r n e r w u r d e auf eine B e s c h r e i b u n g der elektro- chemischen Meßmethoden v e r z i c h t e t u n d auf die tech- n i s c h e n A n w e n d u n g e n e l e k t r o c h e m i s c h e r Reaktionen n u r k u r z h i n g e w i e s e n .

Nach zwei e i n l e i t e n d e n K a p i t e l n , von denen das e r s t e die Definitionen u n d Grundgesetze der Elektro- chemie und das zweite die thermodynamischen Grund- l a g e n e n t h ä l t , w i r d die Solvatation der Ionen, das V e r - h a l t e n der schwachen u n d s t a r k e n E l e k t r o l y t e n sowie die T h e o r i e der i n t e r i o n i s c h e n W e c h s e l w i r k u n g abge- h a n d e l t . D r e i w e i t e r e A b s c h n i t t e sind den E r g e b n i s s e n u n d A n w e n d u n g e n v o n L e i t f ä h i g k e i t s m e s s u n g e n , den e l e k t r o m o t o r i s c h e n K r ä f t e n u n d i h r e r p r a k t i s c h e n A u s w i r k u n g in der P o t e n t i o m e t r i e gewidmet. W e i t e r - h i n - w e r d e n , a u s g e h e n d von den von B r ö n s t e d t ent- w i c k e l t e n A n s c h a u u n g e n ü b e r S ä u r e n u n d Basen, die G l e i c h g e w i c h t e s c h w a c h e r E l e k t r o l y t e e r ö r t e r t . D a r a n

anschließend w e r d e n die e l e k t r i s c h e n Grenzflächen- e r s c h e i n u n g e n , also u. a. die E l e k t r o c h e m i e der Kol- loide, E l e k t r o p h o r e s e , Elektroendosmose u n d die Strö- m u n g s p o t e n t i a l e b e s p r o c h e n . Die beiden l e t z t e n Kapi- t e l b e h a n d e l n die E l e k t r o l y s e u n d P o l a r i s a t i o n sowie die E l e k t r o c h e m i e der Gase.

Um dem L e s e r das S t u d i u m der n e u e r e n Original- l i t e r a t u r zu e r l e i c h t e r n , w e r d e n die G e s e t z e des t h e r m o d y n a m i s c h e n G l e i c h g e w i c h t e s u n t e r B e n u t z u n g der thermodynamischen Z u s t a n d s f u n k t i o n e n abgeleitet, die dann bei der E n t w i c k l u n g der F o r m e l n k o n s e q u e n t a n g e w e n d e t w e r d e n . Auf diese W e i s e ist dem V e r f a s - ser eine im besten Sinne moderne u n d einheitliche Dar- s t e l l u n g des n e u e s t e n S t a n d e s der E l e k t r o c h e m i e ge- l u n g e n , d e r e n L e k t ü r e dem S a c h k e n n e r einen hohen G e n u ß b e r e i t e t . I n den e i n z e l n e n A b s c h n i t t e n w e r d e n jeweils z u n ä c h s t die t h e o r e t i s c h e n G r u n d l a g e n ent- w i c k e l t u n d d a n n die v i e l s e i t i g e n A n w e n d u n g e n , die die Methoden in der w i s s e n s c h a f t l i c h e n F o r s c h u n g und im a n a l y t i s c h e n L a b o r a t o r i u m g e f u n d e n h a b e n u n d noch finden können, e r ö r t e r t . D a s Buch w i r d daher nicht n u r f ü r den r e i f e r e n S t u d i e r e n d e n , dem die G r u n d l a g e n der p h y s i k a l i s c h e n Chemie b e k a n n t sind, als E i n f ü h r u n g in die spezielle E l e k t r o c h e m i e ein will- k o m m e n e r F ü h r e r sein, s o n d e r n auch den in F o r s c h u n g und I n d u s t r i e t ä t i g e n F a c h g e n o s s e n m a n n i g f a c h e w e r t - volle A n r e g u n g e n v e r m i t t e l n .

Als f r ü h e s t e u n t e r den m e t e o r o l o g i s c h e n Zeit- s c h r i f t e n D e u t s c h l a n d s b e g a n n die Zeitschrift für Meteorologie, die d u r c h i h r e n l a n g j ä h r i g e n H e r a u s - geber R. S ü r i n g die T r a d i t i o n der 1884—1938 von der Deutschen u n d Ö s t e r r e i c h i s c h e n Meteorologischen G e s e l l s c h a f t h e r a u s g e g e b e n e n Meteorologischen Zeit- schrift a u f n i m m t , seit Oktober 1946 w i e d e r mit i h r e m E r s c h e i n e n .

Inzwischen l i e g t der erste, a u s 15 H e f t e n b e s t e h e n d e J a h r g a n g vollständig vor u n d erlaubt einen Hinweis auf dieses w e r t v o l l e P u b l i k a t i o n s o r g a n . Von den zahlreichen O r i g i n a l a r b e i t e n , die nicht s e l t e n in Nach- b a r g e b i e t e a u s g r e i f e n , k ö n n e n n u r ganz w e n i g e er- w ä h n t werden. A. S c h m a u ß b e h a n d e l t die z a h l r e i - chen im K r i e g e g e s a m m e l t e n B e o b a c h t u n g e n ü b e r d a s S i c h t b a r w e r d e n von D r u c k w e l l e n u n d die Theo- r i e n ü b e r seine E n t s t e h u n g . C. H o f f m e i s t e r lei- t e t a u s den L e u c h t s t r e i f e n b e o b a c h t u n g e n ein U l t r a - p a s s a t s y s t e m in 80—120 km Höhe ab. F . G e o p h y s i k a l i s c h e P r o - bleme behandeln u. a. H. G. M a c h t mit dem erd- m a g n e t i s c h e n F e l d der P o l a r g e b i e t e und R. P e n n - d o r f mit dem N a c h w e i s der O b e r g r e n z e der Ozon- schicht in 50 km Höhe, w ä h r e n d G. F a n s e l a u die e r d m a g n e t i s c h e n A k t i v i t ä t s z i f f e r n des J a h r e s 1946 v e r ö f f e n t l i c h t . Auch die s y n o p t i s c h e Meteorologie er- f ä h r t g e b ü h r e n d e B e r ü c k s i c h t i g u n g ; so b e s c h r e i b t H. G. K o c h den a e r o l o g i s c h e n A u f b a u bei einer S e r i e von V b - W e t t e r l a g e n und s c h i l d e r t eine lokale A u s g l e i c h s s t r ö m u n g in T h ü r i n g e n . L. E g e r s d o r - f s schätzt die B e r e c h n u n g der E n e r g i e b i l a n z als

B e s t a n d t e i l der W e t t e r v o r h e r s a g e ab, wobei das Vor- h e r s a g e p r o b l e m eine ü b e r s i c h t l i c h e t h e o r e t i s c h e F o r m g e w i n n t . Von besonderem I n t e r e s s e w i r d f ü r man- chen der A u f s a t z von J . K ö 1 z e r ü b e r die E n t w i c k - l u n g eines B a r o t h e r m o g r a p h e n f ü r H ö h e n bis e t w a 50 km sein, in dem die Möglichkeit der V e r w e n d u n g der R a k e t e n als meteorologisches M e ß g e r ä t geschil- d e r t w i r d ; w ä h r e n d in D e u t s c h l a n d bis 1945 k e i n e g r e i f b a r e n R e s u l t a t e e r z i e l t w o r d e n w a r e n , liegen n u n m e h r a u s A m e r i k a die e r s t e n M e ß e r g e b n i s s e bis ü b e r 100 km Höhe v o r .

E i n e n ziemlichen U m f a n g nehmen die s e h r s o r g - f ä l t i g a b g e f a ß t e n l a u f e n d e n W i t t e r u n g s b e r i c h t e ein, die sich ganz auf die r u s s i s c h e B e s a t z u n g s z o n e be- s c h r ä n k e n , wobei leider Ü b e r s c h n e i d u n g e n nicht ganz fehlen. Die regelmäßige Veröffentlichung aller Höhen- w i n d m e s s u n g e n von L i n d e n b e r g d ü r f t e a l l e r d i n g s h e u t e eher in die t ä g l i c h e W e t t e r k a r t e g e h ö r e n als

— wie vor 40 J a h r e n üblich — in eine w i s s e n s c h a f t - liche Z e i t s c h r i f t .

Im g a n z e n k ü n d e t diese Z e i t s c h r i f t von der n u n - m e h r in G a n g kommenden A u s w e r t u n g der r e i c h e n meteorologischen E r f a h r u n g e n der l e t z t e n J a h r e ( z . B . A r b e i t e n ü b e r die C y r e n a i k a , Mazedonien, N o r w e g e n ) , b e s o n d e r s aber von dem immer s t ä r k e r e n E i n d r i n g e n in die höheren A t m o s p h ä r e n s c h i c h t e n . D e r H e r a u s - geber h a t es v e r s t a n d e n , die Z e i t s c h r i f t u n t e r w e s e n t - licher E r w e i t e r u n g des I n h a l t s w i e d e r auf die a l t e Höhe zu b r i n g e n , zumal die w i s s e n s c h a f t l i c h e F o r - s c h u n g in der Ostzone von den v e r s c h i e d e n s t e n Seiten her s t a r k g e f ö r d e r t w i r d . D e r Reiz dieser Studie liegt darin, d a ß u n s der A u t o r bei der V e r f o l g u n g seines philologischen Zie- les durch eine A n z a h l von O r i g i n a l b r i e f e n u n d Ver- ö f f e n t l i c h u n g e n a u s den K r e i s e n der 1603 von dem 18-jährigen römischen Marquese F r e d e r i c o C e s i g e g r ü n d e t e n n a t u r w i s s e n s c h a f t l i c h e n A c a d e m i a dei lincei f ü h r t , in d e r e n L i s t e n sich 1611 auch G a l i l e i einschrieb. T r o t z des d e t e k t i v i s c h e n S c h a r f s i n n s des A u t o r s bleibt es u n g e w i ß , ob der Name T e l e s k o p von Cesi selbst oder von dem L u c h s G i o v a n n i D e m i - s i a n i erdacht w u r d e . A u f k l ä r u n g k ö n n t e ein viel- leicht in A u g s b u r g a u f f i n d b a r e r Brief von J o h a n n e s F a b e r an M a r c u s W e i s e r b r i n g e n , w o r i n F a b e r ü b e r ein am 14. A p r i l 1611 in Cesis V i l l a auf dem J a n i c u l u m zu E h r e n Galileis v e r a n s t a l t e t e s G a s t m a h l b e r i c h t e t , bei dem Galilei der G e s e l l s c h a f t das Tele- skop v o r f ü h r t e und sie die Gebäude des L a t e r a n s u n d die J u p i t e r m o n d e beobachten ließ.
