Ever s i n c e i t s f o u n d a t i o n , IIASA h a s assumed a m o n i t o r i n g r o l e i n t h e f i e l d o f G l o b a l M o d e l i n g . Whenever a m a j o r model r e a c h e d a s t a t e o f c o m p l e t i o n , a IIASA c o n f e r e n c e was convened i n w h i c h t h i s model was p r e s e n t e d a n d d i s c u s s e d by a ( r a p i d l y e m e r g i n g ) " G l o b a l M o d e l i n g Community" o f s c h o l a r s a c t i v e l y o r p a s s i v e l y w o r k i n g o n g l o b a l m o d e l s o r p r o b l e m s o f g l o b a l

m o d e l i n g .

The 6 t h IIASA G l o b a l Modeling C o n f e r e n c e , h e l d a t IIASA 17-20 O c t o b e r 1 9 7 8 , was d i f f e r e n t i n s c o p e i n a s f a r a s it was m a i n l y d e v o t e d t o a n a s s e s s m e n t o f t h e s t a t e - o f - t h e - a r t . The

f i r s t ( m a j o r ) p a r t o f t h e c o n f e r e n c e was o r g a n i z e d a r o u n d s e v e n m a j o r t o p i c s ( r a t h e r t h a n m o d e l s ) ; a l l c o n t r i b u t i o n s and p a p e r s p e r t a i n i n g t o t h i s f i r s t p a r t h a v e b e e n i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t o a
