Why are we so fascinated by outlaw heroes and why do we still think so positively of many of these famous bandits despite their various barbaric acts?
The earliest known written reference to Robin Hood was made in 1370. Over the next 650 years, the story was told through historical chronicles, a multitude of songs, plays, poems, novels, operas, musicals, movies, cartoons, comics and series.
We will first identify themyth’s historical
background: what is true, what is fictional? We will also be working with original illustrations and include a cinematic overview from silent black &
white films totoday’s blockbusters.
Finally other outlaw figures, both real and fictitious, will be looked at more closely: from our own Swiss William Tell, the famous American robber Jesse James, the iconic Che Guevara, the Netflix versions of the adventures of Pablo Escobar and Bonnie & Clyde, the rise of the previouscentury’s superheroes and even dystopian protagonists like Katniss Everdeen. Indeed, all of these social rebels are closely linked to the cultural phenomenon of the mythical Robin Hood.
Students will also be able to influence the course program with suggestions of their own.
So if you want to hear more, I look forward to seeing you soon!
