BOOK BUZZ

Bonnie Easton

This month’s selections feature offbeat characters in unusual stories.

A Ghost in the Throat by Doireann Ni Ghriofa is a lyrically written tale of two women. A contemporary mother of young children becomes obsessed with the poetry of 18th century noblewoman, Eibhlen Ni Chonbaill, whose work “A Lament for Art O’Laoghaire” is considered one of the most famous and beautiful laments in the Irish language.

In an elite Catholic boarding school run by nuns, a 16-year- old schoolgirl disappeared with the charismatic male art teacher and neither was ever found again. Twenty-five years later, an investigative journalist tries to solve the mystery in The Temple House Vanishing by Rachel Donohue, a gothic novel.

Nora: A Love Story of Nora and James Joyce by Nuala O’Connor is a fictionalized rendering of the relationship between novelist James Joyce and his partner Nora Barnacle.

When Joyce met her, she was a maid at Finn’s Hotel and joined him in his travels in his search for fame even while they lived most of their lives in poverty.

Another fictionalized biography of a real-life person is Island Queen by Vanessa Riley. Dorothy (Dolly) Kirwan Thomas was a slave fathered by her Irish planter owner in the 1700s. She escaped and worked hard to buy her freedom and the freedom of her mother and sister from her father to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful landowners in the colonial West Indies, acquiring several lovers along the way. She was one of the most unorthodox women of her day.
