Neues MeBverfah ren zum Bestimmen des Geliergrads von PVC
New method for determining the degree of gelation of PVC
verfahren mittels MFI-Gerat vorgenommen.

The characterisation of the structural condition of PVC has hitherto been carried out using a modified method involving the use of a melt flow
index (MFI) instrument. One of the disad
vantages of this method is that the fig
ures obtained cannot be reproduced un
der practical conditions. To eliminate these drawbacks, a new method of deter
mining the degree of gelation of PVC has been developed . The method described in this article gives results with good re
producibility. It was developed at the department for plastics processing of RWTH Aachen, under the direction of Prof. Dr.-lng. Michaeli.
Introduction
The properties of finished articles, which are important for the practical use of many rigid and flexible PVC products, often depend on the microstructure of the material from which they are made. Fusion or gelation takes place under the influence of pressure, shear and heat and essentially determines the morphology pro
duced and therefore the resultant material and compo
nent properties. This means that effective quality tests must be carried out in PVC processing. Here, the de
gree of gelation has proved to be a suitable criterion . Methods used until now have tended to be insuffi
ciently accurate . Since the traditional method , using a capillary rheometer and MFI instrument is cumber
some and inaccurate, it was decided to develop an instrument that would be simple and which would also exclude the effects on test results of such factors as different surfaces of test cylinder, plunger and nozzle and differences in the way the instrument was oper
ated and cleaned. The idea was to develop an auto
matic measuring instrument.
Measuring principle
Using a punch travelling at constant speed , the heated specimen material is forced through a sharp-edged nozzle. The force exerted by the material on the test nozzle is measured with a force transducer, this being the quantity used to assess the degree of gelation.
To eliminate the "wall effects" observed with the old method, nozzle and cylinder are kept separate (Fig. 1 ) . During the test, a constant force i s produced in the nozzle along the whole of the measuring distance, this being correlated with the state of gelation of the speci-
trennt voneinander gelagert (Abb. 1 ) .
abgesetzt.

men. A speed-controlled d . c . motor enables the punch to travel forward at a constant speed. The motor speed is reduced correspondingly by means of a spur gear and a wormgear spindle.
Results
The conditions for obtaining reliable information about the state of gelation of the PVC material under investi
gation are good reproducibility and maximum possible resolution of the test results.
Tests were carried out on three different materials under the conditions listed in Table 1 .
Fig. 2 shows typical measurement patterns for the new method with two specimens, one with low gelation the other highly gelled . In the force vs. time curve , one recognises the compression phase at the start, during which the material is pre-compressed to 50N . The ac
tual measuring phase follows after the heating-up phase. The pattern of the results obtained clearly shows the constant force in dependence of time and thus also of punch travel . To assess reproducibility, ten determinations per material were carried out and evaluated. The percentage variation of the test data was calculated as follows :

£ =- · 1 00 % F
where F is the maximum test data difference and F the mean test figure . The results obtained showed

good reproducibility (see Table 2) . The greater varia
tions encountered in the case of material II are due to the force being too low, resulting from the fact that test conditions were not ideal for this particular mate
rial .
In an extensive programme of investigation, external influences and the effects on the samples of different cleaning stages were examined . With minimum clean
ing, only the rest of the material was forced out of the cylinder. In the case of dry cleaning, paper was used afterwards and, in the third stage, solvent was used additionally. The results are given in Table 3. F is the mean value taken from two determinations, and .:1F the difference between the test data . The good reproduc
ibility allowed a mean value to be produced from two figures. The percentage deviation of this mean value from the mean value shown in the reproducibility analy
sis, Table 2, is given under e. Deviations produced in the former method and due to the previously examined material, did not appear here. Reproducibility was found to be good even when there was minimum cleaning.

deuten.

Another criterion for assessing the method of determi
nation is the resolution of the determination quantity.
Small L/D ratios and slow test speeds proved to be an advantage. Fig. 3 shows the force profiles of an im
pact modified rigid PVC for different test conditions, and Fig. 4 the functional connection between the measured force F and the degree of gelation G. The states of gelation can be well differentiated.
