The concept of the cosmo­

politan can be traced to Goethe.

Writing in Thuringia, his works spread the idea far and wide that we are all citizens of the world in which we live. This means dealing with each other openly, since those who box themselves in also isolate themselves from the rest of the world.

Southwest of Erfurt two mo­

torways intersect, and their paths will soon also be crossed by a high­

speed railway line – symbolic of Thuringia’s accessibility. And a sign of Thuringia’s openness to bene­

ficial encounters of all kinds.

Nur in den vierzig Jahren der deutschen Teilung befand sich Thüringen in einer

»Randlage«. Unmittelbar nach Öffnung der innerdeutschen Grenze 1989 haben die Thü­

ringerinnen und Thüringer damit begonnen, sich ihre zentrale Lage in Deutschland wieder zunutze zu machen. Mit Erfolg. Thüringen inspiriert.

One of the oldest European trade routes, the via regia connecting Paris and Kiev, passes through the state of Thuringia. From as early as the Middle Ages, travellers from all over the world found the ideal conditions for world trade here. And being open to the world doesn’t just mean import and export of goods, but also creative open­mindedness towards new ideas and impulses.

And wherever impulses fall on fertile ground, new ones spring up. Ideas originating on Thuringian soil have gone on to make waves

throughout the world: Friedrich Fröbel’s idea of giving children a comprehensive, cosmopo­

litan upbringing, Arnoldi’s concept of insu­

rance. To say nothing of the work of the artists and architects of the Weimar Bauhaus, whose standards are still valid for architecture and design today.

It was only during the forty years when Germany was divided that Thuringia found itself on the «outskirts». Immediately fol­

lowing the opening of Germany’s internal border in 1989, Thuringians began to once again take advantage of their central position in Germany – with striking success. Thuringia is inspirational.

enne : le premier a été ouvert par Friedrich Frö­

bel à Bad Blankenburg en 1840. Son idée a depuis fait le tour du monde. Le terme alle­

mand lui­même a été repris dans de nombreu­

ses langues. Fröbel a éga ­ lement créé des jouets pédagogiques qui trou­

vent encore leur place à l’école maternelle d’aujourd’hui. Parmi d’autres, le célèbre archi­

tecte américain Frank Lloyd Wright (= musée Guggenheim à New York) a puisé son inspiration dans les formes cubiques créées par Fröbel.

Fröbel toys The kindergarten is a Thuringian invention, the first one having been founded in 1840 by Friedrich Fröbel in Bad Blankenburg. His idea spread from here to the rest of the world, and even the German word «kindergarten»

has been adopted in many languages. Fröbel also made educational toys that are still be­

loved by children today.

Famous architects, including American Frank Lloyd Wright (Guggenheim Museum in New York), have been inspired by Fröbel’s cubic forms.

For the future of the aviation industry

Not only the future of the automobile but also that of avia­

tion is being created in Thuringia. The N3 Engine Overhaul Services GmbH & Co. KG works in Arnstadt has been built as a joint venture of Rolls­Royce plc and Lufthansa Technik AG.

It overhauls Rolls Royce engines for Airbus models ranging from the A 330 and A 340 to the A 380 wide­bodied jet. There were good reasons for choosing Arnstadt. The availability of well­trained and highly motivated skilled workers. The opti­

mal infrastructure and the transport advantages of the nearby Erfurt motorway access.
