John says: “I am John Guerin, a retired military; I’m a retired colonel. I spent 29 years and seven months in the military.” John is therefore a former member of the US Army.
1
John says: “We were involved in Vietnam because we were part of a very large treaty organisation.
Part of the world treaty that if your country in Austria as an example was attacked by someone we would as part of this treaty be here to support you. That’s the way we operate in the United States.” If the US has a treaty with a country, they will therefore help that country.
2
John says: “I honestly didn’t intend to stay in the service for 30 years. I planned to go in like many of you have to go in and train and do your year or six months of duty and become skilled at some level.” John’s original intention was therefore to be a short-term soldier.
3
John says: “And I was commissioned through college, a program, through a college program.” John joined the army therefore as part of a university plan.
4
John says: “I went to Ranger School where you learned to take care of yourself in the jungle, and in the mountains and here and there and yonder.” In Ranger School, John therefore learned to survive in all kinds of terrain.
5
John says: “I did spend 2 plus years in Vietnam, had a number of very close calls but thank the Good Lord I am still alive and have all my parts.” In the war, John was therefore in many dangerous situations.
6
John says: “But I would recommend to you… those that have to go into the service or do community service that you do that and do it proudly for your country.” John advises young people to therefore feel honored to serve their nation.
7
John says: “It makes you appreciate what your country stands for, and it also makes you appreciate how good your family has been to you over the years getting you to the age you are in school and taking care of you.” According to John, serving your country therefore makes you grateful to your parents.
