Postdoctoral Researcher / Research Assistant in Microbial Ecology
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist, who wants to establish his or her own field of research in the field of microbial ecology with a focus on metabolic physiology and genetics of ecologically relevant microorganisms in aquatic or terrestrial habitats. An alternative orientation is the field of systems biology (‘multi omics’, integrative omics), with emphasis on the application of different high- throughput methods, in order to investigate and understand the interaction of microorganisms in biogeochemically relevant communities. Acquisition of third-party funds and collaboration with ongoing coordinated research projects (Excellence cluster “Balance of the Microverse“, Excellence centre iDiv, CRC AquaDiva) in our very dynamic international research group is expected. This position offers the possibility of further education and habilitation.
Your responsibilities:
• Establishment of a small research group in an own research area in the field of microbial ecology or systems biology
• Teaching courses (exercises, practical training, seminars) in the bachelor study programs Biology and Biogeosciences in German language, and in the master study programs Ecology, Evolution and Systematics as well as Microbiology and Biogeosciences to the extent of 4 LVS in English language

Your profile

Doctoral Researcher in Molecular Microbial Ecology (m/f/d)
commencing on September 1, 2021 or at the earliest possible date in the project “From the Forest Canopy to the Aquifer:
Role of Microbial Processes in the Origin and Fate of Nitrate in the Earth´s Critical Zone” (B05).
Background
This project aims to explore the interaction and niche differentiation between key microbial players involved in the formation and removal of nitrate in groundwater. Combining molecular approaches with novel cultivation techniques, we will address the role of complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox) in groundwater nitrification, the effect of geologic setting on the preferred nitrate reduction pathway, and how nitrogen loss is supported by linkages between different nitrate reducing processes.
Your responsibilities:
Analysis of microbial groups involved in nitrification, denitrification, anammox, and DNRA by molecular techniques and assessment of process rates using 15N-based approaches
Enrichment of microbial consortia involved in groundwater nitrate reduction using novel high- throughput cultivation techniques and bioreactors
Characterization of enriched consortia by microscopy and metagenomics/-transcriptomics
Work on a scientific qualification project: doctorate
Writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
Presenting results at national and international conferences
Your profile
M.Sc. degree in microbiology, biogeochemistry, geo-ecology or similar fields is necessary;
candidates expected to earn their degree by September 2021 are welcome to apply
Solid knowledge of microbial ecology of the nitrogen cycle and biogeochemistry of aquatic environments is expected
Experience with molecular methods to investigate microbial communities in environmental samples are needed (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, qPCR); experience with (anaerobic) cultivation techniques and with the analysis of next generation sequencing data would be desirable but are not mandatory
Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken, are desirable

Das Thünen-Institut für Holzforschung ist ein experimentell arbeitendes Forschungsinstitut, das sich mit vielen Aspekten der stofflichen Nutzung von Holz und anderen Materialien auf Basis von Lignocellulose beschäftigt.
Die naturwissenschaftliche Expertise ist stark interdisziplinär ausgeprägt und reicht von grundlegenden Forschungsfragen bis zu angewandten Problemstellungen. Die Stelle ist im Thünen-Institut für Holzforschung im Arbeitsbereich Gesundheit und Verbraucherschutz angesiedelt, der sich u.a. mit nationaler und
internationaler Forschung zu holzschädigenden Organismen beschäftigt.
Holzzerstörenden Mikroorganismen (Bakterien und Pilze) sind von besonderer Bedeutung bei der Verwendung von Holz in Gebäuden und im Außenbereich. Durch die Klimaveränderung wird eine veränderte Gemeinschaft von holzschädigenden Organismen und das Auftreten von invasiven Arten mit noch unbekannten
Auswirkungen erwartet. Um diese Veränderungen in Artenzusammensetzung, -häufigkeit, deren
Schadpotenzial sowie deren gebäude-/holzartspezifisches Auftreten zu erfassen und zu überwachen, soll ein Monitoringprogramm etabliert werden.
Die Untersuchungsstandorte umfassen sowohl Gebäude und Holz im Außenbereich, als auch ausgewählte Standorte mit Totholzvorkommen. Die Arbeitsschwerpunkte liegen in der Probennahme, der Vorbereitung für ein Amplicon-Sequenzing, der Erstellung einer Datenbank und dem Auswerten der Daten.
