Capital Campaign

Matching gift opportunity of $ 100,000 for pledges received in March 2020!

All pledges received during the month of March are eligible for our Match Madness.

This is a great opportunity to make your pledge go further!

Thank you for your attention and thoughtful prayers and pledges to improve your church home. Our Preparing the Way Capital Campaign has been in the Pledge Phase for the past year. As we approach and finalize the Design/Build Phase, we need continued prayers for our success.

“Many hands make light work!” Often times we think how can my $100, $500 or

$1,000 yearly donation may an impact on such a large project. If each parish family that has yet to donate pledged $1 per day for the next three years that would exceed one million dollars. Each dollar is important, regardless of the total amount given individually. Please consider a gift.

March Match Madness! Make your gift go further these last weeks of the pledge drive by taking advantage of the generous pledge matching opportunity. One time gifts received during March will also be matched.

Once the pledge drive is over, can I still make a donation? When the pledge drive officially ends on March 31st, the Capital Campaign Committee will start to make decisions on what can be accomplished with the amount of pledges received.

Donations after the pledge drive concludes are always welcome.

Questions? Comments? Your opinion matters. As always, if you have any questions or ideas for ways to enhance the church or would like to be considered for the Design/

Build Team call the parish office at 785-273-0710 or email campaign@ctktopeka.org.

Begin with the End in Mind

It is said that when we begin a journey we must always begin with the end in mind. In other words I have to know where I’m going; otherwise I will end up wandering aimlessly. However, if I know my destination, I can plan my course accordingly. Good choices take me closer to the destination, and poor choices take me further away.

The same is true in the Christian life. Discipleship is a journey. Jesus tells us to take up our cross and follow Him. In His Transfiguration He shows us where this journey is ultimately headed. Jesus lets His chosen witnesses, Peter, James, and John, glimpse His heavenly glory showing through His humanity. This anticipates the Resurrection which lies beyond the Cross.

Jesus did this, among other things, to strengthen these three Apostles for the scandal of the Cross. He does something similar for us. Jesus’

Transfiguration shows us where we are ultimately going. All of our choices are meant to lead us closer to this destination. Particularly during Lent we are invited to consider ways we may have “gotten off course” and take some steps to make “course corrections.”

So, as we contemplate the glory of Jesus’ Transfiguration today, may the Lord help us to persevere in carrying our Cross so that we may also share the joy of His Resurrection.

Until next time, God bless you, Fr. Matthew

The Gift of Confession

During Lent, of course we take very seriously the importance of going to the sacrament of confession. One point I’ve wanted to make for sometime is this: it’s important that we remember HOW we go to confession.

Let us remember that we do not need to tell the entire story of every sin. This is a blessing, because when we focus on just the sin itself we are able to focus on the part that God is choosing to forgive in the beauty of the sacrament.

Though of course words of encouragement and advice can be very helpful during reconciliation, the one takeaway I always try to remind myself of as much as possible is the simple fact that the Lord has forgiven my sins as I leave the confessional. And, if I still have questions about my spiritual life, I know that I can trust that the Lord has forgiven me and that was the purpose of the sacrament.

Let us truly believe, as we journey to the confessional during this Lenten season, that the Lord truly does forgive us, and let us enjoy the state of grace with which he blesses us.

Until next time, Fr Zielinski Suspension of Distributing Communion From the Chalice

Due to the persistence of the flu and the arrival of the corona virus in the United States we will suspend distributing Communion from the chalice until things have calmed down. Please remember that we receive the fullness of the Sacrament of the Eucharist even from the smallest piece of a consecrated host. Please pray for all who are suffering from these illnesses and those who are looking for a cure.

Lenten Prayer for Transformation Loving Father, I invite you into my life today and make myself available to you. Help me to become the-best- version-of-myself by seeking your

will and becoming a living example of your love in the world.

Open my heart to the areas of my life that need to change in order for me to carry out the mission and experience the joy you have imagined for my life. Inspire me to live the Catholic faith in ways that are dynamic and engaging. Show me how to best get involved in the life of my parish. Make our community hungry for best practices and continuous learning. Give me courage when I am afraid, hope when I am discouraged, and clarity in times of decision. Teach me to enjoy uncertainty and lead your Church to become all you imagined it would be for the people of our times. Amen.

CRS Ricebowl

What is Lent “Lent is our time of preparation.

A 40-day journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, Lent is a journey that spans Ash Wednesday through Holy Week, culminating in the great celebration of Easter. As Catholics, the spiritual pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving guide us in daily reflection on our

own lives as we strive to deepen our relationship with God and neighbor - no matter where in the world that neighbor may live.

What should I give up for Lent? The Catechism invites Catholics to abstain from meat during Fridays in Lent. Preparing meatless meals - like the ones we collect from countries around the world - is a great Lenten activity for families, offering an experience of global solidarity without ever needing to leave the kitchen! In addition to meatless Fridays, Catholics are also invited to offer daily sacrifices.

By giving up little things - coffee, candies and more we make room for God to act in our lives in new ways, and have the opportunity to give the money we save to those most in need.

Lenten Alms Change Lives Our almsgiving has the power to transform the world. During Lent, CRS Rice Bowl invites you to reflect on some of the lives that are changed through Lenten almsgiving. Read stories of hope from Vietnam, Kenya, and Honduras - and be sure to reflect with your family using our Lenten family resources.

Mary, Undoer of Knots

As we make our way through Lent we may find ourselves feeling “stuck” in a particular pattern of sin or a character flaw or imperfection. The Blessed Virgin Mary’s intercession can be of great help in

“undoing” these “knots” in our lives.

Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exist in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exists in my life. You know very well how desperate I am, my pain, and how I am bound by these knots. Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot [Mention your request here]. I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all.

You are my hope. O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom from my chains. Hear my plea.

Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge!

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. Amen.

Sole Reason’s Annual Lenten New Sneaker Drive

(For a lot of kids they deal with this is the only new thing that they get during the year). Monetary donations also accepted (make check payable to Sole Reason). Sole Reason is also looking for golf teams and hole sponsors for their golf tournament. A Prayer for our Military:

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our goal is to provide prayer support and recognition for the men and women of the Christ the King

community who are serving on active duty in the United States Armed Forces. If you have a family member or close friend serving on active duty who could use our community’s prayer support for their health, well being and safe return, call the parish office, 785-273-0710. Please provide their rank and which branch of the service they are in. If your loved one is no longer enlisted, please let us know that as well.

There will be no confessions once the Triduum begins (Thursday April 9th - Easter Sunday, April 12th). Our Communal Penance Service will be at CTK on March 31s.

Do you know someone who wants to come into full communion into the church? Then invite them to join our RCIA class! Our classes have begun. We meet in the John XXIII room and meet most Sundays through Holy Saturday. Remember most people join the church because they have been INVITED by someone who is already an active member, so I encourage you all to reach out to anyone who may be interested. Jesus the Bridegroom a Divine Love Story

While many a man throughout history has jokingly described his wedding day as his funeral, Jesus of Nazareth is the only man who ever solemnly described his funeral as his wedding day. Join Deacon candidate John Langer, as we take a deeper look at the love of God and the passion of Christ through a Jewish understanding of the Bridegroom Messiah. Langer will explore these concepts over a four week series of light hearted lectures engaging us to look at the bridegroom and what it means to our Catholic Faith. Please join us for this Lenten series Wednesdays through March 25th at 7:00 pm in Sacred Heart Church Hall. For additional information contact the parish office at 234-3338.

Walking With Moms in Need, A Year of Service

Pregnant and parenting moms in need are in our parishes and neighborhoods. As Pope Francis reminds us, our parishes should be

“islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference.” Everyone in our parish community should know where to refer a pregnant woman in need. Beginning March 25, 2020, the Church will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the papal encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life). This anniversary gives us a wonderful opportunity to assess, expand and better share the resources available to pregnant women and families in need at our parish level. We invite all parishioners to join the “Walking With Moms”

initiative and a year of service.
