Next Sunday, April 14, is the beginning of the most important week in the liturgical year. Holy Week truly takes us to the heart of our faith and the culmination of salvation history. All of God’s covenants with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David were preparations for this week. Indeed all of the Old Testament is a preparation for Jesus’ Life, Death, and Resurrection. And, as important as celebrating Jesus’ Incarnation and Nativity at Christmas is, even this reaches its ultimate purpose in His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

Prior to Christ Jesus’ Death and Resurrection there was at best a hope of salvation. Now salvation is a reality. Holy Week truly is the “week that changed the world.”

The liturgies of Holy Week are a memorial of the events of this pivotal week in history. However, when we say memorial we don’t mean simply a recalling of some events in the distant past while we remain comfortably in the present. In the liturgy “memorial” indicates that in some way we participate in the events memorialized. God’s grace bridges the gap of time and space between what happened in Jerusalem roughly 2,000 years ago and what will happen right here in our parish this Holy Week.

It all starts with Palm Sunday. At the beginning of Mass we will bless palm branches and listen to the Gospel telling of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on the first day of that week which changed everything.

When we do this, we are there with the crowd, singing “Hosanna!”, covering the road with palm branches, and accompanying Jesus as He rides into Jerusalem.

And just like that crowd 2,000 years ago, we see how quickly things turn from joyous to tragic. In a few short days the crowd that welcomed Jesus in triumph saw Him tortured, crucified, and laid in a tomb. We join them as we take part in the proclamation of the Lord’s Passion during Mass.

As space and time are “collapsed” in the liturgy, we are somehow taken up into the mysteries celebrated on Palm Sunday and throughout the rest of Holy Week. We are woven into the fabric of salvation history and in this way share more fully in the salvation Jesus won for us by His Death and Resurrection.

We are not always conscious of this profound

reality which takes place in every liturgical

celebration. So, may the Lord give us the eyes of

faith to see the amazing realities which lie behind

the signs and symbols, the words and gestures of

the liturgies during this Holy Week. Thus may we

experience Holy Week more and more as the

week that truly changed the world.

Repent and Believe in the Gospel

The call to repent, to turn away from sin and back to God, runs throughout the Lenten season. Our readings today remind us that God is rich in mercy and ready to save us. This is why Jesus came and died on the Cross.

However, God is not going to save us without our cooperation. If we are unwilling to acknowledge our sins and need for a savior, we tie God’s hands, so to speak.

One of the best ways to put repentance into practice is through the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. God’s grace is what actually brings about transformation and conversion in our lives and regularly making a good Confession is a powerful way to cooperate with this work of grace, turning away from sin and being faithful to the Gospel.

In preparing for Confession, I encourage you to look at what you have done wrong but also to consider the good you have failed to do. It is also helpful to ask God to reveal the thoughts and attitudes which fuel our sins. We should bring all of this to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

To further cooperate with the grace we receive in this sacrament it is also helpful to identify a virtue that needs to be strengthened and even to ask the priest for some advice on how to cultivate that virtue.

This week the parishes in Topeka will be offering communal penance services for you to take advantage of this wonderful sacrament. The times and locations are listed in this bulletin.

May God continue to renew us in Christ Jesus this Lent.

Until next time, God bless you, Fr. Matthew

Unplanned

I recently saw the movie,

“unplanned” which is an account of Abby Johnson’s tumultuous years working for an abortion provider in Texas. As many of you have heard, there are certain parts of

the movie that vividly depict the horrific nature of abortion procedures.

I have to say, though I have taken pro life matters very seriously for a number of years, having prayed the Rosary in front of clinics a number of times and even volunteered at pregnancy centers for service hours, this movie definitely deepened my resolve even further to stand up for the right to life in a world so plagued by a prevalent culture of death.

There is so much more that could be said, and I certainly don’t have the space to do so here. Most of all I could not possibly express my sentiments more eloquently than Archbishop Naumann already has expressed his regarding the movie. I would encourage everyone to read his article about it in the leaven, and I would also encourage you to see the movie if you are able.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of all Christians help us and guide us to choose life just as she did.

Until next time, Fr Zielinski

CTK P ARISH C APITAL C AMPAIGN U PDATE

What is the campaign and what is happening first?

This is a historic fundraising initiative that will address immediate needs at our parish and help us better achieve our mission. Our mission is to extend Christ’s Kingdom by teaching, sanctifying and serving all those Jesus gives to our parish with the fullness of the Catholic faith.

Church Interior and Accessibility Renovations

Our parish facilities have several furnishing whose structural integrity is diminished to a point that they are not cost effective to repair. The focus during our renovations will be on longevity and maintainability as well as increased parishioner accessibility.

Look around, and we think you’ll agree that the following matters should be improved to help enrich our encounter with God and other parishioners.

Pews, religious images, flooring, altar, lighting, sound system, accessibility (inside and out), and mechanical equipment.

See the website for images of what is to come from this campaign. This is just the beginning.

www.ctktopeka.org

Our Campaign Prayer

Please pray daily that our campaign will give God glory and accomplish His will for our parish.

Lord Jesus Christ our King!

We thank you for the blessings we have received in the life of our parish and look forward to the many gifts yet to come.

Guide us as we undertake our Preparing the Way Capital Campaign.

May we give ourselves entirely, body and soul, to You in this effort.

Instruct and prepare the way for our parish to achieve our mission of extending Your Kingdom and forming disciples

in the fullness of Catholic faith for generations to come.

You live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

St. Joseph, pray for us.

The Holy Land Collection Ȃ April 19th

The Collection for the Holy Land, in the words of Paul VI is "not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities."

The Franciscan Monastery is home to the Holy Land Franciscan Friars, whose purpose is to support the Holy Land, its people and its holy sites. The Franciscan Friars’ work in the Holy Land is vital. As Pope Francis says, “We will not resign ourselves to imagining a Middle East without Christians.” We preserve the holy places and make it possible for Christians to remain in the land of Jesus.

Please visit the Franciscan Monastery's website for more information at myfranciscan.org/about/our-mission.

FAMILY LENTEN ACTIVITIES

This week we journey to Gaza & encounter Ona. She is a mother of two and always wanted to be a “shining woman” in her community. She studied hard and eventually earned a teaching degree but in Gaza, jobs are hard to find. CRS matches workers with Job opportunities in Gaza. Ona applied for an internship as a teacher and was hired to teach Math. Ona now own tutoring center and says “When people encourage you, you start to think in a more creative way.”

When she looks to the future, her hope is that her daughters can achieve their dreams.

FIRE & Spark LL will meet next week, April 14 @ 7PM Come to Spark and learn more about the Passover. We will have a few foods of the Seder to taste.

Spark LL is for Students grades 6-8 Fire is for Students grades 9-12.

Catholic social teaching as found on crsricebowl.org focus this week is: Dignity of Work & the Rights of Workers.

“Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, we remember that, Jesus spent years working as a carpenter. Work is important to help people fulfill their potential.

And everyone must receive a fair wage to provide for themselves and their families. ”

As you keep up your Lenten promises, perhaps reflect on what you can do to act on this social teaching.

Holy Moments

In Matthew Kelly’s new book, The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity, he writes that holiness is possible for each and every one of us. We achieve this holiness by creating Holy Moments. Kelly explains that “A Holy Moment is a moment when you are being the person God created you to be, and you are doing what you believe God is calling you to do in that moment. It is an instance when you set aside self-interest, personal desire, and what you feel like doing or would rather be doing, and embrace what you believe will bring the most good to the most people in that moment.” Kelly gives us plenty of examples on what these Holy Moments look like in our everyday life.

Formed Study on Prayer

Take the time this lent, to learn how to deepen your relationship with God by working on this study to strengthen your relationship with God.

In the previous sessions we have been learning how reading and meditation on scripture are the first steps on the ladder of prayer. They are the stepping stones for our conversation with

God in Oratio. Dr. Gray says that “Thus far on the ladder of prayer we have made full use of our minds and hearts in our encounter with God, but the final step of all efforts of our soul wait upon the Lord to receive His gift of Contemplatio.”

Session Five is Contemplatio: The Gaze of Love

This week Dr. Gray teaches: “Contemplation is most fully something we receive, rather than achieve, but we can prepare ourselves for it by drawing closer to God in love. As St. Gregory the Great said, “The greatness of contemplation can be given to none but those who love.”

After listening to this video it is inspiring me to learn that “St. Teresa of Avila experience of contemplation is brief initially but over the experience is elongated with the perseverance in prayer and the moral life.”

P ASTORAL P RIORITIES

An Act of Contrition by St. Gertrude O my most loving Father! in the bitterness

of the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Christ, Your Son, I now pour forth my complaint,

indignantly accusing myself that I have served You so unfaithfully during this day and have offended You, my most amiable and loving Father, by so many and so great

negligences. I grieve for them from my inmost heart, and strike my breast in the spirit of compunction, and say to You, O God! be merciful to me a sinner. And for all

the negligences whereby I have extinguished Your good and gentle Spirit within me, I offer You the sufferings and the

tears of Your beloved Son. I beseech You, in union with His most availing prayers, to grant me pardon of my sins, and to supply

all my defects. Deign to hear this, my prayer, through that love which held back

Your arm from taking vengeance, when Your only and most beloved Son, the object

of Your eternal and unspeakable love, was numbered with transgressors.

Amen.
