Rome Sweet Home is Next Saturday

I am looking forward to another great Rome Sweet Home Italian Festival on September 14. I want to highlight a couple elements of the celebration and encourage you to use this as an opportunity to invite friends and family to experience the great community we have here at Christ the King.

In addition to the outdoor Mass, one of my favorite pieces of this event is the special communal Eucharistic Adoration Hour hosted by Wichita Adore Ministries. This will start at 3 pm in the church and will incorporate special music and lighting. It can be a compelling experience and may be a good way to introduce someone unfamiliar with Adoration to the profound opportunity to encounter Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

I also encourage you to use this entire event as an opportunity to share our faith. Coming to Mass or an Adoration hour might be a little intimidating to our non-Catholic friends or family or to those who have stopped practicing their Catholic faith. But, a lasagna dinner, live band and dancing, carnival for the kids, and fantastic fireworks are a lot more appealing. Inviting them to join us for some of these activities can build a personal connection to our parish and “grease the wheels” toward an openness to exploring the Catholic faith or picking up its practice again.

So as we head toward another great celebration this year, I encourage you to use Rome Sweet Home as an opportunity to grow in your own spiritual life and to introduce someone new to our parish to the great community we have at Christ the King.

Until next time, God bless you, Fr. Matthew

Biblical Wisdom

A high school freshman recently told me that she and many of her classmates are frustrated reading and understanding the Bible, which makes it even more difficult to understand and appreciate

the wealth of wisdom that we are told it contains. I think most of us can relate to this sentiment in some way. Even though most of us have been moved by some of the stories or key passages contained in scripture, much of the content of the bible could seem vague and choppy at best, or confounding at worst.

I have developed a great love for the bible through prayer, and I cherished opportunity I had to study in the Biblical Theology department at the Gregorian university as one of the greatest blessings I ever received. Through it all, I have learned that encountering the Lord in scripture requires first and foremost a love for delving deeper into the sacred writing.

I would encourage everyone, especially if you are looking for a way to engage family members and friends in conversations about the faith, to turn to sacred scripture for wisdom. You can even start with beautiful stories like Ruth, or iconic passages such as the sermon on the mount. For more “difficult” books and passages, I would advise looking to things such as the channel “The Bible Project” on youtube, or more resources on formed.com.

Until next time, Fr Zielinski

Ministry Space Expansions

Christ the King has outgrown our original office and meeting space needed to support the more than 50 ministries, parish community events, and growing faith formation and parish life programs.

Our Preparing the Way leadership committee explored many possibilities and space configurations. It was determined that renovating and adding the spaces described below allows for the most accessible, efficient, and cost-effective solution possible. It truly positions us to support and expand our ministries and provide increased opportunities for fellowship.

xConversion of Yadrich Hall to offices and ministry space xAddition of a new Parish Hall

xExpansion of Church Foyer Steward for Giving

“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” ~2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Prayer Works

Please continue to pray the “Preparing the Way” Campaign Prayer.

If you have questions; send an email to campaign@ctktopeka.org or you may call the parish office at 785-273-0710.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

On September 14th, Catholics around the world will celebrate The Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The cross is a sign of suffering, but Christ’s love gives it a new meaning--a sign of victory. Simply put, it is a sign of God. Loyola Press states that “We often make the Sign of the Cross over ourselves. We make it before prayer to help fix our minds and hearts on God. We make it after prayer, hoping to stay close to God. In trials and temptations, the cross is a sign of strength and protection. The cross is the sign of the fullness of life that is ours. Let us make the Sign of the Cross and realize we bring our whole selves to God - our minds, souls, bodies, wills, thoughts, hearts—everything we are and will become.”

O cross, you are the glorious sign of our victory.

Through your power may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.

“The more you need it the less you want it” ~ Dr. Scott Hahn This talk can be found on Formed.org. Start your

free account with a email address and this code:

91366d. In this particular audio Dr. Hahn examines some of the most widely held objections to confession and explains how and why they have arisen. This presentation will show you how to use the Bible to defend the truth of Catholic teaching and is a great tool to help you share our faith with others. It is a great audio for Confirmation sponsors, parents of children learning about confession and everyday Catholics with everyday questions. Check

it out and maybe find some answers. Here is a short review of this audio found on Formed.org. It rates the presentation as 5 Stars.

“…I thought I was doing fine going to confession twice a year and I have started going monthly and feel such a difference. Your comment of taking better care of your divine health really hit me because I am so totally focused on my physical health and yet there is so much more I can do to nourish my divine health…..”

Take some time and see for yourself. It may be just the change you need today.

A Family Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Oh most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we come to you as a family and consecrate ourselves to Your Sacred Heart. Protect us through Your Most Precious Blood and keep us pure and holy.

Oh Dear Jesus, we are so far away from Your most pure and Sacred Heart. As a family we need Your help. Heal all the quarrels that exist in our family due to our unforgiveness and lack of love for You. Heal our unbelieving and unconverted hearts and lead us to Your Sacred Heart with love. Unite us as a family and remove all stain of sinfulness from our souls. Help us to be a prayerful and loving family, so that through our example we may lead other souls to Your Most Sacred Heart.

We give You our hearts Dearest Jesus, and consecrate our family through the fourth generation.

Through the prayers of our Dearest Mother Mary, may we live this consecration every day of our lives.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Amen.

A Prayer for our Military:

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our goal is to provide prayer support and recognition for the men and women of the Christ the King

community who are serving on active duty in the United States Armed Forces. If you have a family member or close friend serving on active duty who could use our community’s prayer support for their health, well being and safe return, call the parish office, 785-273-0710. HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED SINGING IN THE CHOIR OR PLAYING HAND BELLS?

The parish choir sings twice each month at the 9 am Mass as well as for Christmas and Holy Week. We always welcome new voices to join our ranks! And the parish handbell choir offers music at least once each month as well as for Christmas and Holy Week, and we are in need of at least one bell ringer (the more the merrier).

Rehearsals are Thursdays (handbells at 6:15 pm, choir at 7:15 pm). Prayerfully consider this opportunity to join ranks with some really nice folks who love to serve the Lord and his people at Mass. Contact Michael Podrebarac (mpodrebarac@ctktopeka.org), parish music director, for more information or to get involved.

The theme of the September School of Faith series is Holy Relationships.
