From the Desk of Father John Nickolai

I have some words of thanks to begin with this week.

First, our quilters presented me with a gift of $2,500 for the parish general fund, from the proceeds of raffling their beautiful quilts. Thank you quilters for your work and your generosity.

Secondly, an individual parishioner gave a substantial gift in last Sunday’s collection. I extend my thanks to that person, and to all who have made sacrificial gifts to sustain the mission of the Church here at St. Rose. Please remember to consider your parish when making wills, when taking required distributions, and the like.

This week includes one of the most ancient feasts in the Church’s calendar: on February 22, we celebrate “The Chair of Peter,” an observance for which there is evidence as early as the year 354. Of course it’s not so much the literal chair that’s important, but the fact that St. Peter presided before the assembly there, exercising from there the office entrusted to him by Christ. The ancient formula describing this relic is “ubi prius sedit sanctus Petrus,” “where first sat blessed Peter.”

An interesting article in the Catholic Encyclopedia on this subject describes some of the evidence that indicates such a relic has indeed been preserved from ancient times. Tertullian, for instance, who wrote around 200, says, “Visit the Apostolic churches in which the very chairs of the Apostles still preside in their places. If you are near Italy, there is Rome.”

In the 1600s the chair was encased in a huge bronze reliquary designed by Bernini ± this is the picture you will likely find if you look up a picture of “St. Peter’s Chair.” But in 1867 the reliquary was opened and the chair photographed. The carrying rings set in its sides suggest it is a “sedes gestatoria,”

or “carryingchair,” of the kind commonly used in ancient Rome. Thus, the article concludes, “there is no reason for doubting the genuineness of the relic preserved at the Vatican.”

In your charity, please pray for the repose of the soul(s) of:

Barbara Clasby and Glenn Flavin

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual

light shine upon them.

Eucharistic Adoration

Have you ever wondered how weekly adoration can

benefit you? Following are some of the benefits: Every Holy Hour we make so pleases the Heart of Jesus that it is recorded in Heaven and retold for all eternity. (Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta). The spiritual lives of our families are strengthened by our Holy Hour. ( Saint John Paul ll) By being faithful to a Holy Hour of Adoration you can teach by example.

The young should be taught the

value of Eucharistic Adoration. (Saint John Paul ll) As busy as Mother Teresa’s schedule of working among the poor kept her, she started every day with Jesus in a Holy Hour of Adoration. Do you have time to schedule an extra hour a week with our Lord?

WE HAVE ONE OPEN HOUR 1PM ON FRIDAY’S.

Call us Millie 8377938 or Blanche 8372652.

You are always welcome to come and pray anytime The Parish Office will be

closed on Monday, February 21st in honor of

President’s Day!

Treating Chapped Lips

Dry lips can be uncomfortable and may lead to

cracks that are painful. Your lips only have a thin surface layer of skin, so they are more likely to dry out than the rest of your face. You lose up to 10 times more moisture through your lips than elsewhere on your face.

Here are some inexpensive ways to heal those cracked, chapped lips by using everyday skin care products.

There are several things that can cause chapped lips but most of the time it is due to dryness.

Dryness is generally caused by outdoor elements such as wind and sun. Occasionally there are more serious causes for persistent chapped lips including:

Sun damage that is precancerous Allergies

Inflammatory skin disease These tips will help both treat and prevent chapped lips:

Hydration: cracked lips can be a sign that you are not drinking enough water

Use lip products with SPF (sun protection factor)

Don’t liplick: often we lick our lips because they feel dry but the saliva actually makes the condition worse. As saliva evaporates, it dehydrates your lips more. Saliva also contains acid that breaks down food but is irritating to the skin.

Don’t exfoliate: the skin replaces its old cells at the right time. Exfoliation makes dry lips more

uncomfortable and could lead to infection.

It is important to choose the right chapped lip product. Your best choice is a basic lip balm with either petroleum base or paraffin base. It should keep the lips moist, protect from the elements and help to heal them.

Avoid using the following:

Antibiotic ointments

Zinc oxide (it helps protect from the sun but won’t heal)

Hydrocortisone ± this steroid cream can cause a problem with thinning of the skin around the mouth and cause an acnelike condition.

If your chapped lips don’t heal with lip balm you should see a dermatologist to see if a medical condition is the root problem.

The St. Rose Philippine Duchesne

Social Justice Council presents:

“Did You Know…?”

On November 26, 2007, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted, without reference to a Main Committee, a resolution proclaiming February 20 as the World Day of Social Justice. The pursuit of social justice for all is at the core of the United Nations global mission to promote development and human dignity.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH,

SECOND EDITION ARTICLE 3 SOCIAL JUSTICE

1928 Society ensures social justice when it provides the conditions that allow associations or individuals to obtain what is their due, according to their nature and their vocation. Social justice is linked to the common good and the exercise of authority.

I. RESPECT FOR THE HUMAN PERSON

II. EQUALITY AND DIFFERENCES AMONG MEN

1934Created in the image of the one God and equally

endowed with rational souls, all men have the same nature and the same origin. Redeemed by the sacrifice of Christ, all are called to participate in the same divine beatitude: all therefore enjoy an equal dignity.

1935The equality of men rests essentially on their

dignity as persons and the rights that flow from it:

Every form of social or cultural discrimination in

fundamental personal rights on the grounds of sex, race,

color, social conditions, language, or religion must be

curbed and eradicated as incompatible with God's

design.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 11

LITURGY OF THE WORD

Penitential Act (Confiteor)

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (strike breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary everVirgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;

you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, (Bow) who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, (End Bow) suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Preparation of Gifts (Response)

People: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Invitation to Communion

Priest: Behold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb.
