Getting it Right Special: Tenses
Content and aims
Have English tenses given you the occasional headache? Do you remember rules from school that don’t seem to add up? Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it may look – just different from German. Let’s discover how grammar relates to the real world when we talk about now, then and later in English:
• Which of the following could an Austrian civil servant say about herself and her job?
(2 correct answers)
− I’m coming from Austria.
− I come from Austria.
− I’m working at the Ministry of Finance.

• In which situations could you say the following? (All 6 are correct.)
− Did you meet the President? vs. Have you met the President?
− What have you been doing? vs. What have you done?
− We were talking about you. vs. We talked about you.
• How would you talk about your plans for tomorrow evening? (1 correct answer)
