The squirrel
European squirrels live in trees. They are usually red or brown, but you can also sometimes see grey ones. Squirrels look for food during the daytime. They love nuts and can open them in a few seconds. They also like vegetables or birds’ eggs. If they find extra food, they hide it in the ground or in a tree for the
winter. Squirrels climb down to the ground if they have to look for food.
But most of the time they stay in the trees – their favourite place.
They are active in the early mornings and late afternoons. In hot weather they stay in their nests at midday. Squirrels have five to seven babies, usually twice a year.
New baby squirrels have no hair and are blind for the first 30 days. However, only one baby in four survives (= überleben) to the age of one.
Red squirrels have few natural enemies (= natürliche Feinde). Cats and some wild animals often kill the young ones. And some of the bigger birds are dangerous, too. The worst enemies are people: they cut down trees everywhere so that the squirrels lose their homes.

The hedgehog
There are about 14 species (= Arten) of hedgehogs. Some have hair, others have hard spines (= Stacheln). An adult hedgehog is about 25 centimetres long and weighs about two kilogrammes.
In the wild hedgehogs can live for five years. They sleep all
winter so they must eat enough in summer and autumn to survive (= überleben) until spring.
European hedgehogs look for food at night. They go from garden to garden – often three kilometres in one night.
They like fruit or vegetables, but their favourite foods are insects, birds’ eggs or small birds. When the sun comes out, the hedgehog goes back to its nest and sleeps until it is dark again.
Hedgehogs roll themselves up to protect themselves from their enemies, for example foxes, birds and other wild animals. However, their biggest enemies are people: cars often hit hedgehogs or they die when people work in the garden.

Methode
Die grundlegende Arbeitsweise bei diesem Thema ist der Dreischritt Ich – Du – Wir. Auf diese Weise erarbeiten die Schüler Themen selbstständig und erweitern ihre soziale Kompetenz, indem sie mit einem Partner gemeinsam an einem Lösungsweg arbeiten.
Think-Phase: Die Schüler machen sich eigenständig mit dem Thema vertraut, stellen Bezüge zu ihrem Vorwissen her und entwickeln erste Ideen.
Pair-Phase: Gemeinsam mit einem Partner (i. d. R. Banknachbar) folgt der Austausch über
Gehörtes / Gelesenes oder Gesehenes. Gemeinsam arbeiten sie an ihren Ergebnissen / Lösungen.
Share-Phase: Die Resultate werden dem Plenum präsentiert und gegebenenfalls diskutiert.
Hinweise / Tipps
Bei dem vorgeschlagenen Dreischritt Think – Pair – Share kann eine weitere Phase zwischen- geschoben werden: die Square-Phase. Diese Phase geht der Share-Phase bzw. der Präsentation im Plenum voraus. Besonders für unsichere Gruppen / Teams eignet sich diese Phase, da Schüler so die Möglichkeit haben, ihre Ergebnisse zunächst in Kleingruppen (Vierergruppen) vorzustellen, bevor sie diese vor der Klasse präsentieren.
Hierbei kann der Lehrer die Partnerkonstellationen im Vorhinein bestimmen oder so verfahren:
Sobald ein Partnerpaar mit den gesamten Aufgaben fertig ist, steht es auf und positioniert sich für andere sichtbar an einer vorher abgesprochenen Stelle im Klassenraum, um zu signalisieren, dass es fertig ist. Das nächste Paar, das seine Arbeit beendet hat, holt es ab. Zu viert suchen sie sich einen freien Platz im Klassenraum und arbeiten gemeinsam weiter.
