14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 4, 2021
Pastor’s Ponderings…
Dear Saint Joseph and All Saints Parishioners:
Across our country, people will be firing up the BBQ, inviting friends over, and celebrating the freedom we enjoy as a country this weekend. As Catholic Americans, our understanding of freedom does not come from the Declaration of Independence or any legal decision. We know that human freedom is rooted in our human dignity and is rightly recognized in our country’s founding docu- ments as an “inalienable” right. When St. John Paul II came to the United States on one of his pastoral visits, he spoke of this nature of freedom in the context of the American experiment: “America has always wanted to be a land of the free. Today, the challenge facing America is to find freedom’s fulfillment in the truth: the truth that is intrinsic to human life created in God’s image and likeness, the truth that is written on the human heart, the truth that can be known by reason and can therefore form the basis of a profound and universal dialogue among people about the direction they must give to their lives and their activities.”
St. John Paul delivers the most memorable line of this homily: “Every generation of Americans needs to know that freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.” Our God-given freedom is a gift, given without cost or being earned. But that does not mean there are not responsibilities attached to this gift. I am free for a purpose, for a reason. That purpose is so that I can choose what is right and so that I can conform my life to the truth
— the truths of the natural law and the truths God has revealed in Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church.
Peace,
Father Ryan

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH JULY 4, 2021 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading:
But you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD! And whether they heed or resist—for they are a rebellious house—they shall know that a prophet has been among them. (Ez 2:4-5) Psalm:
Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy. (Ps 123)
Second Reading:
I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. (2 Cor 12:9)
Gospel:
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” (Mk 6:4)
REFLECT
First Reading:
Today’s reading is an excerpt from the prophetic call Ezekiel received while in exile in Babylon (Ez 1:1-3:27) The Lord commissioned Ezekiel to go and confront the “rebellious house” of Israel.
How do you imagine the Israelites received Ezeki- el’s message?
Second Reading:
Paul learned that the “thorn in his flesh” taught him to be humble and dependent upon God’s grace alone. Where do you see God’s grace most present in your life?
Gospel:
Jesus was “amazed” at the lack of faith his fellow Nazareans had in him, suggesting Jesus ex- pected a different response. Why do you think the villagers of Nazareth “took offense” at Jesus?
Calling All Married Couples!
The Diocese of Providence is hosting the annual Wedding Anniversary Celebration Mass on Sunday September 26, 2021 at 1:00 PM in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence. Any couple celebrating their 25th,
40th, 50th, or over 50 year anniversary in 2021, and who are married according to the norms of the Catholic Church, are invited to attend. Couples wishing to attend should contact Terry at Saint Joseph’s (766-0626) or
Debbie at All Saints (762-1100) by August 27th to register.
Permanent Diaconate Program
Bishop Tobin has authorized the recruitment and formation of a new class of Permanent Deacons for the Diocese of Providence. Deacons are men who love God and His Church and feel called to serve in a more committed way. The role of the deacon is to assist the bishops and priests and to
proclaim by his life the Church’s call to serve the needs of others. The formation process is a four
year program of academic instruction, spiritual development, human development and practical pastoral experience. Upon completion, each man
is prepared for ordination and assignment to serve as a deacon in parishes and other ministerial situations: proclaiming the Gospel, assisting in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy
and other rites of the Church and serving in ministries of charity and catechetics.
If interested contact Father Ryan at the Rectory Office or Deacon Noel Edsall, Director of Permanent Deacons at 401-278-4604 or
