= Act of Spiritual Communion = by Saint Alphonsus Liguori

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things and I desire Thee in my soul. Since I cannot now

receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though thou wert already there, I embrace Thee and unite myself wholly to Thee; permit not that I should ever be

separated from Thee. Amen.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 31, 2021

Dear Saint Joseph and All Saints Parishioners:

Imagine eating the sun—and imagine you could do it without perishing. What would happen?

You would receive into your body the source of light and warmth. You would have within you all the light and heat that you could possibly ever need or want. No more heating bills, no more lightbulbs, no more winter trips to warmer climates.

Last week I was praying with some of the writings of Saint Ephrem the Syrian and I came across a line that the Lord then placed on my heart for a few days afterward: “He who eats it [The Eucharist] eats fire and Spirit.” We call Jesus Christ the “Sun of Justice” and each time we consume him in the Eucharist, we consume Divine Fire—a fire far more potent in the range and reach of its possible spiritual effects than any physical fire. The Divine Fire of the Eucharist purifies us and burns away our imperfections, it illuminates the darkness of our lives with Divine Grace and Holy Wisdom, it unites us more closely to Almighty God and attunes our ears to His voice. The Holy Eucharist does within and upon the soul what fire does within and upon combustible matter, transforming that matter into itself.

We must therefore cling heartily and happily to our Eucharistic Lord. We do not come to church on Sunday to feel good, to see our friends, or to get free coffee and donuts after Mass! The

Eucharist is the source, center, and summit of the Christian life, the be-all and end-all of being a follower of Jesus. We come to Mass to be

“eucharisticized” and transformed into what we eat—God himself! We come to Church to become holy by eating (literally “gnawing” in Greek) on the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the

Eucharist. We come to eat fire and Spirit!

Peace, Father Ryan

Our Bulletin is Online

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 31, 2021

First Reading: I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him. (Dt 18)

Psalm: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. (Ps 95)

Second Reading: An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit.

(1 Cor 7:34)

Gospel: The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. (Mk 1:22)

REFLECT

First Reading: Moses taught the Israelites that God would send prophets to assist them in knowing His will. Why do you think people so often reject the prophetic message?

Second Reading: Paul speaks of the inevitability of anxiety in life. How does your faith assist you in handling what makes you anxious?

Gospel: In the story of the healing of a

demon-possessed man, Mark reports how the demons knew Jesus’ true identity as “the Holy One of God.” What does this reveal about the unseen order?

A Gentle Reminder of our Covid-19 Precautions

i When entering the church, please enter by the front doors, sanitize your hands, and drop off your offertory donation.

i Please wear a mask at all times when in the church.

i During these times, the Sign of Peace is omitted. Please do not offer one another the Sign of Peace.

i Please keep your mask on in the Communion line until you have said, “Amen.” Then you may remove your mask, consume the Sacred Host, re-secure your mask and return to your pew.

i Please maintain a 6 foot distance in the Communion line.

i Those who wish to receive Holy Communion on the tongue should only come to the priest’s line and should come up last.

i Please do not leave Mass early. Remain in your pew until the closing song has ended.

Those who are in the rear of the church should exit first and those in the front of the church exit last.

Calling All Men!!!

The Men of St. Joseph is a Catholic group for men who wish to grow in their relationship with God and

claim their role as the spiritual leaders of their families. The next meeting will be February 4th @ 6:30 pm. For more information, contact Dennis Blanchette at

dennis_blanchette@yahoo.com.

Girl Scout Cookie Time It’s officially girl scout cookie

season and the troop of our parish will be selling cookies

in the parking lot after all masses on the weekend of

February 6th and 7th.

BLESSING of the THROATS

This Wednesday, Feb. 3rd is the Feast of St.

Blaise. Fr. Ryan will bless throats immediately after the 7:30 am Mass. According to an ancient Church tradition, throats have been

blessed on this day for centuries, using the candles blessed the day prior on the Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas). Come and get your throat blessed during this flu season!

You’ll be glad you did.

Donor(s) Needed!

Many of you have noticed that our Paschal Candle Stand has become warped over the years and the Easter Candle no longer stands up straight. A new Paschal Candle stand will cost about $2,500. If you

are interested in donating toward the new stand, please see Father Ryan.
