Christmas

What a wonderful time Christmas is! Do you know how the British celebrate (feiern) Christmas?

To find out more about Christmas traditions in the UK, start reading at number 1.

1

In Germany we celebrate Christmas on 24th December. In Great Britain and Northern Ireland people call this day Christmas Eve. They celebrate Christmas on 25th December. That’s when Father Christmas comes.

2

Did you know that there are shops which only sell cards? Thousands of cards for any occasion ( Gelegenheit). There’s something else British people buy for Christmas – Christmas crackers.

3

This is Saint Nicholas. We are looking for Father Christmas.

4

The fireplace is in the living room. Even if there is no chimney (Kamin) in the house, most people can find somewhere to hang their stockings. But some presents are too big. Father Christmas puts them under the Christmas tree.

5

Christmas pudding is made from ( bestehen aus) fruits and nuts (Nüsse).

British people put alcohol on it and light it on fire. After dinner everyone watches TV because the Queen gives a speech ( Rede halten).

6

These are biscuits. You can’t eat Christmas crackers.

7

This is a laptop. Most people watch the Queen’s speech on TV.

8

In the night between 24th and 25th December, Father Christmas comes and brings presents to the house. In other English-speaking countries people call him Santa Claus. He puts the presents into the stockings.

9

31st December is New Year’s Eve. It’s six days after Christmas.

10

In Great Britain and Northern Ireland most people have stockings for their presents. You can buy them in any size and colour. It’s a tradition to hang them up on the fireplace.

11

For Christmas dinner British people traditionally eat turkey. Look at the table – how nice it looks. When dinner is finished, it’s time for dessert:

Christmas pudding.

12

This looks like German pudding, but the English name is blancmange. Look for Christmas pudding again.

Christmas

What a wonderful time Christmas time is! Don’t you think so? All the nice decorations, the presents and the time you spend with your family. But do you know how the British celebrate (feiern) Christmas?

To find out more about Christmas traditions in the UK, start reading at number 1.

1 In Germany we celebrate Christmas on 24th December. In Great Britain and Northern Ireland this day is Christmas Eve. But people have to wait for their presents one day longer: they celebrate on 25th December. That’s when Father Christmas comes.

2 Did you know that in the UK there are shops which only sell cards? Thousands of cards for any occasion (Gelegenheit) – Christmas, birthday, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – and cards for brothers, sisters, grandmothers, grandfathers… It’s amazing! There’s something else British people buy for Christmas. They call them Christmas crackers.

3 This is Saint Nicholas. He is also important at Christmas time, but in the UK he is not as important as Father Christmas.

4 The fireplace is in the living room. Even if there is no chimney (Kamin) in the house, most people can find somewhere to put all the nice Christmas decorations. And the stockings, of course. But some presents are too big for the stockings, so Father Christ- mas puts them under the Christmas tree.

Write down some things which are too big for the stockings:

5 Christmas pudding is a dessert made from (bestehen aus) different kinds of fruits and nuts (Nüsse). The English flambé it; that means they put alcohol on it and light it on fire.

After Christmas dinner everyone watches TV because the Queen gives her Christmas speech (Rede halten).

6 These are biscuits. You cannot eat Christmas crackers.

7 This is a laptop. It might be possible to watch the speech there, but people traditionally watch it on TV.

8 In the night between 24th and 25th December Father Christmas comes to every house and brings the presents. In other English-speaking countries people don’t call him Father Christmas, but Santa Claus; that’s his name in the USA, for example. He puts the presents in the stockings.

9 31st December is New Year’s Eve. It’s six days after Christmas.
