I n t e r e s t i n water r e s o u r c e s s y s t e m s h a s been a c r i t i c a l p a r t o f r e s o u r c e s and environlnent r e l a t e d r e s e a r c h a t I I A S A s i n c e i t s

i n c e p t i o n . A s c o u n t r i e s u n d e r t a k e more and l a r g e r p r o j e c t s t o meet t h e i r d a t e r u s e , t h e p h y s i c a l l i m i t a t i o n s of n a t u r a l w a t e r s u p p l i e s a r e becoining a p p a r e n t . T h i s i n t u r n r e q u i r e s an i n c r e a s e i n t n e d e g r e e of d e t a i l and s o p h i s t i c a t i o n of t h e a n a l y s i s , i n - c l u d i n g economic, s o c i a l , and e n v i r o n ~ n e n t a l e v a l u a t i o n of development a l t e r n a t i v e s a i d e d by a p p l i c a t i o n of m a t h e m a t i c a l i n o d e l l i n j t e c h n i q u e s , t o g e n e r a t e i n ~ u t f o r p l a n n i n g , d e s i g n , and o p e r a t i o n a l d e c i s i o n s .

I n t n e y e a r s 1976 and 1977 IIASA i n i t i a t e d a c o n c e n t r a t e d r e s e a r c h e f f o r t f o c u s i n g on nod el ling and f o r e c a s t i n g of w a t e r demands. Our i n t e r e s t i n t h i s t o p i c d e r i v e s from t h e g e n 2 r a l l y a c c e p t e d r e a l i z a t i o n t h a t t h e s e fundamental a s s e c t s of water r e s o u r c e s management have n o t been g i v e n d u s c o n s i d e r a t i o n i n t h e p a s t .

T h i s r e p o r t , t h e s e v e n t h i n t h e I I A S A water denand s e r i e s , c o n s i s t s of a s e l e c t e d a n n o t a t e d b i b l i o g r a p h y on water denand l i t e r a t u r e which came a b o u t a s a r e s u l t of I I A S A ' s s t u d y on water demands.
