different birth parameters
The goal of this submitted work was to present the correlation between development and the passive immunization of the newborn piglets through the mothers’ milk.
Blood serums from 400 piglets from 20 breeding sows of the German Land Race and from each two litters consecutively were examined for the Ig concentration.
Blood samples were taken in the 12th, 18th and 24th hour as well as on the 3rd, 6th and 10th day post natum.
The weight of the piglets was taken at birth, after 24 hours and after 21, 42 and 63 days.
The quantitative determination of the immunoglobulins took place which the simple radial immunodiffusion in a modification according to KLOBASA (unpublished).
The Ig concentration on the first day was characterized by an absorption maximum at the examination time 12 hours post natum. The main portion was IgG with 78 %. In examinations from the third to the tenth day of life, the Ig concentration of IgG sank by 41 %, of IgA by 89 % and of IgM by 69 %.
The weight development of the piglets was continuos from 1.4 kg at birth to 18.9 kg on day 63. This means a gain of 278 g per life day.
A comparison of the Ig concentration among the piglets, that without any mechanical influence e.g. crushing, showed to the third day that values of the crushed piglets are higher in all globulin classes.
Between maximum concentrations of material immunoglobulins in the blood serum of the piglets (12 hours post natum) and the weight development, there was a certain relationship after 24 hours as well as until the 21st day(IgG) and until the 63rd day (IgA).
The weight at birth had no significant influence on the concentrations of IgG, IgA, and IgM in the blood serum of the piglets.
Between the birth order and the Ig concentration at the time of maximum absorption, a weak significant influence was shown. The highest concentrations of the three immunoglobulin classes were found in piglets that were born about in the middle of the birth process as 4 - 6.
Regarding the birth order and weight development of the piglets, it was noticed that those in the last group (10 piglets and following) born on the 21st day, had an average of 0.8 kg and on the 63rd day, 1.9 kg less body weight than those born first. Otherwise there was no meaningful difference at the times of measurement.
Significant relationships between size of litter and Ig concentration do not appear for IgG.
For IgA there was a weak significance 12, 18 and 24 hours as well as 6 days and for IgM 18 hours as well as 3 days post natum.
An influence of the size of litter on the development of the piglet weight was first clearly present in litters with over 12 piglets. The average weight at birth was about 200 g lower than for litters with up to 11 piglets. The largest difference of 2.5 kg was on the 42nd life day.
Parity proved itself for concentrations of the three immunoglobulins in blood serum at all measurement times with exception of IgM as a significant factor on the 10th day post natum.
It had influence on the development of the body weight of the piglets. The lowest birth weight appeared in litters of sows that had between 1 and 7 to 9 piglets.
