Teaching position Decorative Arts (Washington DC)
The Masters Program in the History of Decorative Arts, offered jointly by Parsons School of Design and the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, seeks an adjunct faculty member to teach Survey of European Decorative Arts, 1500-1800 in the fall 2004 semester. There are two sections of approximately 15 students (30 students total), each of which meets once a week for three hours at a time. The class schedule is Wednesday, 4-7, and Friday 1-4. The faculty member will be assigned a Teaching Assistant who will lead discussion groups weekly.
This graduate program is housed within the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and we have the opportunity to teach using the collections.
Faculty are encouraged to have the students write papers on objects in the collection, and possibly to lecture to students in one of the
curatorial departments. For example, faculty could use maiolica in storage here to teach about Renaissance ceramics.
The semester is 15 weeks, September 7th-December 23rd. Faculty may invite two guest lecturers to the class (and we will provide an
honorarium for their payment). There is a mid-term and final, which leaves 11 lectures to prepare. The salary for teaching the two sections is approximately $8,250-$8,750, depending on experience and
qualifications.
Survey faculty will have the opportunity to offer a graduate seminar in the spring - on a topic of your choosing.
MA in Art History or in the History of Decorative Arts required.
