October Health Talk:

All About Nutrition

Come join Imani Simmons with Outcomes as she discusses the latest research in nutrition from Harvard University. Some of their suggestions are what you already know, but some may surprise you! Do you know the U.S. no longer uses a food pyramid and do you know what they are using instead? What foods help fight disease and increase energy? This will be a lively presentation followed with an interactive discussion.

This will take place on October 28th at 1:45 p.m. so

make sure to mark your calendar, because you won’t

want to miss this health talk.

Creative Corner

Our Maple Ridge Talent scouts have spotted a couple residents with unique hobbies. One of our newer residents,

Raymond, makes model trees in his spare time. He says it’s really quite simple to make, all you need are some bendable wires and pliers to twist them all together. He occasionally will bead the branches so they are full of leaves. If you ever want to look at his collection, he always welcomes those that are interested. Raymond first started fiddling with wire to calm his nerves and it soon turned into a tree making hobby; he’ll even stop on the side of the road to take a picture of a tree for inspiration.

Another talented resident is Lucille. She hand- makes Christmas ornaments for her children and grandchildren. She starts making an ornament about

four months before she plans on giving it to someone.

Since these are so tedious and time-consuming, she only gives them for special reasons, such as a grandson getting married or an anniversary.

Maple Ridge Patriots Day

To honor all the lives that were lost on 9/11, Maple Ridge hosted our first annual balloon release. A local corporal from Camp Mabry Army Base opened the ceremony with a prayer.

Following the prayer our assistant managers Brook and Dennis sang a beautiful rendition of

“God Bless America.” The honor guard then did a flag presentation before we headed outside to release the balloons. When the balloons released there was a moment of silence as we watched them float away. It was quite a touching

ceremony that really warmed the heart. The Turners standing with

10 Signs You’re Too Old for Trick-

or-Treating

• You get out of breath from knocking on the door.

• You need to ask someone to chew your candy for you.

• You ask for high-fiber candy.

• When someone drops a candy bar in your bag, it makes you lose your balance and you fall over.

• People say, “Great Keith Richards Mask!” except you’re not wearing a mask.

• When the door opens, you say, “Trick or ...” and then you can’t remember the rest.

• By the end of the night you have a trick-or-treat bag full of restraining orders.

• You have to carefully choose your costume so as not to dislodge your hairpiece.

• You’re the only Power Ranger that requires a walker.

• You have to work hard to avoid going to houses where your exes live.

Trick-or-treating is hard work. So instead of us going door-to-door, Maple Ridge is going to host a safe place for kids to come and trick-or-treat on Halloween night.

Put on your best costume and help us pass out candy to local children. Please donate candy to Emily, anything to help ensure we don’t run out of candy!

How to Avoid Scamming

Maple Ridge would like to thank the Cedar Park Police Department for coming and giving a talk on scamming and how to avoid it. Officer Pondo and his partner were extremely knowledgeable. They both gave us great advice on how to avoid falling into the scammer’s trap.

Tip 1: If you receive a call from an unknown number, do not answer it. Let this call go to voicemail, if they know you and are authentic they will leave you a message or reach out to you another way.

Tip 2: Do not give any money over the phone. There are many people

calling asking for donations, to fill green dot cards to collect money winnings, or to post bail money for loved ones in jail.

These are not always legitimate.

Always ask for

a callback number, verify the story given to you and then proceed.

Tip 3: If the IRS is calling and asking for your

information like your social security number, do not give them this information. The IRS will not likely call you on the phone or ask for your personal information.

Tip 4: If you are sent a check and are unsure where it came from or it seems too good to be true, verify it’s real before cashing it. If it is a phony check you could face charges and end up having to repay the amount cashed.

A word of advice: If it seems like it’s too good to be true, it most likely is. If you feel like you are getting overwhelmed with scammer calls visit donotcall.gov to register your phone for a do not call list.

Fun Halloween Facts!

• Did you know? Although it is unknown precisely when and where the phrase

“trick or treat” was coined, the custom had been firmly established in American popular culture by 1951, when trick-or- treating was depicted in the Peanuts comic strip. In 1952, Disney produced a cartoon called “Trick or Treat” featuring Donald Duck and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. (history.com)

• The night before Halloween, young children in Des Moines, Iowa, hit the streets for Beggars’ Night. According to an article in the Des Moines Register, the event began around 1938 as a way to prevent vandalism and give younger children a safer way to enjoy Halloween.

Beggars’ Night is very similar to regular trick-or-treating, except kids are required to tell a joke, poem, or perform a “trick”

for a treat. The best part? The jokes are notoriously groan-worthy like, “If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?” (USA Today)

• National Magic Day or Houdini Day:

Houdini, the world’s most famous magician and escape artist, could not escape death. He died on Halloween in 1926. The anniversary of his death is now observed as National Magic Day.
