BOOK BUZZ

Bonnie Easton

Let’s start February off with a little romance.

Suzanne O’Leary wrote three books in 2021 for her Starlight Cottage series set on the west coast of Ireland.

Book 1 is The Lost Girls of Ireland. Lydia Butler and her daughter, Sunny, move to a cottage she inherited from her great aunt in the small village of Sandy Cove. Her husband had been engaging in some shady business deals before his sudden death and left her penniless. Of course, there is the charming American artist who lives next door to offer comfort.

Book 2 is The Lost Secret of Ireland that tells the story of Ella Caron and her mother’s friend, Lucille. Ella is grieving her mother’s death and moves from Paris to find peace and quiet in a cottage by the sea in Sandy Cove.

Lucille arrives to keep her company and her son, Rory, follows with a plan to take Lucille to live with him. A romance blossoms between Ella and Rory.

Book 3 is The Lost Promise of Ireland that introduces us to Maggie who entangles herself in a love triangle. When she comes to Sandy Cove, she rekindles a friendship with her friend, Sorcha, and her handsome cousin, Brian, but the American boy she met one summer there and exchanged letters with has also returned. Which one is destined to be her true love?

The Pages by Irish author Hugo Hamilton has an unusual point-of-view. The narrator is a book, a battered first edition of the 1924 novel Rebellion written by Austrian Jewish author Joseph Roth. Nazis almost destroyed it in one of their book burnings in Berlin. An artist inherits the book from her father and sets out to discover the meaning of a cryptic map it contains.

Henry O’Toole escapes the Irish famine in 1848 and arrives in America to find anti-Irish prejudice in A More Perfect Union by Tammye Huf. He changes his name to Henry Taylor and moves to Virginia to find work as a traveling blacksmith. There, he falls in love with Sarah, a black slave on the Jubilee Plantation, but their interracial love is illegal. When other slaves discover their relationship, they snub and bully her. Henry sees how slave owners treat their slaves and refuses to make any more chains for the masters. The story is based on the life of Huf’s great great grandparents.
