NKLSON GLÜBCK.INTRODUCTION TO SECOND EDITION.
It is a source of considerable gratification to learn that the Verlag Alfred Topelmann is issuing a second edition of my book „Das Wort hcsed . . . " , which first appeared under the same imprimatur over a long generation ago. I have had occasion during the intervening years to re- examine it and have found no reason to change its methodological ap- proach or its final conclusions.
The hesed idea was not born full blown. It evolved with logical and dynamic consequence in connection with the development and deepen- ing of the socially equitable and divinely based relationship of man to man and to God and especially in the refinement of the covenant relationship of the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God.
This initial study was supposed to be the beginning of a systematic Ideengeschidite of the Bible.
The whole gamut of Biblical concepts from to'ebab to qedushah, that is, from abomination to holiness and from mishpat to tsedaqah and rahimim, that is, from the canon of judgement to the rule of righteous- ness and the restraint of mercy, and others too, was supposed to have been included in such a book, extending from their first appearance to their fullest efflorescence in the records of Sacred Writ. Each idea was to have been followed from its initial beginning to its ultimate bloom, with meticulous attention to every nuance of its natural and in- evitable changes.
I never continued with that project, because I passed over soon from
the exploration of Biblical ideas to a life long engagement in Biblical
archaeology. For many years now, the latter has been the happy and
exciting burden of my scientific pursuits both in explorations and ex- cavations in Biblical lands and in the publication and evaluation of the results attained.
In both aspects of my endeavors, I have never ceased to marvel at the unfolding miracle of man's increasing comprehension of the ways and words of God.
How happy I am therefore to welcome the reprinting of this very first scientific publication of mine, which was published in 1927 by the Verlag von Alfred Töpelmann in Giessen as number 47 of the Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft. I think back to the late, lamented Professors Willi Staerk and Hugo Gressmann, who encouraged me to undertake and complete this study. In fond recollec- tion of them, I dedicate this second edition to their memories.

Es gewährt mir große Genugtuung, daß der Verlag Alfred Töpel- mann eine zweite Auflage meines Buches „Das Wort hesed . . . " heraus- bringt. Die erste Auflage erschien im selben Verlag vor mehr als 30 Jah- ren. Ich hatte während dieser Zeit Gelegenheit, den Text zu überprüfen und sehe keine Veranlassung zu Änderungen der darin geäußerten An- sichten und Ergebnisse.
Die hesed-Idce entstand nicht auf einmal in ihrer endgültigen Form.
Sie entwickelte sich mit ihren logischen und dynamischen Konsequenzen zugleich mit wachsender Einsicht in das gottgegebene soziale Verhältnis des Menschen zu seinem Nebenmenschen und zu Gott und besonders in die Läuterung dieses Verhältnisses durch den heiligen Bund, in dem die Menschen als Brüder unter einem göttlichen Vater erscheinen. Die Studie über die hesed-ldee sollte das erste Kapitel in einer systematischen Ideen- geschichte der Bibel werden.
Meine Absicht war, in solch einem Buche die ganze Entwicklung der biblischen Konzepte von to'ebah bis qedushah, von Sündhaftigkeit bis zur Heiligkeit, von misbpat bis thedaqah und rahamim, vom göttlichen Gebot bis zur Herrschaft der Gerechtigkeit, gemildert durch Gnade und viele andere, einzuschließen von ihrem ersten Auftauchen bis zur vollen
