graphen uicht nochmals wieder, sondern hat bloss die Bemerkung: „Der Zend ist wie er an don andern Orten sieh geschrieben findet" (vgl. p. 144 meiner Ausg.). In neueren Schriften der Parsen habe ich noch eine gute Anzahl von Stellen gesammelt, welche theils Avesla allein, theils Avesta und Zend zeigen, so dass ich, was den Gebrauch der beiden Wörter anbetrifft, wohl annehmen darf, dass meine früher ausgesprochene Ansicht keines weiteren
Beweises mehr bedürfe. — Was nun die Etymologie des Wortes Zend be¬
trifft , so glaube ich , dass dasselbe in der früheren Periode der Sprache zauti gelautet habe und von der Wurzel zan, wissen, herzuleiten sei, welehe dem skr. jnu entspricht und öfter vorkommt (Farg. VI. 94. Vlll. 5. 28. u. s. w.), sicb aueh noeb im neupers. erhalten bat. Zend ist daher etymologisch so viel als yviSais. Doch nicbt bloss der Etymologie, aucb der Sacbe nach wird zend dasselbe sein als yväiait; das letztere Wort bedeutet nämlich, wie Baur (die christliche Gnosis p. 85 ff.) gezeigt bat, die allegorische Auffassung des Textes, und diese Bedentung des Wortes ist sowobl dem Charakter des uns erhaltenen Zend als aucb der Tradition bei Masudi gemäss, welche Herr Dr. Chwolsohn mitgetheilt bat. (Man vgl. diese Ztsebr. Bd. VI. p. 408.)
Durch diese Etymologie erhalten wir auch einen passenden Uebergang von Zand zu Zandik , wodurch der frübere Anstoss beseitigt wird. 1st nämlich lenA = yv<3ais , so isV zeniW — yvioorixos und batte zuerst allerdings die scblimmu Nebenbedeutung nicht, welehe spater mit dem Worte verbunden wurde.

Durch gütige Mittbeilung des Herrn Murray-Mitchell in Bombay habe ieh Nachricht von einem wichtigen gegenwärtig in Bombay erscheinenden Werke erhalten, welches, bei der boben Bedeutung der altpersiseben Sprache und Literatur, aucb bei uns in Deutsehland mit Interesse begrüsst werden wird.
Ich gebe den Wortlaut des mir mitgetheilten Prospectus und füge bloss die Be¬

A dictionary of the Zand bas been long felt as a great desideratum by those prosecuting their studies with a view to store their minds witb Orienlal lore, and also by those willing to devote their leisure moments to s-itisfying their curiosity as to what their ancient predecessors in the Eust have bequea¬
thed to them in a language, wbicb is now almost obsolete, and which per¬
haps , if still neglected , will soon perish altogether witbout leaving behind alrace of its ever having been in existence. This state of matters bas led the writer of tbis prospectus to consider whether he could frame a dictionary of tbe Zand and Guzräti languages; bul be was not in the outset so sanguine a» to think even of ever having the good fortune to place it before the literary World. In the course of his preparation of this work , the author bas hud to surmount innumerable difficulties and be was obliged to inter¬
sperse therein upwards of a thousand Notes witb philological and etymolo¬
gical e.vplanations , so as to render the comparison of his humble opinion witb that of the Pursi priests and the continental Orientalists easy to his readers.
At a subsequent period , it was suggested to the author by some of l^is learned friends, that the introduction of English into the work would be a great improvement and enhance its utility and value considerably. He readily adopted their suggestion , and now purposes to publish bis book in two octavo Volumes comprising all the Zand words with their corresponding pronuncia¬
tions and meanings in English and Guzrati ; and the price he sets upon each copy is only Uupees 35 •), a sum which will hardly pay even tbo printing charges. The author looks for no remuneration for his labours , which he thinks will be amply repaid, should bis work be found, by the world at large, a useful addition as a book of references in the library of Orientalists, and a serviceable assistant to those who are desirous of studying tbe eastern literature.
A specimen of tbis work was duly laid before Government for its ap¬
probation und patronage ; and ut ils request il was carefully e.xamined by the learned Honorary President of the Bombay Branch Royal Asiatic Society, the Revd. John Wilson D, D., who commenced his report in tbe following terms:
„I bave carefully examined this specimen ; .ind I am happy lo be able to say , it exhibits more decided marks of genuine oriental scholarship , than 1 have observed for a long time in tbe Pursi community of this place."
A specimen of tbis work in English was laid before the meeting of tbu Bombay Branch of Royal Asiatic Soeiety of the 13lb of November last , and was also approved of by them. The writer of this prospectus requests a re¬

Contents of the work.
This work will be published in the two languages in two separate vo¬
lumes , viz: volume 1st in English, and volume 2nd in Guzruli — wilh the uriginal Zand words with their respective transcriptions and significations and purls of speech.
In this work upwurds of a thousand notes will be interspersed , wilh philological and etymological explanations, for the purpose of a coniparisou uf tbo author's bumble opinion wilh those of the Pnrsi priests aud continental Orientalists. Al the commencement of this work is a comparative table of the Zand alphabet witb tbose of tbo Persian , Peblivi , Hebrew , Cuneiform, Sanskrit, Gnzfati, Greek and Roman languages, in wbicb their arliculatiou is pointed oul in their respective classes.

Die deutscbe Uebersetzung des National-Epos der Finnen Knlewnln von Anton Schiefner ') ist ersebienen. — Auf iönnrot's Wörterbuch der Finni¬
schen Sprache wird man leider wobl nocb lange Zeit warten müssen ; sein öllenlliehes ürzllicbcs Amt nimmt fast seine ganze Zeit in Anspruch. In Er¬
wartung dieses vollsländigen Thesaurus fängt C. G. Borg mit nächstem Jahre ein kleines Lexicon der finnischen Sprache zu bearbeiten an, ähnlich seinem Schwedisch-Finnischen Wörterbuch, dessen erste Hälfte bereits vollendet ist, und dessen zweite Hälfte, din das Ganze ahschliessl, nächstens erscheinen wird. Doch wird auch jenes speciell für die Halewala berechnete kleinere Wörterbuch kaum unter 3 bis 4 Jahren in die Hände des Publicums kommen.
Indessen wird die Finnische Literatur-Gescllscliafl ein für die Scbulen bear¬
beitetes Lesehuch herausgeben , welches die fünf ersten Gesänge der Kalcwala mit Inhaltsverzeichniss , Wörterbuch und Erklärungen enthalten soll. — Der erste Band der Finnischen Sagen, ein sehr interessantes Werk, wird bald die Presse verlassen.
Kine ganze Literatur für sicb ist der literarische Nachlass Caslren's, an dessen Herausgabe hier und in Sl. Petersburg gearbeitet wird. Mit Staunen haben wir die Masse seiner Materialien geordnet. Die Samojedische Gram- mnlik , ein ungeheures Werk, wird von Anton Schiefner, unter Mitwirkung Sjogren's, aus dem Schwedischen ins Deutsche übersetzt und von der Peters¬
burger Akademie herausgegeben werden. Böhtlingk hat die Bearbeitung der rntnrtscAeti philologischen Materialien übernommen, und Schiefner wird wabr-
