Käsikirjad on Tartusse jõudnud eri aegadel.
Komplekt võimalikke õppevahendeid on mitmekesine. Silmatorkavalt palju on hilisantiigi proosatekste, terve rida nn pseudo-autoreid (Ps.-Aristoteles, Ps.-Dares Phrygius, Ps.- Seneca, Ps.-Hieronymus).
Käsikirjalise raamatu kaunistus lähtub tähekujust, see omakorda kirjatüübist.

The ninth calendar in the Tartu University Library calendar series, the one for 2010, introduces the public to one of the most beauti- ful pearls in the library’s collections – the ten-volume collection of medieval Latin parchment manuscripts. It is no exaggeration to say that each of the Tartu codices – even the most modest one – is aes- thetically unique, just as any medieval manuscript is, in principle, never repeated.
The manuscripts have reached Tartu at different times. As to their earlier history, a few marks about it can be found in the codices, but as a whole it is still rather obscure. Mscr 10 (breviary from about 1400) and Mscr 13 (commentary on Priscianus’ Latin grammar from the 12th (11th?) century) have been in the university library since the first decades of the 19th century. The rest were bought for the university in London in 1875 by Franz Rühl (1845–1916), a young Tartu professor of classical philology, whose passion was Latin palae- ography. He was educated as a historian at the universities of Jena and Berlin (one of his teachers was Theodor Mommsen), took his doctoral degree from the University of Marburg with a dissertation on Plutarch, and travelled for years before coming to Tartu in 1872.
Most of Rühl’s four years in Tartu before leaving for the University of Königsberg were spent on research trips. It is on one of these trips that the Tartu parchment codices were bought.
One can suppose that the purchase was due to Rühl’s intention to start a course in medieval palaeography in Tartu. The set of possible study aids is quite varied. There is a conspicuously large number of prose texts from the Late Antiquity, several so-called pseudo-authors (Pseudo-Aristotle, Pseudo-Dares Phrygius, Pseudo-Seneca, and Pseudo-Jerome). The codices date from the 13th to the 15th centuries and provide characteristic examples of late medieval scripts and book design without considerable repetitions.
The possibilities of medieval book design primarily depended on the writing material, the traditions of text division, and the inner logic of the development of script. Only after fulfilling the initial conditions did the artist or rubricator let his fantasy flow freely. Noble parch- ment, the main writing material in the Middle Ages, can be quite different depending on whether the skin comes from a sheep, goat, or calf, and the means used for processing it as well as the thorough- ness of processing also have their role. Manuscripts of Italian origin, written on sheepskin, are bright white, with soft and smooth surface, and thin leaves, which cause no obstacle to the movement of the pen – the script becomes more rounded, decorations appear in the mar- gins, and filigrees, even miniatures, appear by the initials (see March, April, May, and December). At the same time, the fur and the flesh side of the material can differ considerably in colour. In Northern Europe, calfskin was preferred: the parchment is darker, thicker, and stiffer, but the colour is more even on both sides (see February, Sep- tember, and October).
The traditions of text division aimed at facilitating the reading and use of the book. Possible decorations are to be found in typical places: the beginning and end of the text, headings and subheadings, initials, emphases in text, and the marking of thought pauses, or new paragraphs. A medieval manuscript commonly begins with the word incipit (Latin, ‘begins’), and ends with explicit (Latin, ‘ends’). Even if the work has its own title, incipit is still added to it to help to identify the text. Even in the most modest of codices, these technical marks have been emphasized; the same applies to red subheadings, chapter numbers, and at least one initial. All these marks together were called rubrics (Latin, rubrica; from ruber, ‘red’).
Decorations of the manuscript book are based on the shape of the letter; the latter, in its turn, is determined by the script. The Tartu collection includes almost all of the more common medieval scripts from the Carolingian minuscule (January, 12th (11th?) century), through the Gothic minuscule, Gothic italics, and the rotunda to the humanist italics and humanist minuscule (December, second half of the 15th century).
The calendar presents all the manuscripts from the collection. The reproductions aim at depicting the beauty and special characteristics of the manuscript book as richly as possible. On the reverse of each picture, the user will find a short commentary on the manuscript.

98 lehte. 204 × 127
Tartu käsikiri on oletatavasti üks taoline kommentaari kommentaar, 11. sajandi anonüümse kommentaari Glosulae anonüümne kommentaar Tractatus glosarum, millest praegu on teada veel vaid üks käsikiri (Vatikani raamatukogus).
Käsikirjas domineerib grammatiline arutlus ning pärgament on ära kasutatud viimse võimaluseni. Dekorat- sioon on väga napp: üks kahevärviline initsiaal (f. 1), rida väiksemaid siniseid initsiaale ning tavatindiga joonistatud, ent fantaasiarikkaid initsiaale koodeksi sees.
Reprodutseeritud: ülal initsiaal f. 41v; all vasakul f. 43v–44 üldvaade; all paremal värviline initsiaal f. 1 ning initsiaal f. 33v.
Mscr 13 Unknown author. Commentary on Priscian’s Latin grammar (Tractatus glosarum?).
12th (11th?) century, France, Carolingian minuscule.
98 leaves. 204 × 127
Institutiones grammaticae (“Grammatical Foundations”;
18 books) by the Roman grammarian Priscian from the 6th century is one of the most comprehensive descriptions of Latin grammar and usage, which has had a profound impact on linguistics and the philosophy of language since the Middle Ages. Despite its voluminousness, thorough commentaries were written on it throughout the Middle Ages (particularly in the so-called Scholastic period), and these commentaries, in their turn, were commented on.
For this reason, their relation to Priscian’s original text is not always clear. The Tartu manuscript is presumably one of such commentaries on a commentary: an anonymous commentary (Tractatus glosarum) on an anonymous 11th- century commentary (Glosulae). Of the former, only one more manuscript is currently known to be in existence (in the Vatican Library).
Grammatical discussion prevails in the manuscript, and the parchment has been made use of as completely as possible.
Decorations are very scanty: one two-coloured initial (f. 1) and, within the codex, a few smaller blue initials as well as a few ones drawn in common ink, but rich in fantasy.

Mscr 281 Kloostrikirjanduse kogumik.
13. sajandi 1. pool, Inglismaa, gooti minuskel. 157 lehte.
133 × 101
Üksnes 13. sajandist on regist- reeritud 127 käsikirja, millest kolmandik on Briti päritolu.
Koodeksis järgneb Innocentius III traktaadile terve rida lühemaid traktaate, jutlusi ja fragmente, mis käsitlevad pahede ja vooruste temaatikat, lõppedes fragmendiga Pseudo-Aristotelese teosest Secretum secretorum Johannes Hispalensise tõlkes (kommentaar vt Mai).
Tekstide temaatika ning erinevate käekirjade hulk (kokku 29) laseb oletada, et koodeks on järkjärgult kujunenud kloostris. Dekoratsiooni võib pidada tüüpiliseks: vahelduvad rohelise ja punase tindiga initsiaalid. Tekstis on peatükkide numbrid ja pealkirjad esile tõstetud punasega.
Reprodutseeritud: ülal p. 28–29 üldvaade; all vasakul detailid p. 28; all paremal lõik sisukorrast p. 52.
Mscr 281 Collection of monastic literature.
First half of the 13th century, England, Gothic minuscule. 157 leaves. 133 × 101
The collection begins with De contemptu mundi (“On the Contempt of the World”; 1195) by Pope Innocent III, written before he was elected pope and his name was still Lothario dei Segni. The work enjoyed extraordinary popularity throughout the Middle Ages, particularly in England. As many as 127 manuscripts have been registered as dating from the 13th century alone, and a third of these are of British origin. In the codex, the treatise by Innocent III is followed by a whole range of shorter treatises, sermons, and fragments, which deal with the subject of vices and virtues; the codex ends with a fragment from Pseudo-Aristotle’s work Secretum secretorum in Johannes Hispalensis’ translation (for a commentary, see May).
The themes of the texts as well as the number of different hands (altogether 29) suggest that the codex gradually took shape in a monastery. The decorations can be considered typical: initials in green ink alternate with those in red ink. Chapter numbers and headings have been emphasized with red in the text.

Mscr 287 Petrus Limoges’ist. Liber moralis de oculo.
14. sajandi 1. pool, Itaalia, rotunda. 94 lehte. 247 × 173 Koodeks sisaldab kaks teoloogilist traktaati – Vincen- tinuse De venatione divini amoris („Jumala armastuse jahtimisest”) ja Limoges’i Petruse Liber moralis de oculo („Moraaliraamat silmast”) – ning 1350. aastaks koostatud astroloogilisi tabeleid. Pariisis mitme valdkonnaga, sh teoloogia, meditsiini, astronoomia ja astroloogiaga tegelenud Limoges’i Petruse (u 1240-1306) moraaliallegoo- riline traktaat silmast ja nägemisest füüsilises ja allegoo- rilises perspektiivis oli kõrgkeskajal väga populaarne teos (valminud u 1285). On säilinud enam kui 220 ümberkir- jutust. Üks käsikiri leidub ka Tallinna Linnaarhiivis, mille tervikteksti koos eesti tõlke ja kommentaaridega on välja andnud Meelis Friedenthal oma väitekirjas Tallinna Lin- naarhiivi Tractatus moralis de oculo. Tartu, 2008 (Disserta- tiones theologiae universitatis Tartuensis, 13).
Vincentinus (Vincentius; Bartholomaeus Vincentinus e. Bartholomaeus de Bregantiis, Bartolomeo di Vicenza;
u 1200–1270) on jäänud kirikulukku väljapaistva dominikaani õpetlase ja kirikupoliitikuna, keda paavst Innocentius IV nimetas 1252. aastal kõige autoriteetsemaks teoloogiks oma kuurias. Sellest hoolimata on andmed tema elukäigust väga napid ning tema kirjalikust pärandist on säilinud üksnes jutlusi ja eelnimetatud teos De venatione divini amoris, mida võib käsitleda kui abivahendit jutlusta- mise juurde, sarnaselt Limoges’i Petruse traktaadiga.
Tartu koodeksit kaunistavad traktaatide miniatuurbor- düüridega alguslehed (f. 2, f. 49) ja kuus kaunist kulla ja värvidega teostatud piltinitsiaali, lisaks rohked kahe- värvilised initsiaalid arabeskide ja äärekaunistustega ning punased rubriigid.
Reprodutseeritud: üldvaade f. 63.
Mscr 287 Peter of Limoges. Liber moralis de oculo.
First half of the 14th century, Italy, rotunda. 94 leaves.
247 × 173
The codex includes two theological treatises – De venatione divini amoris (“On the Hunting for the Love of God”) by Vincentinus, and Liber moralis de oculo (“Moral Book on the Eye”) by Peter of Limoges – as well as some astrological tables for the year 1350. This moral-allegorical treatise on the eye and vision in the physical and allegorical perspective by Peter of Limoges (ca 1240−1306), who was active in Paris in several fields including theology, medicine, astronomy, and astrology, was very popular in the High Middle Ages (completed ca 1285). More than 220 transcripts have been preserved. One manuscript is in the Tallinn City Archives; its whole text with an Estonian translation and commentaries has been published by Meelis Friedenthal in his dissertation Tallinna Linnaarhiivi Tractatus moralis de oculo (“Tractatus moralis de oculo in the Tallinn City Archives”), Tartu, 2008 (Dissertationes theologiae universitatis Tartuensis, 13).
Vincentinus (Vincentius; Bartholomaeus Vincentinus or Bartholomaeus de Bregantiis, Bartolomeo di Vicenza; ca 1200–1270) has remained in church history as a prominent Dominican scholar and church politician, whom Pope Innocent IV called the most authoritative theologian in his Curia in 1252. Nevertheless, the information available about his life is very scanty, and of his written legacy, only some sermons and the above-mentioned work, De venatione divini amoris, have been preserved. The latter, like the treatise by Peter of Limoges, can be treated as an aid to preaching.
The initial leaves of the treatises in the Tartu codex are decorated by miniature borders (f. 2, f. 49). The codex also includes six beautiful pictorial initials made with gold and paints; numerous two-coloured initials with arabesques and borders; and red rubrics.
Reproduction – general view, f. 63.

Veel hiliskeskajani Aristotelesele omistatud teos Liber moralium sive secretum secretorum („Eetiliste arutluste raamat ehk saladuste saladus”) pärineb tegelikult anonüümselt araabia autorilt. Teos on vormilt nn vürsti- peegel, sisult käsitlus okultsest teadusest. Araabia keelest ladina keelde tõlgiti teos kaks korda: Johannes Hispalensis 12. sajandi 1. poolel ja Philippus Tripolist u 1243. Tartu käsikiri esindab viimast, täielikumat versiooni, millest on teada u 350 käsikirja.
Koodeks on dekoreeritud mitmes suuruses initsiaalidega:
f. 1 suur kolmevärviline initsiaal taimemotiiviga äärel;
tekstis läbivalt kolmes suuruses kolmevärvilised (kuldne – sinine – punane) initsiaalid ning väikesed punased ja sinised initsiaalid, lisaks punased rubriigid.

Mscr 285 Pseudo-Aristotle. Liber moralium sive secre- tum secretorum. 14th century, France, rotunda. 52 leaves.
180 × 114
Liber moralium sive secretum secretorum (“Book of Ethical Discussions, or the Secret of Secrets”), a work attributed to Aristotle until as late as the Late Middle Ages, actually originates from an anonymous Arabic author. It is a so- called advice-book for princes by form, and a treatment of occult science by content. The work was translated from Arabic into Latin twice: by Johannes Hispalensis in the first half of the 12th century, and by Philip of Tripoli about 1243. The Tartu manuscript represents the later, more complete version, of which about 350 manuscripts are known to exist. Exceptionally popular and influential in the Middle Ages, the book was doubtless better known than any of Aristotle’s own works.
The codex is decorated with initials of various sizes: f. 1 – a large three-coloured one with a plant motif in the margin;
throughout the text, three-coloured (golden, blue, and red) initials of three sizes, and small red and blue initials;
additionally, red rubrics.
Reproductions – top left: initials, f. 51; top right: initial on the first leaf, f. 1; bottom: general view, f. 42v–43.

Lisaks on tekstis punased rubriigid.
Reprodutseeritud: ülal f. 153 initsiaal arabeski ja äärekau- nistusega; all vasakul initsiaal arabeskiga f. 242v; paremal esilehe üldvaade f. 1.

A breviary is a collection of hourly prayers arranged according to the calendar of the church year (officium divinum, horae canonicae), which developed by the 11th century and was used at public hourly prayers resp. in churches and monasteries, as well as in private prayers.
The initials have been decorated throughout the manuscript, in some places even with an arabesque and border. The initials occur in four sizes: three of them are three-coloured (blue, red, and green), while the smallest ones are blue or red. Additionally, there are red rubrics in the text.

sajandil ligi 750-ni. Koodeks pärineb oletatavasti Marien- statti kloostrist (Rheinland-Pfalz). Reegel lähtub ordu vanimast kesksest põhiseaduslikust dokumendist Carta caritatis, ent on redigeeritud.

Mscr 283 Rule of the Cistercian order and monastery’s privileges. Ca1400, Germany, Gothic minuscule. 59 leaves. 152 × 115
The Cistercian order, founded in France in the late 11th century, spread all over Western Europe, with the number of monasteries amounting to nearly 750 in the 15th century.
The codex probably comes from the Marienstatt monastery in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. The rule is based on the order’s earliest central constitutional document, Carta caritatis, but it has been revised. Understandably, both the by-laws of the monastery and the general principles of the order have been presented.
The decorations of the official text are few: larger and smaller red initials, and red rubrics. The parts of the text to be emphasized as well as important numbers have been crossed out with red. The severity of the text is emphasized by the maintained lining.

Rahvaraamatuliku koodeksi dekoor on väga napp: vii- napuuväädiga initsiaal f. 1, üksikud värvilised initsiaalid ja punased rubriigid tekstis, alguslehel f. 1 puu motoga ALOPERA.

Mid-15th century, Italy, humanist italics. 77 leaves.
131 × 92
The moral philosophy of the Humanist period tried to combine very different fields, which is well illustrated by this collection. The codex begins with an apocryphal pseudo-correspondence between the philosopher Seneca and St. Paul. It is followed by Dialogus an seni ducere uxorem liceat (“Dialogue on whether an Old Man May Take a Wife”) by Poggio Bracciolini, and his letter to Cosimo de’ Medici, De agricultura (“On Cultivation”);
Enea Silvio Piccolomini’s letter to Procopius de Raben- steyn; Petrarch’s letter Ad Clementem papam (“To Pope Clement”); and three treatises on moral philosophy by Pseudo-Seneca.
The decorations of this codex, which resembles a popular book, are very few: an initial with a vine branch on f. 1;
a few coloured initials and red rubrics in the text; and on the first leaf on f. 1, a tree with the motto ALOPERA.
Reproductions – top left: f. 54; top right: two details from the first leaf, f. 1; bottom right: a detail from the last text leaf, f. 73v.

Mscr 286 Francesco Petrarca. De secreto conflictu curarum mearum. 15. sajandi keskpaik, Inglismaa, gooti kursiiv. 148 lehte. 211 × 141
Koodeks algab Francesco Petrarca (1304–1374) teosega De secreto conflictu curarum mearum („Minu salajastest siseheitlustest”), mida tuntakse ka pealkirjade all Secretum secretorum („Saladuste saladus”) või De contemptu mundi („Maailmapõlgusest”). See on pihtimuslikus vormis sissevaade iseenda ellu ja loomingusse. Arvukates ümber- kirjutustes ja rohketes trükiväljaannetes levinud teksti on võimalik lugeda ka eesti keeles (Ülar Ploomi tõlge 1995).
Petrarcale järgnevad kirikuisa Lactantiuse (3. sajandi 2.
pool) traktaadid De ira Dei („Jumala vihast”) ja De opificio Dei („Jumala tööst”) ning Johannes de Rupescissa traktaat alkeemilisest meditsiinist. Koodeksi algusesse köidetud kuus fooliot sisaldavad meditsiinilis-alkeemilisi retsepte (kirjutatud enne 1500. aastat) ja destillatsiooninõude jooniseid.
Koodeksi dekoor on pilkupüüdev: kolm taimemotiiviga äärekaunistust, mitmes suuruses kuldsed ning kahevärvi- lised (punane – sinine) initsiaalid, mõned luuderohuorna- mendiga.
Reprodutseeritud: f. 8.
Mscr 286 Petrarch. De secreto conflictu curarum mearum. Mid-15th century, England, Gothic italics. 148 leaves. 211 × 141
The codex begins with Petrarch’s (1304–1374) De secreto conflictu curarum mearum (“On My Secret Inner Struggles”), also known as Secretum secretorum (“The Secret of Secrets”), or De contemptu mundi (“On the Contempt of the World”). It is an insight into his own life and creation in the form of confessions. The text, distributed in numerous transcripts and many publications, is also available in Estonian, translated by Ülar Ploom in 1995.
Petrarch’s work is followed by treatises De ira Dei (“On the Anger of God”) and De opificio Dei (“On the Work of God”) by the Church Father Lactantius (second half of the 3rd century); and a treatise on alchemical medicine by Johannes de Rupescissa. The six folios bound at the beginning of the codex include medical-alchemical recipes (written before 1500) and drawings of distilling vessels.
The decorations of the codex are attractive: three borders with a plant motif, and golden and two-coloured (red and blue) initials of various sizes, some with ivy ornament.
Reproduction – f. 8.

Mscr 280 Pseudo-Dares Phrygius. Hystoria troiana.
Second half of the 15th century, Italy, humanist minuscule with Gothic elements. 63 leaves. 134 × 91 The fictitious chronicle of the Trojan War by Pseudo- Dares Phrygius, probably dating from the 4th century, was a successful popular book in the Middle Ages. At the same time, there were quite a lot of those who considered it a true historical chronicle, and that shaped the concept of the Trojan War from the 6th to the 15th and 16th centuries. The text was distributed in numerous transcripts, but researchers have nevertheless found just a dozen ones dating from the 15th century.
The Tartu codex is a popular book by form. There are many spelling mistakes, and the decorations are very few:
only the first leaf is decorated by a large blue initial with a red arabesque, and by a red rubric. In the text margins appear simple black initials, which may be unfinished.
Reproduction – f. 1.
Mscr 280 Pseudo-Dares Phrygius. Hystoria troiana.
15. sajandi 2. pool, Itaalia, humanistide minuskel gooti elementidega. 63 lehte. 134 × 91
Tekst levis arvukates ümberkirjutustes, siiski on 15. sajandist pärinevaid õnnestunud leida vaid tosinkond.
Tartu koodeks on vormilt rahvaraamat.

Kogumik algab Hieronymuse kirjaga Epistula ad Eustochium de castitate virginis („Kiri Eustochiumile neitsilikkuse hoidmisest”), sisaldab seejärel mõned Clairvaux’ Bernard’i kirjad ning Pseudo-Hieronymuse kolm traktaati.
Kuigi koodeksi dekoor on napp, piirdudes mõnede init- siaalide ja punaste rubriikidega, on esilehel f. 1 märki- misväärne tindiga joonistatud Hieronymuse portree koos lõviga, selle paremale äärele on suurtähtedega kombineeri- tud kirja algus Eustochiumile.

Mscr 284 Jerome/Pseudo-Jerome. Treatises; Bernard of Clairvaux. Letters. Second half of the 15th century, Italy, humanist minuscule. 158 leaves. 160 × 117
The Church Father St. Jerome (ca 347–419/420) as an extraordinary scholar was held in equally high esteem both in the Middle Ages and in the Humanist period. To gain authority, works were written under his name that did not originate with him. The collection begins with Jerome’s letter Epistula ad Eustochium de castitate virginis (“Letter to Eustochium on Keeping the Virginity”). It is followed by a few letters by Bernard of Clairvaux, and three treatises by Pseudo-Jerome.
Although the decorations of the codex are confined to just a few initials and red rubrics, the first leaf (f. 1) bears a considerable ink portrait of Jerome with a lion, with the beginning of the letter to Eustochium on the right in capital letters.
Reproductions – left: portrait of Jerome, f. 1; right: two details from the beginnings of letters by Bernard of Clairvaux, f. 35 and 34v.
