Dokumentationsbibliothek St. Moritz

In 1871 the third mountain guide association was founded in Switzerland in Pontresina, a few years later the colleagues in St. Moritz followed.

The creation of further smaller clubs took place. In 2003, the merger took place into a single association „Pontresina/St. Moritz”.

Initially, the Engadine mountain guides took their guests to the surrounding peaks in the local South Graubünden mountains. Numerous first ascents were the reward of hard work. After most of the high peaks had been climbed, these mountains were climbed over new and more difficult routes.

Many routes, even today still classic, bear the na- mes of famous Engadine mountain guides.

Individual mountain guides alo traveled abroad.

Christian Klucker, for example, was commissioned in 1901 to explore the mountains in British Colum- bia together with Edward Whymper (first ascent of the Matterhorn) in order to promote alpinism. Ad- ditional Engadine mountain guides followed, wor- king in Alaska with the exploration of glaciers, or in Canada with the avalanche protection of roads and railways.

The mountain guides in the Engadine were obliged to be available for rescue operations. Al- though a rescue with the helicopter can still be dangerous and difficult these days, it used to take several days and demanded the last forces of the rescuers in the early days.

The Swiss mountain rescuers were called to Ame- rica, where they had to do a sad and demanding job among other operations, after the crash of a commercial aircraft in the Grand Canyon.

The professional competence in the field of safety was appreciated in other areas as well. The Engadine mountains are regularly the setting for spectacular film productions. Among many others, sequences for two „007 James Bond“ films were shot in the Engadine mountains.

Today, new types of alpinism have been added.

Frozen waterfalls, smooth rock walls are climbed, steep flanks and gutters are traveled and walked with snow sports equipment.

The mountain guide has adapted himself to these trends so that he can accompany his guests even today to great experiences.
