THE CASE CONCEPT
The case concept is one of the most difficult things when we start learning German.
It simply means the function of the word in the sentence. The subject of the sentence is in nominative. The direct object is in accusative.
Der Mann kauft der Frau ein Auto.
The man buys the woman a car.
7
THE DECLINATION OF ADJECTIVES
German adjectives are only declined when they accompany a noun.
The information about the case has to be in the article or adjective. If it is in the article the adjective ends in -e or -en.
Der kleine Mann kauft der kleinen Frau ein kleines Auto.
The little man buys the little woman a little car.

THE PRESENT TENSE
In German only the simple present (no continuous present) is used to describe present and future actions.
In German, many verbs can be modified by adding a prefix. They are called separable verbs and inseparable verbs.
There are 3 different groups of irregular verbs. And they are only irregular in second and third person singular.
Auxiliary verbs are all irregular. Especially irregular is the verb "sein".
9
THE PAST TENSE HAS 2 TYPES
Unlike in English, in German there is no semantic difference between the simple past (Präteritum) and the present perfect (Perfekt).
The simple past (Präteritum) is characteristic of the written language and the present perfect (Perfekt) is characteristic of the spoken language.
Auxiliary verbs generally always use the simple past (Präteritum).
Präteritum
simple past
characteristic of the written language
(auxiliary verbs generally always use the simple past)
Perfekt
present perfect
characteristic of the spoken language
(except auxiliary verbs)
The Perfekt is built with the verb
haben or sein in simple present + participle of the verb.

THE FUTURE TENSE
The future is formed using the verb "werden" as an auxiliary verb although its conjugation varies with respect to its use as a verb with its own meaning.
The future is also used to express supposition, hope, intention and even imperation.
12
Future
verb werden in present + infinitive of the verb position 2 at the end
Subjekt werden + Infinitiv

wir werden fliegen
ihr werdet fliegen
sie, Sie werden fliegen

Imperation Du wirst jetzt lernen.
You will learn now. (You have to learn now.)
THE IMPERATIVE
The imperative is used to express an order and exists in German like in English, with its equivalent use in both languages.
The negation of the imperative can be done with the form "nicht" behind the verb, or behind the personal pronoun in the form of courtesy.
Trink nicht, bitte.
Please don´t drink.
Trinken Sie nicht, bitte.
Please don´t drink. (form of courtesy )
Or it can be done with the "kein" form, typically in front of a noun.
Trink kein Bier, bitte.
Please drink no beer.

Ich würde gern nach Deutschland fliegen. (wish) I would like to fly to Germany.
Könnten Sie bitte das Fenster öffnen? (request) Could you open the window, please?

15
THE PASSIVE VOICE
werden/sein + participle
Passive voice is used when the agent is irrelevant or unknown.
In German there are two types of passive voice.
In many cases sentences are constructed with the impersonal pronoun "man" as subject, the particle
"man" can be translated into English by "one" or "you" and the sentence is in active voice.
The passive voice can be used in different verb tenses.
Present tense Die Wäsche wird gewaschen.
The laundry is being washed.
Simple past Die Wäsche wurde gewaschen.
The laundry was being washed.
Present perfect Die Wäsche ist gewaschen worden.
The laundry has been being washed.
Future tense Die Wäsche wird gewaschen werden.
The laundry will be being washed.
Present with modal verbs Die Wäsche kann gewaschen werden.
The laundry can be being washed.
Present with modal verbs Die Wäsche konnte gewaschen werden.
The laundry could be being washed.
When using "Sie" (formal)
• in professional circumstances
• with strangers
• with neighbors
• with older people
When using "du" and "ihr" (informal)
• with friends and family The passive voice of process The passive voice of state Active voice with “man”
Die Wäsche wird gewaschen.
The laundry is being washed.
Die Wäsche ist gewaschen.
The laundry is washed.
Man wäscht die Wäsche.
You wash the laundry.
SEPARABLE VERBS
16
INSEPARABLE VERBS
In German many verbs can be supplemented with prefixes.
Verbs with the following prefixes are inseparable:
be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, miss-, ver-, zer-
verstehen - to understand entstehen - to arise erstehen - to acquire bestehen - to pass
ver-ent-er-be
(95% of inseparable verbs carry one of these 4 prefixes)
In the inseparable verbs, the syllable is accentuated after the prefix.
In German many verbs can be supplemented with prefixes.
Verbs with the following prefixes are separable:
ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, bei-, ein-, los-, mit-, nach-, her-, hin-, vor-, weg-, weiter-, zu-, zurück-
Ich komme um 8 zurück.
I come at 8 back.
In the present these prefixes appear separated from the verb and almost always at the end of the sentence.
Ich bin um 8 zurückgekommen.
I came back at 8:00.
In the participle ge is added between the prefix and the verb.
The syllable of the prefix is accentuated in the separable ones.
POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS
Possessive pronouns usually precede a noun with which they agree in gender, number and case (table of the cases).
Mein Name ist Ben.
My name is Ben.

PERSONAL PRONOUNS
The personal pronouns in German are, to whom it surprises, a little more complicated than in English. The form as always depends on the case, whether it is nominative, accusative or
dative.
Der Mann kauft der Frau ein Auto.
The man buys the woman a car.
Er kauft es ihr.
He buys it her.
SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
The subordinating conjunctions help to form the subordinate sentences. One of the most curious things about German is that in subordinate sentences the verb is placed in the
last position.
18
COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
Coordinating conjunctions do not change the position of the verb in the sentence.
Subordinating Conjunctions
weil because obwohl although
als/wenn when falls if
dass that damit so that
Main/subordinate phrase construction Ich lerne Deutsch, weil Deutsch schön ist.
I learn German, because German beautiful is.
main phrase - verb position 2 subordinate phrase - verb at the end
Coordinating Conjunctions
aber but sondern but
und and denn because
oder or bzw. respectively
Coordinating conjunctions do not change the position of the verb in the sentence.
Sie muss nicht essen, aber sie kann essen.
She must not eat, but she can eat.
The order of the elements in the sentence structure does not change.
GERN - LIEBER - AM LIEBSTEN
The adverb “gern” is widely used in German and although it does not have an equivalence in English it can be translated by "gladly".
19
COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES
In the German language adjectives can be compared. This comparison is required to compare things or to express different degrees of qualities.
gern - lieber - am liebsten
“gern” to indicate that you like to do something
“lieber” to indicate preference
“am liebsten” to indicate what you like the most
Ich esse gern Pizza. - I like to eat pizza.
Ich esse lieber Pasta. - I'd rather eat pasta.
Ich esse am liebsten Eis. - I like ice cream best.
Comparison of adjectives
schnell fast schneller am schnellsten
langsam slow langsamer am langsamsten

klein small kleiner am kleinsten
gut good besser am besten
schlecht bad schlechter am schlechtesten
billig cheap billiger am billigsten
teuer expensive teurer am teuersten
neu new neuer am neusten

Prepositions with dative Ich spreche mit dem Mann.
I talk with the man.
German English
ab from
aus from, out of
außer except for, besides
bei at, near
gegenüber opposite, across from
NOTA: La preposición gegenüberpuede ir antes o después de su objetomit with, by
nach after, to
seit since, for
von from, by
zu to, at
NOTE: The prepositions of the genitive statt(instead of), trotz(despite), während(during) and wegen (due to) are often used with the dative, especially in some regions. If you want to "mix" and not sound too
loaded, you can use them in the dative as well.
Prepositions with accusative Das Buch ist für den Mann.
The book is for the man.
German English
bis* until, to, by
durch through, by
entlang along
NOTE: The preposition entlang, unlike the others, usually goes after its object.
für for
gegen against, for
ohne without
um around, for, at (for time indication)
*NOTE: The preposition bisis technically an accusative preposition, but is almost always used with a second preposition (bis zu, bis auf, etc.) in a different case, or without an article (bisApril, bisMontag,
bisBerlin).
PREPOSITIONS WITH ACCUSATIVE + PREPOSITIONS WITH DATIVE
The complicated thing about German prepositions is not the meanings nor the number of prepositions. They are also available in English, Spanish, and many other languages.
What really costs is that "what goes after the prepositions" is modified by the prepositions in the case.
That means, some prepositions "rule" accusative, others dative, for that reason the noun that comes after the preposition appears in the case that determines the preposition.
